The ASEAN Economic Community and the European experience
In November 2002, it was proposed at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Heads of Government meeting in Phnom Penh that the region should consider the possibility of creating an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2020. The name is evocative, for an Economic Community immediately brings to mind the European experience. In fact, when the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was re-inventing itself, it was proposed that the words behind the organization's acronym be replaced with Asia-Pacific Economic Community. This idea was rejected explicitly for fear that it would give the impression that APEC was intending to move in the direction of the EC model, which was thought to be too controversial. --
One Development Project, Two Economic Tales: The St. Louis Cardinals’ Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village
This article focuses primarily on the interrelated economic development project of the St. Louis Cardinals’ new Busch Stadium (2006) and Ballpark Village (2014). While the new Busch Stadium officially opened on April 10, 2006, and Ballpark Village officially opened on March 27, 2014, nearly eight years later, since the opening of Ballpark Village only included the completion of Phase 1, this interrelated development is actually ongoing and yet to reach fully planned and promised project completion. While originally proposed and envisioned as one simultaneous but layered project, the building and realization of the two entities eventually became two separate but interrelated projects, resulting in public financing of both. Through this evolution, the overall economic development project changed dramatically, including key actors, funding, design, and goals. This research examines both the individual and combined economic impact, both tangible and intangible, of the two entities, including in regard to sustainability
Elie Wiesel\u27s Unique Journey to Redemption
There is an important connection between ideology and rehabilitation after a traumatic experience that I aim to examine in my thesis. In particular, I wish to focus on the Holocaust. Looking at Elie Wiesel, I wish to examine the memoirs of this man and the life he lived after he was freed from the concentration camps. I aim to analyze his memoir and look at how he dealt with his experiences through his writing in contrast to other Holocaust survivors. With my thesis, I will examine the way this man coped with being a survivor of the Holocaust. My thesis will contain important research on why people reacted differently to being survivors of the Holocaust
A Comparative Exploration Into First Time in College Student Academic Performance in Face-to-Face Versus Remote Learning Environments
In spring 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced educational systems to transition into an emergency remote learning modality. This quantitative study compared retention and productive grade rates of two 16-week academic semesters and compared face-to-face (fall 2019) and remote (fall 2020) emergency remote instruction. The study sample was drawn from the core courses of History, English, and Speech at San Antonio College. Those courses were selected in part due to the high proportion of first time in college students who were considered a vulnerable population regarding performance and persistence. Additional variables (i.e., gender, veteran status, first-generation status, and socio-economic status) were examined to determine whether they were predictors of either productive grade rate or retention. The findings suggested no difference between productive grade rates but higher retention in the face-to-face semester. The findings also indicated that gender (female) was predictive in both modalities, but no other variables were. At a minimum, those results suggested the importance of local assessment of predictors of student success in general, and when making decisions related to remote learning in particular. Finally, results of this study suggested that despite concerns regarding the scholastic impact on students and faculty forced into emergency remote instruction, that did not adversely affect student outcomes

Memories of a redneck-hillbilly family.
Memories of a Redneck-Hillbilly Family' is a memoir, but it functions more like an autoethnography rather than a strict memoir. Jeannette Walls' memoir the Glass Castle reveals a few painful family truths as mine does; however, my tale is not as chronological in form. It is not a mere tale about me or my family, but it is about examining the blood roots from the hillbilly line that originates from Eastern Kentucky. J. D. Vance's book Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis would be closer to my story as he examined the hillbilly culture in his memoir. My thesis, though, stands a bit apart from other work of its nature. The goal of my thesis was to uncover why I am so different from my family. In this, I seek to understand how much of certain family traits are genetic. I examine the influence from the imprint of hillbilly isolation and living that created people that are family orientated but so set in their ways that even their language has changed little over the course of centuries. In fact, the hillbilly dialect stands virtually unchanged, and one of the only forms of dialect that mirrors Elizabethan language, its Anglo-Saxon roots obvious from the Scott-Irish history. However, I maintain the Rednecks are a separate group of white people living throughout America that have their own culture and values similar yet distinctly differ from their hillbilly cousins. I can see both influences in my immediate family. My work seeks to uncover why I do not follow the paths of my siblings or even many of my hillbilly cousins. Can understanding family members work to help a person understand who they are? Are some traditions or traits so much a part of us that no amount of education can eradicate them? If so, is that okay
The St. Louis Rams: The Greatest Public Financing Show on Earth
This case study research explores how and why the National Football League (NFL) Rams both arrived in St. Louis (in 1995) and departed St. Louis (in 2016). In order to address these questions, through archival and secondary data, the research examines the unique interrelated history of St. Louis and the NFL, including both economics and public financing. As a result, the research is presented in five sections: introduction, NFL economics, St. Louis and the NFL, St. Louis and no NFL, and final remarks. Note: to more fully understand this article, please first read “One Development Project, Two Economic Tales: The St. Louis Cardinals’ Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village” in the Missouri Policy Journal 2 (Fall/Winter)
D.R.I.V.E.N. School System: A Reformed Education Model
We believe there is a lack of an individualized and effective learning experience in the majority of education systems in the status quo. This leads to a disdain for everyday school life, indecisiveness in selecting a field of study post-high school, and the absence of passion for attaining knowledge that extends throughout a lifetime. After conducting research regarding alternative teaching methods and school structures through this joint project, we have developed D.R.I.V.E.N. School System. In 5th grade, we will test students for emerging qualities that indicate they will excel in a certain area. Their education in our schooling system will begin in 6th grade and will tailor to their individual needs not only as a student and future worker but also as a lifetime scholar. These students will likely excel in life as they will have a more in depth fundamental knowledge of their predisposed capabilities in addition to the tenacity that stems from a self-driven and in-depth education. By incorporating the use of Montessori teaching methods, adhering to a discipline specific curriculum, and grouping students by ability, we plan to eradicate the aforementioned problems from the education system. My part of the project will consist mainly of the logistics and practical side of this new education model. Specifically, I will be explaining how the school would functionally work in the real world. This will concern topics like testing and admissions along with the classroom and the overall school structure. By organizing the structure of a school and changing the way students interact with each other and their teachers I believe that we will see more positive effects in our education systems
