    A preliminary investigation of trunk and wrist kinematics when using drivers with different shaft properties

    It is unknown whether skilled golfers will modify their kinematics when using drivers of different shaft properties. This study aimed to firstly, determine if golf swing kinematics and swing parameters and related launch conditions differed when using modified drivers, then secondly, determine which kinematics were associated with clubhead speed. Twenty high level amateur male golfers (Mean ± SD: handicap = 1.9 ± 1.9 score) had their three-dimensional trunk and wrist kinematics collected for two driver trials. Swing parameters and related launch conditions were collected using a launch monitor. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant (p ≤ 0.003) between-driver differences; specifically, faster trunk axial rotation velocity and an early wrist release for the low kick point driver. Launch angle was shown to be 2° lower for the high kick point driver. Regression models for both drivers explained a significant amount of variance (60 – 67%) in clubhead speed. Wrist kinematics were most associated with clubhead speed, indicating the importance of the wrists in producing clubhead speed regardless of driver shaft properties

    Conditional two mode squeezed vacuum teleportation

    We show, by making conditional measurements on the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) squeezed vacuum, that one can improve the efficacy of teleportation for both the position difference, momentum sum and number difference, phase sum continuous variable teleportation protocols. We investigate the relative abilities of the standard and conditional EPR states, and show that by conditioning we can improve the fidelity of teleportation of coherent states from below to above the Fˉ=2/3\bar{F} = 2/3 boundary.Comment: 18 pages, RevTeX4, 10 figures postscrip

    The longevity and reversibility of quiescence in Schizosaccharomyces pombe are dependent upon the HIRA histone chaperone

    Quiescence (G0) is a reversible non-dividing state that facilitates cellular survival in adverse conditions. Here, we demonstrate that the HIRA histone chaperone complex is required for the reversibility and longevity of nitrogen starvation-induced quiescence in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The HIRA protein, Hip1 is not required for entry into G0 or the induction of autophagy. Although hip1Δ cells retain metabolic activity in G0, they rapidly lose the ability to resume proliferation. After a short period in G0 (1 day), hip1Δ mutants can resume cell growth in response to the restoration of a nitrogen source but do not efficiently reenter the vegetative cell cycle. This correlates with a failure to induce the expression of MBF transcription factor-dependent genes that are critical for S phase. In addition, hip1Δ G0 cells rapidly progress to a senescent state in which they can no longer re-initiate growth following nitrogen source restoration. Analysis of a conditional hip1 allele is consistent with these findings and indicates that HIRA is required for efficient exit from quiescence and prevents an irreversible cell cycle arrest

    Sequential methods for random-effects meta-analysis

    Although meta-analyses are typically viewed as retrospective activities, they are increasingly being applied prospectively to provide up-to-date evidence on specific research questions. When meta-analyses are updated account should be taken of the possibility of false-positive findings due to repeated significance tests. We discuss the use of sequential methods for meta-analyses that incorporate random effects to allow for heterogeneity across studies. We propose a method that uses an approximate semi-Bayes procedure to update evidence on the among-study variance, starting with an informative prior distribution that might be based on findings from previous meta-analyses. We compare our methods with other approaches, including the traditional method of cumulative meta-analysis, in a simulation study and observe that it has Type I and Type II error rates close to the nominal level. We illustrate the method using an example in the treatment of bleeding peptic ulcers. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
