An explicit height bound for the classical modular polynomial
For a prime m, let Phi_m be the classical modular polynomial, and let
h(Phi_m) denote its logarithmic height. By specializing a theorem of Cohen, we
prove that h(Phi_m) <= 6 m log m + 16 m + 14 sqrt m log m. As a corollary, we
find that h(Phi_m) <= 6 m log m + 18 m also holds. A table of h(Phi_m) values

Singularities in ternary mixtures of k-core percolation
Heterogeneous k-core percolation is an extension of a percolation model which
has interesting applications to the resilience of networks under random damage.
In this model, the notion of node robustness is local, instead of global as in
uniform k-core percolation. One of the advantages of k-core percolation models
is the validity of an analytical mathematical framework for a large class of
network topologies. We study ternary mixtures of node types in random networks
and show the presence of a new type of critical phenomenon. This scenario may
have useful applications in the stability of large scale infrastructures and

Faking like a woman? Towards an interpretative theorization of sexual pleasure.
This article explores the possibility of developing a feminist approach to gendered and sexual embodiment which is rooted in the pragmatist/interactionist tradition derived from G.H. Mead, but which in turn develops this perspective by inflecting it through more recent feminist thinking. In so doing we seek to rebalance some of the rather abstract work on gender and embodiment by focusing on an instance of 'heterosexual' everyday/night life - the production of the female orgasm. Through engaging with feminist and interactionist work, we develop an approach to embodied sexual pleasure that emphasizes the sociality of sexual practices and of reflexive sexual selves. We argue that sexual practices and experiences must be understood in social context, taking account of the situatedness of sex as well as wider socio-cultural processes the production of sexual desire and sexual pleasure (or their non-production) always entails interpretive, interactional processes
Extensional rupture of model non-Newtonian fluid filaments
We present molecular dynamics computer simulations of filaments of model
non-Newtonian liquid stretched in a uniaxial deformation to the point of
breaking. The liquid consists of Lennard-Jones monomers bound into chains of
100 monomers by nonlinear springs, and several different constant velocity and
constant strain rate deformations are considered. Generally we observe
nonuniform extensions originating in an interplay between the stretching forces
and elastic and capillary restoring mechanisms, leading to highly uneven shapes
and alternating stretched and unstretched regions of liquid. Except at the
fastest pulling speeds, the filaments continue to thin indefinitely and break
only when depleted of molecules, rather than common viscoelastic rupture

O(4) texture with a cosmological constant
We investigate O(4) textures in a background with a positive cosmological
constant. We find static solutions which co-move with the expanding background.
There exists a solution in which the scalar field is regular at the horizon.
This solution has a noninteger winding number smaller than one. There also
exist solutions in which scalar-field derivatives are singular at the horizon.
Such solutions can complete one winding within the horizon. If the winding
number is larger than some critical value, static solutions including the

The E5 oncoprotein of BPV-4 does not interfere with the biosynthetic pathway of non-classical MHC class I
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I region in mammals contains both classical and non-classical MHC class I genes. Classical MHC class I molecules present antigenic peptides to cytotoxic T lymphocytes, whereas non-classical MHC class I molecules have a variety of functions. Both classical and non-classical MHC molecules interact with natural killer cell receptors and may under some circumstances prevent cell death by natural killer cytotoxicity. The E5 oncoprotein of BPV-4 down-regulates the expression of classical MHC class I on the cell surface and retains the complex in the Golgi apparatus. The inhibition of classical MHC class I to the cell surface results from both the impaired acidification of the Golgi, due to the interaction of E5 with subunit c of the H+ V-ATPase, and to the physical binding of E5 to the heavy chain of MHC class I. Despite the profound effect of E5 on classical MHC class I, E5 does not retain a non-classical MHC class I in the Golgi, does not inhibit its transport to the cell surface and does not bind its heavy chain. We conclude that, as is the case for HPV-16 E5, BPV-4 E5 does not down-regulate certain non-classical MHC class I, potentially providing a mechanism for the escape of the infected cell from attack by both cytotoxic T lymphocytes and NK cells
Cooperation and Self-Regulation in a Model of Agents Playing Different Games
A simple model for cooperation between "selfish" agents, which play an
extended version of the Prisoner's Dilemma(PD) game, in which they use
arbitrary payoffs, is presented and studied. A continuous variable,
representing the probability of cooperation, [0,1], is assigned to
each agent at time . At each time step a pair of agents, chosen at
random, interact by playing the game. The players update their using a
criteria based on the comparison of their utilities with the simplest estimate
for expected income. The agents have no memory and use strategies not based on
direct reciprocity nor 'tags'. Depending on the payoff matrix, the systems
self-organizes - after a transient - into stationary states characterized by
their average probability of cooperation and average equilibrium
per-capita-income . It turns out that the model
exhibit some results that contradict the intuition. In particular, some games
which - {\it a priory}- seems to favor defection most, may produce a relatively
high degree of cooperation. Conversely, other games, which one would bet that
lead to maximum cooperation, indeed are not the optimal for producing

Lyapunov exponents for products of complex Gaussian random matrices
The exact value of the Lyapunov exponents for the random matrix product with each , where
is a fixed positive definite matrix and a complex Gaussian matrix with entries standard complex normals, are
calculated. Also obtained is an exact expression for the sum of the Lyapunov
exponents in both the complex and real cases, and the Lyapunov exponents for
diffusing complex matrices.Comment: 15 page
Phenomenological glass model for vibratory granular compaction
A model for weakly excited granular media is derived by combining the free
volume argument of Nowak et al. [Phys. Rev. E 57, 1971 (1998)] and the
phenomenological model for supercooled liquids of Adam and Gibbs [J. Chem.
Phys. 43, 139 (1965)]. This is made possible by relating the granular
excitation parameter \Gamma, defined as the peak acceleration of the driving
pulse scaled by gravity, to a temperature-like parameter \eta(\Gamma). The
resulting master equation is formally identical to that of Bouchaud's trap
model for glasses [J. Phys. I 2, 1705 (1992)]. Analytic and simulation results
are shown to compare favourably with a range of known experimental behaviour.
This includes the logarithmic densification and power spectrum of fluctuations
under constant \eta, the annealing curve when \eta is varied cyclically in
time, and memory effects observed for a discontinuous shift in \eta. Finally,
we discuss the physical interpretation of the model parameters and suggest
