Initial Systematic Investigations of the Landscape of Low Layer NAHE Extensions
The discovery that the number of physically consistent string vacua is on the
order of 10^500 has prompted several statistical studies of string
phenomenology. Contained here is one such study that focuses on the Weakly
Coupled Free Fermionic Heterotic String (WCFFHS) formalism. Presented are
systematic extensions of the well-known NAHE (Nanopoulos, Antoniadis, Hagelin,
Ellis) set of basis vectors, which have been shown to produce
phenomenologically realistic models. Statistics related to the number of
U(1)'s, gauge group factors, non-Abelian singlets, ST SUSYs, as well as the
gauge groups themselve are discussed for the full range of models produced as
well as models containing GUT groups only. Prior results of other large-scale
investigations are compared with these regarding the aforementioned quantities.
Statistical coupling between the gauge groups and the number of ST SUSYs is
also discussed, and it was found that for order-3 extensions there are more
models with enhanced ST SUSY when there is an exceptional group present. Also
discussed are some three-generation GUT models found in the data sets. These
models are unique because they come from basis vectors which still have a
geometric interpretation -- there are no "rank-cuts" in these models.Comment: 65 Pages, 31 Tables, 31 Figure
Searching singlet extensions of the supersymmetric standard model in orbifold compactification of heterotic string
We search for supersymmetric standard model realizations with extra singlets
and extra using the heterotic string compactification on the orbifold with two Wilson lines. We analyze the vacuum restabilization
mechanism for three representative Pati-Salam string models obtained in the
literature and present detailed results for the effective superpotential
compatible with the string selection rules. An automated selection of
semi-realistic vacua along flat directions in the non-Abelian singlet modes
field space is performed by requiring the presence of massless pairs of
electroweak Higgs bosons having trilinear superpotential couplings with
massless singlet modes and the decoupling of color triplet exotic modes needed

CP Violation in Supersymmetric U(1)' Models
The supersymmetric CP problem is studied within superstring-motivated
extensions of the MSSM with an additional U(1)' gauge symmetry broken at the
TeV scale. This class of models offers an attractive solution to the mu problem
of the MSSM, in which U(1)' gauge invariance forbids the bare mu term, but an
effective mu parameter is generated by the vacuum expectation value of a
Standard Model singlet S which has superpotential coupling of the form SH_uH_d
to the electroweak Higgs doublets. The effective mu parameter is thus
dynamically determined as a function of the soft supersymmetry breaking
parameters, and can be complex if the soft parameters have nontrivial
CP-violating phases. We examine the phenomenological constraints on the
reparameterization invariant phase combinations within this framework, and find
that the supersymmetric CP problem can be greatly alleviated in models in which
the phase of the SU(2) gaugino mass parameter is aligned with the soft
trilinear scalar mass parameter associated with the SH_uH_d coupling. We also
study how the phases filter into the Higgs sector, and find that while the
Higgs sector conserves CP at the renormalizable level to all orders of
perturbation theory, CP violation can enter at the nonrenormalizable level at
one-loop order. In the majority of the parameter space, the lightest Higgs
boson remains essentially CP even but the heavier Higgs bosons can exhibit
large CP-violating mixings, similar to the CP-violating MSSM with large mu

