    Socioeconomic and production system characteristics of a sample of Oklahoma sheep producers were employed to examine the decision to use or not use an electronic market for slaughter lambs. Producer attributes that influence electronic market use were identified with qualitative choice models. The results help identify characteristics of electronic markets which influence their success.     Increased use of noncash-price procurement methods has concerned cattlemen for the past several years. This research estimated impacts of captive supplies on transaction prices for fed cattle. Negative relationships were found between transaction prices and percentage deliveries from the inventory of forward contracted and marketing agreement cattle. However, impacts from the absolute size of the total captive supply inventory were not significant. Price differences were found among procurement methods with forward contract prices being much lower. The first relation involves the total mass, the angular momenta, the distances and the forces between the black holes.     Soft singularity and the fundamental length

    It is shown that some regular solutions in 5D Kaluza-Klein gravity may have interesting properties if one from the parameters is in the Planck region. In this case the Kretschman metric invariant runs up to a maximal reachable value in nature, i.e. practically the metric becomes singular. This observation allows us to suppose that in this situation the problems with such soft singularity will be much easier resolved in the future quantum gravity then by the situation with the ordinary hard singularity (Reissner-Nordstr\"om singularity, for example). It is supposed that the analogous consideration can be applied for the avoiding the hard singularities connected with the gauge charges.Comment: 5 page

    Cluster, Classify, Regress: A General Method For Learning Discountinous Functions

    This paper presents a method for solving the supervised learning problem in which the output is highly nonlinear and discontinuous. It is proposed to solve this problem in three stages: (i) cluster the pairs of input-output data points, resulting in a label for each point; (ii) classify the data, where the corresponding label is the output; and finally (iii) perform one separate regression for each class, where the training data corresponds to the subset of the original input-output pairs which have that label according to the classifier. It has not yet been proposed to combine these 3 fundamental building blocks of machine learning in this simple and powerful fashion. This can be viewed as a form of deep learning, where any of the intermediate layers can itself be deep. The utility and robustness of the methodology is illustrated on some toy problems, including one example problem arising from simulation of plasma fusion in a tokamak.Comment: 12 files,6 figure

    Green's Function Measurements of Force Transmission in 2D Granular Materials

    We describe experiments that probe the response to a point force of 2D granular systems under a variety of conditions. Using photoelastic particles to determine forces at the grain scale, we experimentally show that disorder, packing structure, friction and texture significantly affect the average force response in granular systems. For packings with weak disorder, the mean forces propagate primarily along lattice directions. The width of the response along these preferred directions grows with depth, increasingly so as the disorder of the system grows. Also, as the disorder increases, the two propagation directions of the mean force merge into a single direction. The response function for the mean force in the most strongly disordered system is quantitatively consistent with an elastic description for forces applied nearly normally to a surface. These observations are consistent with recent predictions of Bouchaud et al. and with the anisotropic elasticity models of Goldenberg and Goldhirsch. At this time, it is not possible to distinguish between these two models. The data do not support a diffusive picture, as in the q-model. This system with shear deformation is characterized by stress chains that are strongly oriented along an angle of 45 degrees, corresponding to the compressive direction of the shear deformation. In this case, the spatial correlation function for force has a range of only one particle size in the direction transverse to the chains, and varies as a power law in the direction of the chains, with an exponent of -0.81. The response to forces is strongest along the direction of the force chains, as expected.
