Low dose CT-based spatial analysis (CTSA) to measure implant migration after ceramic hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA): a phantom study
Implant migration is a predictor of arthroplasty survivorship. It is crucial to monitor the migration of novel hip prostheses within premarket clinical investigations. RSA is the gold standard method, but requires calibrated radiographs using specialised equipment. A commercial computed tomography micromotion analysis solution is a promising alternative but is not yet available for use with monobloc ceramic implants. This study aimed to develop and validate a CT-based spatial analysis (CTSA) method for use with ceramic implants. A phantom study was undertaken to assess accuracy and precision. A ceramic hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) and 20 tantalum beads were implanted into a synthetic hip model and mounted onto a 6-degree of freedom motion stage. The hip was repeatedly scanned with a low dose CT protocol, with imposed micromovements. Data were interrogated using a semiautomated technique. The effective radiation dose for each scan was estimated to be 0.25âmSv. For the head implant, precision ranged between 0.11 and 0.28âmm for translations and 0.34°-0.42° for rotations. For the cup implant, precision ranged between 0.08 and 0.11âmm and 0.19° and 0.42°. For the head, accuracy ranged between 0.04 and 0.18âmm for translations and 0.28°-0.46° for rotations. For the cup, accuracy ranged between 0.04 and 0.08âmm and 0.17° and 0.43°. This in vitro study demonstrates that low dose CTSA of a ceramic HRA is similar in accuracy to RSA. CT is ubiquitous, and this method may be an alternative to RSA to measure prosthesis migration
Direct photons measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC
Results from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC on direct photon production in
p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV are presented. In p+p
collisions, direct photon production at high p_T behaves as expected from
perturbative QCD calculations. The p+p measurement serves as a baseline for
direct photon production in Au+Au collisions. In d+Au collisions, no effects of
cold nuclear matter are found within the large uncertainty of the measurement.
In Au+Au collisions, the production of high p_T direct photons scales as
expected for particle production in hard scatterings. This supports jet
quenching models, which attribute the suppression of high p_T hadrons to the
energy loss of fast partons in the medium produced in the collision. Low p_T
direct photons, measured via e+e- pairs with small invariant mass, are possibly

