    Spin-orbit coupling, minimal model and potential Cooper-pairing from repulsion in BiS2_2-superconductors

    We develop the realistic minimal electronic model for recently discovered BiS2_2 superconductors including the spin-orbit coupling based on a first-principles band structure calculations. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, characteristic for the Bi-based systems, the tight-binding low-energy model necessarily includes pxp_x, pyp_y, and pzp_z orbitals. We analyze a potential Cooper-pairing instability from purely repulsive interaction for the moderate electronic correlations using the so-called leading angular harmonics approximation (LAHA). For small and intermediate doping concentrations we find the dominant instabilities to be dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave, and s±s_{\pm}-wave symmetries, respectively. At the same time, in the absence of the sizable spin fluctuations the intra and interband Coulomb repulsion are of the same strength, which yields the strongly anisotropic behaviour of the superconducting gaps on the Fermi surface in agreement with recent ARPES findings. In addition, we find that the Fermi surface topology for BiS2_2 layered systems at large electron doping can resembles the doped iron-based pnictide superconductors with electron and hole Fermi surfaces with sufficient nesting between them. This could provide further boost to increase TcT_c in these systems.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Complex decision-making strategies in a stock market experiment explained as the combination of few simple strategies

    International audienceMany studies have shown that there are regularities in the way human beings make decisions. However, our ability to obtain models that capture such regularities and can accurately predict unobserved decisions is still limited. We tackle this problem in the context of individuals who are given information relative to the evolution of market prices and asked to guess the direction of the market. We use a networks inference approach with stochastic block models (SBM) to find the model and network representation that is most predictive of unobserved decisions. Our results suggest that users mostly use recent information (about the market and about their previous decisions) to guess. Furthermore, the analysis of SBM groups reveals a set of strategies used by players to process information and make decisions that is analogous to behaviors observed in other contexts. Our study provides and example on how to quantitatively explore human behavior strategies by representing decisions as networks and using rigorous inference and model-selection approaches

Para ello se utiliza Zentyal como sistema operativo base para disponer de los servicios de esta Infraestructura IT, se implementan bajo Zentyal servicios DHCP Server, DNS Server, Controlador de Dominio, Proxy no transparente, Cortafuegos, File Server y Print Server. Dicha implementación se lleva a cabo desde la consola de Zentyal con configuraciones previas como zona DMZ de acuerdo con la Red administrable para acceder desde el GNU/Linux al Zentyal Server, se evidencia control y encaminamiento de la red, lo que significa que con Zentyal se logra reducir y racionalizar las TIC, mejorar la seguridad y minimizar los tiempos de inactividad del sistema.In the present work it is intended to carry out the administration and control of a GNU/Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, but focused on the implementation of higher level IT infrastructure services for Intranet and Extranet in complex institutions. To do this, Zentyal is used as the base operating system to provide the services of this IT Infrastructure. DHCP Server, DNS Server, Domain Controller, Non-Transparent Proxy, Firewall, File Server and Print Server services are implemented under Zentyal. Said implementation is carried out from the Zentyal console with previous configurations such as a DMZ zone in accordance with the Manageable Network to access from GNU/Linux to the Zentyal Server, control and routing of the network is evident, which means that with Zentyal It manages to reduce and rationalize ICT, improve security and minimize system downtime

    Randomized Phase II Trial of Seribantumab in Combination with Erlotinib in Patients with EGFR Wild-Type Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

    Seribantumab (MM-121) is a fully human IgG2 monoclonal antibody that binds to human epidermal growth factor receptor 3 (HER3/ErbB3) to block heregulin (HRG/NRG)-mediated ErbB3 signaling and induce receptor downregulation. This open-label, randomized phase 1/2 study evaluated safety and efficacy of seribantumab plus erlotinib in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we report the activity of seribantumab plus erlotinib, versus erlotinib alone, in patients with EGFR wild-type tumors and describe the potential predictive power of HRG. Patients with EGFR wild-type NSCLC were assigned randomly to receive seribantumab + erlotinib or erlotinib alone. Patients underwent pretreatment core needle biopsy and archived tumor samples were collected to support prespecified biomarker analyses. One hundred twenty-nine patients received seribantumab + erlotinib (n = 85) or erlotinib alone (n = 44). Median estimated progression-free survival (PFS) in the unselected intent-to-treat (ITT) population was 8.1 and 7.7 weeks in the experimental and control arm, respectively (hazard ratio [HR], 0.822; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.37-1.828; p = 0.63), and median estimated overall survival was 27.3 and 40.3 weeks in the experimental and control arm, respectively (HR, 1.395; 95% CI, 0.846 to 2.301; p = .1898) In patients whose tumors had detectable HRG mRNA expression, treatment benefit was observed in the seribantumab + erlotinib combination (HR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.16-0.76; p = .008). In contrast, in patients whose tumors were HRG negative, the HR was 2.15 (95% CI, 0.97-4.76; p = .059, HRG-by-treatment interaction, p value = .0016). The addition of seribantumab to erlotinib did not result in improved PFS in unselected patients. However, predefined retrospective exploratory analyses suggest that detectable HRG mRNA levels identified patients who might benefit from seribantumab. An ongoing clinical trial of seribantumab, in combination with docetaxel, is underway in patients with advanced NSCLC and high HRG mRNA expression (NCT02387216). The poor prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) underscores the need for more effective treatment options, highlighting the unmet medical need in this patient population. The results of this study show that a novel biomarker, heregulin, may help to identify patients with advanced NSCLC who could benefit from treatment with seribantumab. On the basis of the observed safety profile and promising clinical efficacy, a prospective, randomized, open-label, international, multicenter phase II trial (SHERLOC, NCT02387216) is under way to investigate the efficacy and safety of seribantumab in combination with docetaxel in patients with heregulin-positive advanced adenocarcinoma

