    Protean Free Will

    Get PDF
This paper argues that free will is a purely theological issue, and offers an error theory for the free will debates in analytic philosophy in terms of evolutionary naturalism. I introduce 'protean free will' (PFW) as the ability to play mixed strategies effectively in noncooperative interactions. Thence, I argue that traditional worries about divine foreknowledge, Frankfurt controllers, moral responsibility, and determinism are side effects of selective pressures for unpredictability in our evolutionary past. Finally, I interpret the Libet experiments as showing an adaptive response to such pressures. I conclude that PFW does most things most philosophers want free will to do, conditional on the nonexistence of God

Neutron Scattering and magnetization studies of Ba2_2Cu2.95_{2.95}Co0.05_{0.05}O4_4Cl2_2: A decorated two-dimensional antiferromagnet

Ba2_2Cu3_3O4_4Cl2_2 has two inter-penetrating square Cu sublattices, one with square root 2 times the in-plane spacing of the other. Isotropic magnetic interactions between the two sublattices are completely frustrated. Quantum fluctuations resolve the intrinsic degeneracy in the ordering direction of the more weakly coupled sublattice in favor of collinear ordering. We present neutron scattering and magnetization studies of the magnetic structure when the Cu ions are substituted with Co. The Co spins create new magnetic interactions between the two sublattices. The ordering behavior of both Cu sublattices is retained largely unmodified. Between the phase transitions of the two sublattices spin-glass behavior is observed. Magnetization results show a strong enhancement to the ferromagnetic aspect of the magnetic structure. The combination of glassy behavior and large moments strongly suggest that the Co moments induce the formation of local canted states.Comment: 4 figure

The use of genetic algorithms to maximize the performance of a partially lined screened room

This paper shows that it is possible to use genetic algorithms to optimize the layout of ferrite tile absorber in a partially lined screened enclosure to produce a "best" performance. The enclosure and absorber are modeled using TLM modeling techniques and the performance is determined by comparison with theoretical normalized site attenuation of free space. The results show that it is possible to cover just 80% of the surface of the enclosure with ferrite absorber and obtain a response which is within +/-4 dB of the free space response between 40 and 200 MHz

Accounting for the formation of scientific fields in organization studies

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd There are few qualitative organizational accounts that explore the constitution of scientific fields in management. We developed a methodology for understanding the academic modes of scientific knowledge production in management research from the perspective of the sociology of scientific knowledge (SSK) and actor-network theory (ANT). SSK and ANT offer a way to account for how scientific fields in organization studies are enacted. Key to this process are splitting and inversion of statements; credibility and network formation; and the concepts of credit, trajectory, and position. Specific statements making key knowledge claims (e.g., handbooks, special editions) are situated in academic practices that obscure those rhetorical strategies that enable the production of a network of knowledge that can act, organizationally, as a more or less unified sub-field. We take as a starting point a collection of texts, dated 2011, which sought to systematize the main currents of a disciplinary sub-field during the last decade, focusing on how statements are transformed into scientific certainty and how the question of credibility is established. The sub-field is that of organizational learning (OL). The particular language of OL relies on approaches that make its epistemic assumptions intelligible within a network. It is a language that tends to reify and naturalize specific practices that become accredited as organization learning. The material/textual artifacts that sustain these practices, instead of being reified, can be reframed as enacting a scientific field whose resignification acts upon the network that enabled its existence

    Accounting as practice

In this paper we seek to debate some of the problems affecting positivist accounting research, and how the adoption of organizational theory grounded on qualitative methods can fruitfully contribute to advance research in the area. To this end we draw on research we have previously conducted in Portuguese public hospitals to discuss how the incorporation of power issues, institutional entrepreneurship, hybridization, institutional logics and institutional work in accounting studies fosters in-depth explanations of accounting practice.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The 1997 event in the Crab pulsar revisited

A complex event observed in the radio pulses from the Crab pulsar in 1997 included echoes, a dispersive delay, and large changes in intensity. It is shown that these phenomena were due to refraction at the edge of a plasma cloud in the outer region of the Crab Nebula. Several similar events have been observed, although in less detail. It is suggested that the plasma cloud is in the form of filaments with diameter around 3 x 10^11m and electron density of order 10^4 cm-3Comment: 5 pages 4 figs Accepted by MNRA
