Decomposition of Optical Flow on the Sphere
We propose a number of variational regularisation methods for the estimation
and decomposition of motion fields on the -sphere. While motion estimation
is based on the optical flow equation, the presented decomposition models are
motivated by recent trends in image analysis. In particular we treat
decomposition as well as hierarchical decomposition. Helmholtz decomposition of
motion fields is obtained as a natural by-product of the chosen numerical
method based on vector spherical harmonics. All models are tested on time-lapse
microscopy data depicting fluorescently labelled endodermal cells of a

Estimating the uncertainty of areal precipitation using data assimilation
We present a method to estimate spatially and temporally variable uncertainty of areal precipitation data. The aim of the method is to merge measurements from different sources, remote sensing and in situ, into a combined precipitation product and to provide an associated dynamic uncertainty estimate. This estimate should provide an accurate representation of uncertainty both in time and space, an adjustment to additional observations merged into the product through data assimilation, and flow dependency. Such a detailed uncertainty description is important for example to generate precipitation ensembles for probabilistic hydrological modelling or to specify accurate error covariances when using precipitation observations for data assimilation into numerical weather prediction models. The presented method uses the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter and an ensemble nowcasting model. The model provides information about the precipitation displacement over time and is continuously updated by assimilation of observations. In this way, the precipitation product and its uncertainty estimate provided by the nowcasting ensemble evolve consistently in time and become flow-dependent. The method is evaluated in a proof of concept study focusing on weather radar data of four precipitation events. The study demonstrates that the dynamic areal uncertainty estimate outperforms a constant benchmark uncertainty value in all cases for one of the evaluated scores, and in half the number of cases for the other score. Thus, the flow dependency introduced by the coupling of data assimilation and nowcasting enables a more accurate spatial and temporal distribution of uncertainty. The mixed results achieved in the second score point out the importance of a good probabilistic nowcasting scheme for the performance of the method
The Magnetic Field of L1544: I. Near-Infrared Polarimetry and the Non-Uniform Envelope
The magnetic field (B-field) of the starless dark cloud L1544 has been
studied using near-infrared (NIR) background starlight polarimetry (BSP) and
archival data in order to characterize the properties of the plane-of-sky
B-field. NIR linear polarization measurements of over 1,700 stars were obtained
in the H-band and 201 of these were also measured in the K-band. The NIR BSP
properties are correlated with reddening, as traced using the RJCE (H-M)
method, and with thermal dust emission from the L1544 cloud and envelope seen
in Herschel maps. The NIR polarization position angles change at the location
of the cloud and exhibit their lowest dispersion of position angles there,
offering strong evidence that NIR polarization traces the plane-of-sky B-field
of L1544. In this paper, the uniformity of the plane-of-sky B-field in the
envelope region of L1544 is quantitatively assessed. This allowed evaluating
the approach of assuming uniform field geometry when measuring relative
mass-to-flux ratios in the cloud envelope and core based on averaging of the
envelope radio Zeeman observations, as in Crutcher et al. (2009). In L1544, the
NIR BSP shows the envelope B-field to be significantly non-uniform and likely
not suitable for averaging Zeeman properties without treating intrinsic
variations. Deeper analyses of the NIR BSP and related data sets, including
estimates of the B-field strength and testing how it varies with position and

Transitioning from High School to College: Examining the Sources and Influences of Social Capital for a First-Generation Latina Student
This paper uses the life history method to narrate the experiences of Camilla, a 19-year-old, first-year student at a four-year university. Camilla emigrated with her mother from El Salvador to the United States during her freshman year of high school. Based on two years of data collection, the author presents Camilla’s experiences at different stages, including her childhood in El Salvador, first and last year in high school, and her first year in college. The paper explores the sources and influences of social capital for a low-income, first-generation student and highlights its dynamic and contextual nature. The author argues that the findings have direct implications for the development of college access and readiness policies
External control strategies for self-propelled particles: optimizing navigational efficiency in the presence of limited resources
We experimentally and numerically study the dependence of different
navigation strategies regarding the effectivity of an active particle to reach
a predefined target area. As the only control parameter, we vary the particle's
propulsion velocity depending on its position and orientation relative to the
target site. By introducing different figures of merit, e.g. the time to target
or the total consumed propulsion energy, we are able to quantify and compare
the efficiency of different strategies. Our results suggest, that each strategy
to navigate towards a target, has its strengths and weaknesses and none of them
outperforms the other in all regards. Accordingly, the choice of an ideal
navigation strategy will strongly depend on the specific conditions and the
figure of merit which should be optimized