Evaluation of prediagnosis emergency department presentations in patients with active tuberculosis:the role of chest radiography, risk factors and symptoms
Introduction London has a high rate of tuberculosis (TB) with 2572 cases reported in 2014. Cases are more common in non-UK born, alcohol-dependent or homeless patients. The emergency department (ED) presents an opportunity for the diagnosis of TB in these patient groups. This is the first study describing the clinico-radiological characteristics of such attendances in two urban UK hospitals for pulmonary TB (PTB) and extrapulmonary TB (EPTB). Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the London TB Register (LTBR) and hospital records to identify patients who presented to two London ED's in the 6â
months prior to their ultimate TB diagnosis 2011â2012. Results 397 TB cases were identified. 39% (154/397) had presented to the ED in the 6â
months prior to diagnosis. In the study population, the presence of cough, weight loss, fever and night sweats only had prevalence rates of 40%, 34%, 34% and 21%, respectively. Chest radiography was performed in 76% (117/154) of patients. For cases where a new diagnosis of TB was suspected, 73% (41/56) had an abnormal radiograph, compared with 36% (35/98) of patients where it was not. There was an abnormality on a chest radiograph in 73% (55/75) of PTB cases and also in 40% (21/52) of EPTB cases where a film was requested. Conclusions A large proportion of patients with TB present to ED. A diagnosis was more likely in the presence of an abnormal radiograph, suggesting opportunities for earlier diagnosis if risk factors, symptoms and chest radiograph findings are combined
Prospective isolation and global gene expression analysis of definitive and visceral endoderm
AbstractIn spite of the therapeutic importance of endoderm derivatives such as the pancreas, liver, lung, and intestine, there are few molecular markers specific for early endoderm. In order to identify endoderm-specific genes as well as to define transcriptional differences between definitive and visceral endoderm, we performed microarray analysis on E8.25 definitive and visceral endoderm. We have developed an early endoderm gene expression signature, and clarified the transcriptional similarities and differences between definitive and visceral endoderm. Additionally, we have developed methods for flow cytometric isolation of definitive and visceral endoderm. These results shed light on the mechanism of endoderm formation and should facilitate investigation of endoderm formation from embryonic stem cells
Nematic liquid crystal alignment on chemical patterns
Patterned Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) promoting both homeotropic and planar degenerate alignment of 6CB and 9CB in their nematic phase, were created using microcontact printing of functionalised organothiols on gold films. The effects of a range of different pattern geometries and sizes were investigated, including stripes, circles and checkerboards. EvanescentWave Ellipsometry was used to study the orientation of the liquid crystal (LC) on these patterned surfaces during the isotropic-nematic phase transition. Pretransitional growth of a homeotropic layer was observed on 1 Âčm homeotropic aligning stripes, followed by a homeotropic mono-domain state prior to the
bulk phase transition. Accompanying Monte-Carlo simulations of LCs aligned on nano-patterned surfaces were also performed. These simulations also showed the presence of the homeotropic mono-domain state prior to the transition.</p
Occupy: 'struggles for the common or an 'anti-politics of dignity? Reflections on Hardt and Negri and John Holloway
This article provides a critical examination of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negriâs and John Hollowayâs theory of revolutionary subjectivity, and does so by applying their theories to the Occupy movement of 2011. Its central argument is that one should avoid collapsing âautonomistâ and âopenâ Marxism, for whilst both approaches share Trontiâs (1979) insistence on the constituent role of class struggle, and also share an emphasis on a prefigurative politics which engages a non-hierarchical and highly participatory politics, there nevertheless remain some significant differences between their approaches. Ultimately, when applied to Occupy Movement whilst their theory isnât entirely unproblematic, I will argue that Hardt and Negriâs âautonomistâ approach offers the stronger interpretation, due mainly to their revised historical materialism
A Mechanism for Ordinary-Sterile Neutrino Mixing
Efficient oscillations between ordinary (active) and sterile neutrinos can
occur only if Dirac and Majorana mass terms exist which are both small and
comparable. It is shown that this can occur naturally in a class of string
models, in which higher-dimensional operators in the superpotential lead to an
intermediate scale expectation value for a scalar field and to suppressed Dirac
and Majorana fermion masses.Comment: 12 page
Heterotic Line Bundle Standard Models
In a previous publication, arXiv:1106.4804, we have found 200 models from
heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications with line bundles, which lead to
standard models after taking appropriate quotients by a discrete symmetry and
introducing Wilson lines. In this paper, we construct the resulting standard
models explicitly, compute their spectrum including Higgs multiplets, and
analyze some of their basic properties. After removing redundancies we find
about 400 downstairs models, each with the precise matter spectrum of the
supersymmetric standard model, with one, two or three pairs of Higgs doublets
and no exotics of any kind. In addition to the standard model gauge group, up
to four Green-Schwarz anomalous U(1) symmetries are present in these models,
which constrain the allowed operators in the four-dimensional effective
supergravity. The vector bosons associated to these anomalous U(1) symmetries
are massive. We explicitly compute the spectrum of allowed operators for each
model and present the results, together with the defining data of the models,
in a database of standard models accessible at

Based on these results we analyze elementary phenomenological properties. For
example, for about 200 models all dimension four and five proton decay
