    Human-like robots as platforms for electroactive polymers (EAP)

    Human-like robots, which have been a science fiction for many years, are increasingly becoming an engineering reality thanks to many technology advances in recent years. Humans have always sought to imitate the human appearance, functions and intelligence and as the capability progresses they may become our household appliance or even companion. Biomimetic technologies are increasingly becoming common tools to support the development of such robots. As artificial muscles, electroactive polymers (EAP) are offering important actuation capability for making such machines lifelike. The current limitations of EAP are hampering the possibilities that can be adapted in such robots but progress is continually being made. As opposed to other human made machines and devices, this technology raises various questions and concerns that need to be addressed. These include the need to prevent accidents, deliberate harm, or their use in crimes. In this paper the state-of-the-art and the challenges will be reviewed

    The present invention provides a pump for inducing a displacement of a fluid from a first medium to a second medium, including a conduit coupled to the first and second media, a transducing material piston defining a pump chamber in the conduit and being transversely displaceable for increasing a volume of the chamber to extract the fluid from the first medium to the chamber and for decreasing the chamber volume to force the fluid from the chamber to the second medium, a first transducing material valve mounted in the conduit between the piston and the first medium and being transversely displaceable from a closed position to an open position to admit the fluid to the chamber, and control means for changing a first field applied to the piston to displace the piston for changing the chamber volume and for changing a second field applied to the first valve to change the position of the first valve

    Phenomenology of TeV-scale scalar Leptoquarks in the EFT

    We examine new aspects of leptoquark (LQ) phenomenology using effective field theory (EFT). We construct a complete set of leading effective operators involving SU(2) singlets scalar LQ and the SM fields up to dimension six. We show that, while the renormalizable LQ-lepton-quark interaction Lagrangian can address the persistent hints for physics beyond the Standard Model in the B-decays Bˉ→D(∗)τνˉ\bar B \to D^{(*)} \tau \bar\nu, Bˉ→Kˉℓ+ℓ−\bar B \to \bar K \ell^+ \ell^- and in the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the LQ higher dimensional effective operators may lead to new interesting effects associated with lepton number violation. These include the generation of one-loop sub-eV Majorana neutrino masses, mediation of neutrinoless double-β\beta decay and novel LQ collider signals. For the latter, we focus on 3rd generation LQ (ϕ3\phi_3) in a framework with an approximate Z3Z_3 generation symmetry, and show that one class of the dimension five LQ operators may give rise to a striking asymmetric same-charge ϕ3ϕ3\phi_3 \phi_3 pair-production signal, which leads to low background same-sign leptons signals at the LHC. For example, with Mϕ3∼1M_{\phi_3} \sim 1 TeV and a new physics scale of Λ∼5\Lambda \sim 5 TeV, we expect about 50005000 positively charged τ+τ+\tau^+ \tau^+ events via pp→ϕ3ϕ3→τ+τ++2⋅jbpp \to \phi_3 \phi_3 \to \tau^+ \tau^+ + 2 \cdot j_b (jbj_b=b-jet) at the 13 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1^{-1}. It is interesting to note that, in the LQ EFT framework, the expected same-sign lepton signals have a rate which is several times larger than the QCD LQ-mediated opposite-sign leptons signals, gg,qqˉ→ϕ3ϕ3∗→ℓ+ℓ−+Xgg,q \bar q \to \phi_3 \phi_3^* \to \ell^+ \ell^- +X. We also consider the same-sign charged lepton signals in the LQ EFT framework at higher energy hadron colliders such as a 27 TeV HE-LHC and a 100 TeV FCC-hh.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, final version as published in PR

    EquiX---A Search and Query Language for XML

    EquiX is a search language for XML that combines the power of querying with the simplicity of searching. Requirements for such languages are discussed and it is shown that EquiX meets the necessary criteria. Both a graphical abstract syntax and a formal concrete syntax are presented for EquiX queries. In addition, the semantics is defined and an evaluation algorithm is presented. The evaluation algorithm is polynomial under combined complexity. EquiX combines pattern matching, quantification and logical expressions to query both the data and meta-data of XML documents. The result of a query in EquiX is a set of XML documents.
