    We study a nonlinear problem which occurs in the theory of particulate formation in supersaturated chemical solutions. Mathematically, the problem involves the bifurcation of time-periodic solutions in an initial-boundary value problem involving a nonlinear integro-differential equation. The mechanism controlling the oscillatory states is revealed by combining the theory of characteristics for first order partial differential equations with the multi-time scale perturbation analysis of a certain third order system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations

    A transient ballistics and combustion model is derived to represent the closed vessel experiment that is widely used to characterize propellants. A computer program is developed to solve the time-dependent equations, and is applied to explain aspects of closed vessel behavior. In the case of nitramine propellants the cratering of the burning surface associated with combustion above break-point pressures augments the effective burning rate as deduced from the closed vessel experiment. Low pressure combustion is significantly affected by the ignition process and, in the case of nitramine propellants, by the developing and changing surface structure. Thus, burning rates deduced from the closed vessel experiment may or may not agree with those measured in the equilibrium strand burner. Series of T burner experiments are performed to compare the combustion instability characteristics of nitramine (HMX) containing propellants and ammonium perchlorate (AP)propellants. Although ash produced by more fuel rich propellants could have provided mechanical suppression, results from clean-burning propellants permit the conclusion that HMX reduces the acoustic driving

    A two-point boundary value problem in the interval [ε, ∞], ε > 0 is studied. The problem contains additional parameters α ≥ 0, β ≥ 0, 0 ≤ U 0; for α = 0 an explicit construction shows that no solution exists unless k > 1. A special method is used to show uniqueness. For ε ↓ 0, k ≥ 1, various results had previously been obtained by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Examples of these results are verified rigorously using the integral representation. For k < 1, the problem is shown not to be a layer-type problem, a fact previously demonstrated explicitly for k = 0. If k is an integer ≥ 0 the intuitive understanding of the problem is aided by regarding it as spherically symmetric in k + 1 dimensions.     The impact of an emotionally expressive writing intervention on eating pathology in female students

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Introduction: Previous research demonstrating emotional influences on eating and weight suggest that emotionally expressive writing may have a significant impact on reducing risk of eating pathology. This study examined the effects of writing about Intensely Positive Experiences on weight and disordered eating during a naturalistic stressor. Method: Seventy-one female students completed an expressive or a control writing task before a period of exams. Both groups were compared on BMI (kg/m2) and the Eating Disorder Examination – Questionnaire (EDE-Q) before the writing task and at 8-week follow-up. A number of secondary analyses were also examined (to identify potential mediators) including measures of attachment, social rank, self-criticism and self-reassurance, stress and mood. Results: There was a significant effect of intervention on changes in the subscales of the EDE-Q (p = .03). Specifically, expressive writers significantly reduced their dietary restraint while those in the control group did not. There was no significant effect of the intervention on changes in BMI or the other subscales of the EDE-Q (Eating, Weight and Shape Concern). There was also no effect of writing on any of the potential mediators in the secondary analyses. Discussion: Emotionally expressive writing may reduce the risk of dietary restraint in women but these findings should be accepted with caution. It is a simple and light touch intervention that has the potential to be widely applied. However, it remains for future research to replicate these results and to identify the mechanisms of action.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Star formation in Carina OB1: Observations of a giant molecular cloud associated with the eta Carinae Nebula

    A giant molecular cloud associated with the eta Carinae nebula was fully mapped in CO with the Columbia Millimeter-Wave Telescope at Cerro Tololo. The cloud comples has a mass of roughly 700,000 solar mass and extends about 140 pc along the Galactic plane, with the giant Carina HII region situated at one end of the complex. Clear evidence of interaction between the HII region and the molecular cloud is found in the relative motions of the ionized gas, the molecular gas, and the dust; simple energy and momentum considerations suggest that the HII region is responsible for the observed motion of a cloud fragment. The molecular cloud complex appears to be the parent material of the entire Car OB1 Association which, in addition to the young clusters in the Carine nebula, includes the generally older cluster NGC 3325, NGC 3293, and IC 2581. The overall star formation efficiency in the cloud complex is estimated to be approximately 0.02
