Pressure induced magnetic and magnetocaloric properties in NiCoMnSb Heusler alloy

The effect of pressure on the magnetic and the magnetocaloric properties around the martensitic transformation temperature in NiCoMnSb Heusler alloy has been studied. The martensitic transition temperature has significantly shifted to higher temperatures with pressure, whereas the trend is opposite with the application of applied magnetic field. The maximum magnetic entropy change around the martensitic transition temperature for Ni45Co5Mn38Sb12 is 41.4 J/kg K at the ambient pressure, whereas it is 33 J/kg K at 8.5 kbar. We find that by adjusting the Co concentration and applying suitable pressure, NiCoMnSb system can be tuned to achieve giant magnetocaloric effect spread over a large temperature span around the room temperature, thereby making it a potential magnetic refrigerant material for applications.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

Double Diffusion Encoding Prevents Degeneracy in Parameter Estimation of Biophysical Models in Diffusion MRI

Purpose: Biophysical tissue models are increasingly used in the interpretation of diffusion MRI (dMRI) data, with the potential to provide specific biomarkers of brain microstructural changes. However, the general Standard Model has recently shown that model parameter estimation from dMRI data is ill-posed unless very strong magnetic gradients are used. We analyse this issue for the Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging with Diffusivity Assessment (NODDIDA) model and demonstrate that its extension from Single Diffusion Encoding (SDE) to Double Diffusion Encoding (DDE) solves the ill-posedness and increases the accuracy of the parameter estimation. Methods: We analyse theoretically the cumulant expansion up to fourth order in b of SDE and DDE signals. Additionally, we perform in silico experiments to compare SDE and DDE capabilities under similar noise conditions. Results: We prove analytically that DDE provides invariant information non-accessible from SDE, which makes the NODDIDA parameter estimation injective. The in silico experiments show that DDE reduces the bias and mean square error of the estimation along the whole feasible region of 5D model parameter space. Conclusions: DDE adds additional information for estimating the model parameters, unexplored by SDE, which is enough to solve the degeneracy in the NODDIDA model parameter estimation.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure

Optimal Fuel Saving in 4D Waypoint Networks

The purpose of this work is to develop a trajectory optimization method that generates a fuel optimal trajectory from a predefined 4D waypoint networks, where the arrival time is specified for each waypoint in the network. A single source shortest path algorithm is presented to generate the optimal flight trajectory that minimizes fuel burn. Generating such trajectories enables the airlines to cope with increasing fuel costs and to reduce aviation induced climate change, as emission is directly related to the amount of fuel burn. Two case studies were considered and the simulation results showed that flying a fuel optimal trajectory based on the proposed algorithm leads to a reduction of average fuel consumption on international flights by 2-4% compared with the conventional trip fuel.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Nonlinear Time-varying Parameter Estimation from Noisy Measurements

    Get PDF
Online parameter estimation for time-varying systems is a fundamental part of adaptive control, real-time system monitoring and prediction. A well-known framework for dealing with such a task is the Kalman filtering. Meanwhile Kalman filtering may be cumbersome for some time-critical systems and inappropriate for systems whose stochastic characteristics are not Gaussian. To overcome these shortcomings, a parameter estimation algorithm devised from Sutton’s dynamic learning rate techniques and based on a learning window and forgetting factor criterion has been used. In doing so, the proposed algorithm avoids the need for heuristic choices of the initial conditions and noise covariance matrices required by the Kalman filtering. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated successfully on a lateral-directional flight dynamics parameter estimation process for an unmanned aerial vehicle through computational simulation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Spline parameterization based nonlinear trajectory optimization along 4D waypoints

    Get PDF
Flight trajectory optimization has become an important factor not only to reduce the operational costs (e.g.,, fuel and time related costs) of the airliners but also to reduce the environmental impact (e.g.,, emissions, contrails and noise etc.) caused by the airliners. So far, these factors have been dealt with in the context of 2D and 3D trajectory optimization, which are no longer efficient. Presently, the 4D trajectory optimization is required in order to cope with the current air traffic management (ATM). This study deals with a cubic spline approximation method for solving 4D trajectory optimization problem (TOP). The state vector, its time derivative and control vector are parameterized using cubic spline interpolation (CSI). Consequently, the objective function and constraints are expressed as functions of the value of state and control at the temporal nodes, this representation transforms the TOP into nonlinear programming problem (NLP). The proposed method is successfully applied to the generation of a minimum length optimal trajectories along 4D waypoints, where the method generated smooth 4D optimal trajectories with very accurate results.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Role of Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) in Two-pion Exchange Three-nucleon Potential

In this paper we have studied the two-pion exchange three-nucleon potential (2πE3NP)(2\pi E-3NP) using an approximate SU(2)×SU(2)SU(2) \times SU(2) chiral symmetry of the strong interaction. The off-shell pion-nucleon scattering amplitudes obtained from the Weinberg Lagangian are supplemented with contributions from the well-known σ\sigma-term and the Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) exchange. It is the role of the Δ\Delta-resonance in 2πE3NP2\pi E-3NP, which we have investigated in detail in the framework of the Lagrangian field theory. The Δ\Delta-contribution is quite appreciable and, more significantly, it is dependent on a parameter Z which is arbitrary but has the empirical bounds Z1/2|Z| \leq 1/2. We find that the Δ\Delta-contribution to the important parameters of the 2πE3NP2\pi E-3NP depends on the choice of a value for Z, although the correction to the binding energy of triton is not expected to be very sensitive to the variation of Z within its bounds.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe
