A Quantitative Non-radial Oscillation Model for the Subpulses in PSR B0943+10
In this paper, we analyze time series measurements of PSR B0943+10 and fit
them with a non-radial oscillation model. The model we apply was first
developed for total intensity measurements in an earlier paper, and expanded to
encompass linear polarization in a companion paper to this one. We use PSR
B0943+10 for the initial tests of our model because it has a simple geometry,
it has been exhaustively studied in the literature, and its behavior is
well-documented. As prelude to quantitative fitting, we have reanalyzed
previously published archival data of PSR B0943+10 and uncovered subtle but
significant behavior that is difficult to explain in the framework of the
drifting spark model. Our fits of a non-radial oscillation model are able to
successfully reproduce the observed behavior in this pulsar.Comment: 45 pages, 16 figures, accepted Ap
Molecular Feshbach dissociation as a source for motionally entangled atoms
We describe the dissociation of a diatomic Feshbach molecule due to a
time-varying external magnetic field in a realistic trap and guide setting. An
analytic expression for the asymptotic state of the two ultracold atoms is
derived, which can serve as a basis for the analysis of dissociation protocols
to generate motionally entangled states. For instance, the gradual dissociation
by sequences of magnetic field pulses may delocalize the atoms into
macroscopically distinct wave packets, whose motional entanglement can be
addressed interferometrically. The established relation between the applied
magnetic field pulse and the generated dissociation state reveals that
square-shaped magnetic field pulses minimize the momentum spread of the atoms.
This is required to control the detrimental influence of dispersion in a
recently proposed experiment to perform a Bell test in the motion of the two
atoms [C. Gneiting and K. Hornberger, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 260503 (2008)].Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures; corresponds to published versio
Out-of-plane focusing grating couplers for silicon photonics integration with optical MRAM technology
We present the design methodology and experimental characterization of compact out-of-plane focusing grating couplers for integration with magnetoresistive random access memory technology. Focusing grating couplers have recently found attention as layer-couplers for photonic-electronic integration. The components we demonstrate are designed for a wavelength of 1550 nm, fabricated in a standard 220 nm SOI photonic platform and optimized given the fabrication restrictions for standard 193-nm UV lithography. For the first time, we extend the design based on the phase matching condition to a two-dimensional (2-D) grating design with two optical input ports. We further present the experimental characterization of the focusing behaviour by spatially probing the emitted beam with a tapered-and-lensed fiber and demonstrate the polarization controlling capabilities of the 2-D FGCs
Where do "red and dead" early-type void galaxies come from?
Void regions of the Universe offer a special environment for studying
cosmology and galaxy formation, which may expose weaknesses in our
understanding of these phenomena. Although galaxies in voids are observed to be
predominately gas rich, star forming and blue, a sub-population of bright red
void galaxies can also be found, whose star formation was shut down long ago.
Are the same processes that quench star formation in denser regions of the
Universe also at work in voids?
We compare the luminosity function of void galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy
Redshift Survey, to those from a galaxy formation model built on the Millennium
Simulation. We show that a global star formation suppression mechanism in the
form of low luminosity "radio mode" AGN heating is sufficient to reproduce the
observed population of void early-types. Radio mode heating is environment
independent other than its dependence on dark matter halo mass, where, above a
critical mass threshold of approximately M_vir~10^12.5 M_sun, gas cooling onto
the galaxy is suppressed and star formation subsequently fades. In the
Millennium Simulation, the void halo mass function is shifted with respect to
denser environments, but still maintains a high mass tail above this critical
threshold. In such void halos, radio mode heating remains efficient and red
galaxies are found; collectively these galaxies match the observed space
density without any modification to the model. Consequently, galaxies living in
vastly different large-scale environments but hosted by halos of similar mass
are predicted to have similar properties, consistent with observations.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted MNRA
Structural and Electronic Properties of the Interface between the High-k oxide LaAlO3 and Si(001)
The structural and electronic properties of the LaAlO3/Si(001) interface are
determined using state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. The atomic
structure differs from previous proposals, but is reminiscent of La adsorption
structures on silicon. A phase diagram of the interface stability is calculated
as a function of oxygen and Al chemical potentials. We find that an
electronically saturated interface is obtained only if dopant atoms segregate
to the interface. These findings raise serious doubts whether LaAlO3 can be
used as an epitaxial gate dielectric.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Enhanced Spontaneous Emission Into The Mode Of A Cavity QED System
We study the light generated by spontaneous emission into a mode of a cavity
QED system under weak excitation of the orthogonally polarized mode. Operating
in the intermediate regime of cavity QED with comparable coherent and
decoherent coupling constants, we find an enhancement of the emission into the
undriven cavity mode by more than a factor of 18.5 over that expected by the
solid angle subtended by the mode. A model that incorporates three atomic
levels and two polarization modes quantitatively explains the observations.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, to appear in May 2007 Optics Letter
On the completeness of impulsive gravitational wave space-times
We consider a class of impulsive gravitational wave space-times, which
generalize impulsive pp-waves. They are of the form ,
where is a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension and carries
the line element with the line
element of and the Dirac measure. We prove a completeness result
for such space-times with complete Riemannian part .Comment: 13 pages, minor changes suggested by the referee
Early Type Galaxies in the Mid Infrared: a new flavor to their stellar populations
The mid infrared emission of early type galaxies traces the presence of
intermediate age stellar populations as well as even tiny amounts of ongoing
star formation. Here we discuss high S/N Spitzer IRS spectra of a sample of
Virgo early type galaxies, with particular reference to NGC 4435. We show that,
by combining mid infrared spectroscopic observations with existing broad band
fluxes, it is possible to obtain a very clean picture of the nuclear activity
in this galaxy.Comment: 4 pages; proceedings of IAU Symposium No. 241, "Stellar Populations

Point defect concentrations in metastable Fe-C alloys
Point defect species and concentrations in metastable Fe-C alloys are
determined using density functional theory and a constrained free-energy
functional. Carbon interstitials dominate unless iron vacancies are in
significant excess, whereas excess carbon causes greatly enhances vacancy
concentration. Our predictions are amenable to experimental verification; they
provide a baseline for rationalizing complex microstructures known in hardened
and tempered steels, and by extension other technological materials created by
or subjected to extreme environments