Triangulating Abuse Liability Assessment for Flavoured Cigar Products Using Physiological, Behavioural Economic and Subjective Assessments: A Within-subjects Clinical Laboratory Protocol
Introduction In the USA, Food and Drug Administration regulations prohibit the sale of flavoured cigarettes, with menthol being the exception. However, the manufacture, advertisement and sale of flavoured cigar products are permitted. Such flavourings influence positive perceptions of tobacco products and are linked to increased use. Flavourings may mask the taste of tobacco and enhance smoke inhalation, influencing toxicant exposure and abuse liability among novice tobacco users. Using clinical laboratory methods, this study investigates how flavour availability affects measures of abuse liability in young adult cigarette smokers. The specific aims are to evaluate the effect of cigar flavours on nicotine exposure, and behavioural and subjective measures of abuse liability.
Methods and analyses Participants (projected n=25) are healthy smokers of five or more cigarettes per day over the past 3âmonths, 18â25 years old, naive to cigar use (lifetime use of 50 or fewer cigar products and no more than 10 cigars smoked in the past 30 days) and without a desire to quit cigarette smoking in the next 30 days. Participants complete five laboratory sessions in a Latin square design with either their own brand cigarette or a session-specific Black & Mild cigar differing in flavour (apple, cream, original and wine). Participants are single-blinded to cigar flavours. Each session consists of two 10-puff smoking bouts (30âs interpuff interval) separated by 1âhour. Primary outcomes include saliva nicotine concentration, behavioural economic task performance and response to various questionnaire items assessing subjective effects predictive of abuse liability. Differences in outcomes across own brand cigarette and flavoured cigar conditions will be tested using linear mixed models
GRB 050408: An Atypical Gamma-Ray Burst as a Probe of an Atypical Galactic Environment
The bright GRB 050408 was localized by HETE-II near local midnight, enabling
an impressive ground-based followup effort as well as space-based followup from
Swift. The Swift data from the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and our own optical
photometry and spectrum of the afterglow provide the cornerstone for our
analysis. Under the traditional assumption that the visible waveband was above
the peak synchrotron frequency and below the cooling frequency, the optical
photometry from 0.03 to 5.03 days show an afterglow decay corresponding to an
electron energy index of p_lc = 2.05 +/- 0.04, without a jet break as suggested
by others. A break is seen in the X-ray data at early times (at ~12600 sec
after the GRB). The spectral slope of the optical spectrum is consistent with
p_lc assuming a host-galaxy extinction of A_V = 1.18 mag. The optical-NIR
broadband spectrum is also consistent with p = 2.05, but prefers A_V = 0.57
mag. The X-ray afterglow shows a break at 1.26 x 10^4 sec, which may be the
result of a refreshed shock. This burst stands out in that the optical and
X-ray data suggest a large H I column density of N_HI ~ 10^22 cm^-2; it is very
likely a damped Lyman alpha system and so the faintness of the host galaxy (M_V
> -18 mag) is noteworthy. Moreover, we detect extraordinarily strong Ti II
absorption lines with a column density through the GRB host that exceeds the
largest values observed for the Milky Way by an order of magnitude.
Furthermore, the Ti II equivalent width is in the top 1% of Mg II
absorption-selected QSOs. This suggests that the large-scale environment of GRB
050408 has significantly lower Ti depletion than the Milky Way and a large
velocity width (delta v > 200 km/s).Comment: ApJ submitte
How to prioritize patients and redesign care to safely resume planned surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
AIMS: Restarting planned surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic is a clinical and societal priority, but it is unknown whether it can be done safely and include high-risk or complex cases. We developed a Surgical Prioritization and Allocation Guide (SPAG). Here, we validate its effectiveness and safety in COVID-free sites. METHODS: A multidisciplinary surgical prioritization committee developed the SPAG, incorporating procedural urgency, shared decision-making, patient safety, and biopsychosocial factors; and applied it to 1,142 adult patients awaiting orthopaedic surgery. Patients were stratified into four priority groups and underwent surgery at three COVID-free sites, including one with access to a high dependency unit (HDU) or intensive care unit (ICU) and specialist resources. Safety was assessed by the number of patients requiring inpatient postoperative HDU/ICU admission, contracting COVID-19 within 14 days postoperatively, and mortality within 30 days postoperatively. RESULTS: A total of 1,142 patients were included, 47 declined surgery, and 110 were deemed high-risk or requiring specialist resources. In the ten-week study period, 28 high-risk patients underwent surgery, during which 68% (13/19) of Priority 2 (P2, surgery within one month) patients underwent surgery, and 15% (3/20) of P3 ( three months) groups. Of the 1,032 low-risk patients, 322 patients underwent surgery. Overall, 21 P3 and P4 patients were expedited to 'Urgent' based on biopsychosocial factors identified by the SPAG. During the study period, 91% (19/21) of the Urgent group, 52% (49/95) of P2, 36% (70/196) of P3, and 26% (184/720) of P4 underwent surgery. No patients died or were admitted to HDU/ICU, or contracted COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Our widely generalizable model enabled the restart of planned surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic, without compromising patient safety or excluding high-risk or complex cases. Patients classified as Urgent or P2 were most likely to undergo surgery, including those deemed high-risk. This model, which includes assessment of biopsychosocial factors alongside disease severity, can assist in equitably prioritizing the substantial list of patients now awaiting planned orthopaedic surgery worldwide. Pamela: development of the RF system for a non-relativistic non-scaling FFAG
The PAMELA project(Particle Accelerator For MEdical
Applications) currently consists of the design of a particle
therapy facility. The project, which is in the design phase,
contains Non-Scaling FFAG, particle accelerator capable
of rapid beam acceleration, giving a pulse repetition rate of
1kHz, far beyond that of a conventional synchrotron. To
realise the repetition rate, a key component of the accelerator
is the rf accelerating system. The combination of a high
energy gain per turn and a high repetition rate is a significant
challenge. In this paper, options for the rf system of
the proton ring and the status of development are presented

Available Resources of the Fire Clay Coal in Part of the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field
Available resources for the Fire Clay coal were calculated for a 15-quadrangle area in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. Original coal resources were estimated to be 1.8 billion tons (BT). Coal mined or lost in mining was estimated at 449 million tons (MT), leaving 1.3 BT of remaining Fire Clay resources in the study area. Of the remaining resources, 400 MT is restricted from mining, primarily because the coal is less than 28 in. thick, normally considered too thin to mine underground using present technology. The total coal available for mining in the study area is 911 MT, or 52 percent of the original resource. Of the 911 MT, 14.9 percent is thicker than 42 in., and only 6.1 percent is accessible by surface-mining methods. The largest block of available coal is in the Leatherwood quadrangle, is less than 42 in. thick, and mostly occurs below drainage

Boolean delay equations on networks: An application to economic damage propagation
We introduce economic models based on Boolean Delay Equations: this formalism
makes easier to take into account the complexity of the interactions between
firms and is particularly appropriate for studying the propagation of an
initial damage due to a catastrophe. Here we concentrate on simple cases, which
allow to understand the effects of multiple concurrent production paths as well
as the presence of stochasticity in the path time lengths or in the network
structure.
In absence of flexibility, the shortening of production of a single firm in
an isolated network with multiple connections usually ends up by attaining a
finite fraction of the firms or the whole economy, whereas the interactions
with the outside allow a partial recovering of the activity, giving rise to
periodic solutions with waves of damage which propagate across the structure.
The damage propagation speed is strongly dependent upon the topology. The
existence of multiple concurrent production paths does not necessarily imply a
