Gas core reactors for actinide transmutation and breeder applications
This work consists of design power plant studies for four types of reactor systems: uranium plasma core breeder, uranium plasma core actinide transmuter, UF6 breeder and UF6 actinide transmuter. The plasma core systems can be coupled to MHD generators to obtain high efficiency electrical power generation. A 1074 MWt UF6 breeder reactor was designed with a breeding ratio of 1.002 to guard against diversion of fuel. Using molten salt technology and a superheated steam cycle, an efficiency of 39.2% was obtained for the plant and the U233 inventory in the core and heat exchangers was limited to 105 Kg. It was found that the UF6 reactor can produce high fluxes (10 to the 14th power n/sq cm-sec) necessary for efficient burnup of actinide. However, the buildup of fissile isotopes posed severe heat transfer problems. Therefore, the flux in the actinide region must be decreased with time. Consequently, only beginning-of-life conditions were considered for the power plant design. A 577 MWt UF6 actinide transmutation reactor power plant was designed to operate with 39.3% efficiency and 102 Kg of U233 in the core and heat exchanger for beginning-of-life conditions
Analysis of the Gas Core Actinide Transmutation Reactor (GCATR)
Design power plant studies were carried out for two applications of the plasma core reactor: (1) As a breeder reactor, (2) As a reactor able to transmute actinides effectively. In addition to the above applications the reactor produced electrical power with a high efficiency. A reactor subsystem was designed for each of the two applications. For the breeder reactor, neutronics calculations were carried out for a U-233 plasma core with a molten salt breeding blanket. A reactor was designed with a low critical mass (less than a few hundred kilograms U-233) and a breeding ratio of 1.01. The plasma core actinide transmutation reactor was designed to transmute the nuclear waste from conventional LWR's. The spent fuel is reprocessed during which 100% of Np, Am, Cm, and higher actinides are separated from the other components. These actinides are then manufactured as oxides into zirconium clad fuel rods and charged as fuel assemblies in the reflector region of the plasma core actinide transmutation reactor. In the equilibrium cycle, about 7% of the actinides are directly fissioned away, while about 31% are removed by reprocessing
Novel Six-Quark Hidden-Color Dibaryon States in QCD
The recent observation of a hadronic resonance in the proton-neutron
system with isospin and spin-parity raises the possibility
of producing other novel six-quark dibaryon configurations allowed by QCD. A
dramatic example of an exotic six-quark color-singlet system is the charge
, isospin I=3, state which couples strongly to
+ The width and decay properties of such
six-quark resonances could be regarded as manifestations of "hidden-color"
six-quark configurations, a first-principle prediction of QCD -- SU(3)-color
gauge theory for the deuteron distribution amplitude. Other implications and
possible future experiments are discussed
Collision damping in the pi 3He -> d'N reaction near the threshold
We present a simple quantum mechanical model exploiting the optical potential
approach for the description of collision damping in the reaction pi 3He -> d'N
near the threshold, which recently has been measured at TRIUMF. The influence
of the open d'N -> NNN channel is taken into account. It leads to a suppression
factor of about ten in the d' survival probability. Applications of the method
to other reactions are outlined.Comment: RevTeX4, 14 pages, 3 Postscript figures, uses epsfig.sty, to appear

Force indeterminacy in the jammed state of hard disks
Granular packings of hard discs are investigated by means of contact dynamics
which is an appropriate technique to explore the allowed force-realizations in
the space of contact forces. Configurations are generated for given values of
the friction coefficient, and then an ensemble of equilibrium forces is found
for fixed contacts. We study the force fluctuations within this ensemble. In
the limit of zero friction the fluctuations vanish in accordance with the
isostaticity of the packing. The magnitude of the fluctuations has a
non-monotonous friction dependence. The increase for small friction can be
attributed to the opening of the angle of the Coulomb cone, while the decrease
as friction increases is due to the reduction of connectivity of the
contact-network, leading to local, independent clusters of indeterminacy. We
discuss the relevance of indeterminacy to packings of deformable particles and
to the mechanical response properties.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Minor changes, journal reference adde
Cluster, Classify, Regress: A General Method For Learning Discountinous Functions
This paper presents a method for solving the supervised learning problem in
which the output is highly nonlinear and discontinuous. It is proposed to solve
this problem in three stages: (i) cluster the pairs of input-output data
points, resulting in a label for each point; (ii) classify the data, where the
corresponding label is the output; and finally (iii) perform one separate
regression for each class, where the training data corresponds to the subset of
the original input-output pairs which have that label according to the
classifier. It has not yet been proposed to combine these 3 fundamental
building blocks of machine learning in this simple and powerful fashion. This
can be viewed as a form of deep learning, where any of the intermediate layers
can itself be deep. The utility and robustness of the methodology is
illustrated on some toy problems, including one example problem arising from
simulation of plasma fusion in a tokamak.Comment: 12 files,6 figure
An Exact Solution for Static Scalar Fields Coupled to Gravity in -Dimensions
We obtain an exact solution for the Einstein's equations with cosmological
constant coupled to a scalar, static particle in static, "spherically"
symmetric background in 2+1 dimensions.Comment: 9 pages. Replaced by a revised versio
Elastic scattering of low energy pions by nuclei and the in-medium isovector pi N amplitude
Measurements of elastic scattering of 21.5 MeV pi+ and pi- by Si, Ca, Ni and
Zr were made using a single arm magnetic spectrometer. Absolute calibration was
made by parallel measurements of Coulomb scattering of muons. Parameters of a
pion-nucleus optical potential were obtained from fits to all eight angular
distributions put together. The `anomalous' s-wave repulsion known from pionic
atoms is clearly observed and could be removed by introducing a
chiral-motivated density dependence of the isovector scattering amplitude,
which also greatly improved the fits to the data. The empirical energy
dependence of the isoscalar amplitude also improves the fits to the data but,
contrary to what is found with pionic atoms, on its own is incapable of
removing the anomaly.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. V2 added details on