    The changing nature of work and skills in the digital age

    This report aims to shed light on some of the key drivers which are worth taking into account when assessing the effect of new technologies on the future of work and skills. It combines a synthesis of the most recent and robust scientific evidence available with original JRC research on issues which have been often overlooked by existing studies. In particular, the report provides new insights on the interplay between automation and work organisation, the extent and nature of platform work, and the patterns of occupational changes across EU regions. The first chapter discusses the impact of technology on employment. It overviews the most recent estimates on technology-induced job creation and destruction, and provides new insights on the role of workplace organisation in shaping the effect of new technologies on labour markets. The second chapter discusses how skills needs are shifting towards digital and non-cognitive skills, showing evidence of an increasing shortage of these skills in the EU, which education systems are not fully tackling yet. The third chapter reviews the opportunities and challenges related to the recent upwards trend in new forms of employment in the EU, focusing on the results of the second wave of the COLLEEM survey on platform work in the EU. The final chapter presents results from a new JRC-Eurofound study on the patterns of occupational change in EU regions in the last 15 years which shows that low-wage jobs have increasingly concentrated in peripheral regions while higher-wage jobs are becoming more and more concentrated in capital regions, leading to increasing territorial disparities, both across and within EU Member States.JRC.B.7-Knowledge for Finance, Innovation and Growt

    The Error of Estimated GFR in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

    Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents 30–50% of the cases of end stage renal disease worldwide. Thus, a correct evaluation of renal function in patients with diabetes is crucial to prevent or ameliorate diabetes-associated kidney disease. The reliability of formulas to estimate renal function is still unclear, in particular, those new equations based on cystatin-C or the combination of creatinine and cystatin-C. We aimed to assess the error of the available formulas to estimate glomerular filtration rate in diabetic patients. We evaluated the error of creatinine and/or cystatin-C based formulas in reflecting real renal function over a wide range of glomerular filtration rate (from advanced chronic kidney disease to hyperfiltration). The error of estimated glomerular filtration rate by any equation was common and wide averaging 30% of real renal function, and larger in patients with measured glomerular filtration rate below 60 mL/min. This led to chronic kidney disease stages misclassification in about 30% of the individuals and failed to detect 25% of the cases with hyperfiltration. Cystatin-C based formulas did not outperform creatinine based equations, and the reliability of more modern algorithms proved to be as poor as older equations. Formulas failed in reflecting renal function in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Caution is needed with the use of these formulas in patients with diabetes, a population at high risk for kidney disease. Whenever possible, the use of a gold standard method to measure renal function is recommended

    Artificial Intelligence at the JRC: 2nd workshop on Artificial Intelligence at the JRC, Ispra 5th July 2019

    This document presents the contributions discussed at the second institutional workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI), organized by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. This workshop was held on 05th July 2019 at the premises of the JRC in Ispra (Italy), with video-conference to all JRC's sites. The workshop aimed to gather JRC specialists on AI and Big Data and share their experience, identify opportunities for meeting EC demands on AI, and explore synergies among the different JRC's working groups on AI. In comparison with the first event, according to the JRC Director General Vladimír Šuchav, the activities and results presented in this second workshop demonstrated a significant development of AI research and applications by JRC in different policy areas. He suggested to think about replicating the event at the premises of diverse policy DGs in order to present and discuss the clear opportunities created by JRC activities. After the opening speech by the JRC Director General Vladimír Šuchav, the research and innovation presentation were anticipated by two presentations by Alessandro Annoni and Stefano Nativi. The first presentation dealt with the results of one year of AI@JRC and six months of fully operational AI&BD community of practice1. The second presentation reported the results of the AI competences survey at JRC. The research and innovation contributions consisted in flash presentations (5 minutes) covering a wide range of areas. This report is structured according to the diverse domain areas addressed by the presenters. While the first part of the workshop was mainly informative, in the second part we collectively discussed about how to move on and evolve the AI&BD community of practice.JRC.B.6-Digital Econom
