Baseline information on prokaryotic and microeukaryotic plankton communities inside and outside of Indonesian marine lakes
Marine lakes represent a unique and globally rare aquatic environment characterised by lower salinities and pH and higher temperatures than the surrounding open water environment. Here we provide baseline data on planktonic communities of Archaea, Bacteria and microeukaryotes inside and outside (open water habitat) of three marine lakes (Kakaban, Haji Buang and Tanah Bamban) in the Berau region of Indonesia. Compositional variation was highly congruent with the major axis of variation separating open water from marine lake samples for all three domains. Planktonic Archaea mainly consisted of OTUs assigned to Euryarchaeota that were closely
related to organisms in Genbank previously obtained from seawater samples. The majority of archaeal OTUs were most abundant in open water habitat with a few OTUs abundant in all habitats. Most bacterial sequences were assigned to Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidetes with the percentage of Cyanobacteria highest in two of the marine lakes and lowest in the remaining lake (Tanah Bamban). In contrast to Archaea, there were a number of bacterial OTUs that were markedly more abundant in marine lake habitat. Most microeukaryote sequences were assigned to the Alveolata, Stramenopiles, Opisthokonta, Archaeplastida and Hacrobia. As was the case with Bacteria, a number of abundant microeukaryote OTUs were more abundant in marine lake habitat. Our results thus indicate similar compositional responses to the environmental conditions in marine lake habitat across the major domains of life and point to marine lakes harbouring distinct microbial communities.publishe
GHRS and ORFEUS-II Observations of the Highly Ionized Interstellar Medium Toward ESO141-055
We present Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph and ORFEUS-II measurements of
Si IV, CIV, N V, and O VI absorption in the interstellar medium of the Galactic
disk and halo toward the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy ESO141-055. The high
ionization absorption is strong, with line strengths consistent with the
spectral signature expected for hot (log T = 5-6) collisionally ionized gas in
either a ``Galactic fountain'' or an inhomogeneous medium containing a mixture
of conductive interfaces and turbulent mixing layers. The total O VI column
density of log N ~ 15 suggests that the scale height of O VI is large (>3 kpc)
in this direction. Comparison of the high ion column densities with
measurements for other sight lines indicates that the highly ionized gas
distribution is patchy. The amount of O VI perpendicular to the Galactic plane
varies by at least a factor of ~4 among the complete halo sight lines thus far
studied. In addition to the high ion absorption, lines of low ionization
species are also present in the spectra. With the possible exception of Ar I,
which may have a lower than expected abundance resulting from partial
photoionization of gas along the sight line, the absorption strengths are
typical of those expected for the warm, neutral interstellar medium. The sight
line intercepts a cold molecular cloud with log N(H2) ~ 19. The cloud has an
identifiable counterpart in IRAS 100-micron emission maps of this region of the
sky. We detect a Ly-alpha absorber associated with ESO141-055 at z = 0.03492.
This study presents an enticing glimpse into the interstellar and intergalactic
absorption patterns that will be observed at high spectral resolution by the

Methylmercury neurotoxicity in Amazonian children downstream from gold mining.
In widespread informal gold mining in the Amazon Basin, mercury is used to capture the gold particles as amalgam. Releases of mercury to the environment have resulted in the contamination of freshwater fish with methylmercury. In four comparable Amazonian communities, we examined 351 of 420 eligible children between 7 and 12 years of age. In three Tapajós villages with the highest exposures, more than 80% of 246 children had hair-mercury concentrations above 10 microg/g, a limit above which adverse effects on brain development are likely to occur. Neuropsychological tests of motor function, attention, and visuospatial performance showed decrements associated with the hair-mercury concentrations. Especially on the Santa Ana form board and the Stanford-Binet copying tests, similar associations were also apparent in the 105 children from the village with the lowest exposures, where all but two children had hair-mercury concentrations below 10 microg/g. Although average exposure levels may not have changed during recent years, prenatal exposure levels are unknown, and exact dose relationships cannot be generated from this cross-sectional study. Scattering of Phonons by a Vortex in a Superfluid
Recent work gives a transverse force on an isolated moving vortex which is
independent of the normal fluid velocity, but it is widely believed that the
asymmetry of phonon scattering by a vortex leads to a transverse force
dependent on the relative motion of the normal component and the vortex. We
show that a widely accepted derivation of the transverse force is in error, and
that a careful evaluation leads to a much smaller transverse force. We argue
that a different approach is needed to get the correct expression.

Neighborhoods of trees in circular orderings
In phylogenetics, a common strategy used to construct an evolutionary tree for a set of species X is to search in the space of all such trees for one that optimizes some given score function (such as the minimum evolution, parsimony or likelihood score). As this can be computationally intensive, it was recently proposed to restrict such searches to the set of all those trees that are compatible with some circular ordering of the set X. To inform the design of efficient algorithms to perform such searches, it is therefore of interest to find bounds for the number of trees compatible with a fixed ordering in the neighborhood of a tree that is determined by certain tree operations commonly used to search for trees: the nearest neighbor interchange (nni), the subtree prune and regraft (spr) and the tree bisection and reconnection (tbr) operations. We show that the size of such a neighborhood of a binary tree associated with the nni operation is independent of the tree’s topology, but that this is not the case for the spr and tbr operations. We also give tight upper and lower bounds for the size of the neighborhood of a binary tree for the spr and tbr operations and characterize those trees for which these bounds are attained
Spitzer Observations of 3C Quasars and Radio Galaxies: Mid-Infrared Properties of Powerful Radio Sources
We have measured mid-infrared radiation from an orientation-unbiased sample
of 3CRR galaxies and quasars at redshifts 0.4 < z < 1.2 with the IRS and MIPS
instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Powerful emission (L_24micron >
10^22.4 W/Hz/sr) was detected from all but one of the sources. We fit the
Spitzer data as well as other measurements from the literature with synchrotron
and dust components. The IRS data provide powerful constraints on the fits. At
15 microns, quasars are typically four times brighter than radio galaxies with
the same isotropic radio power. Based on our fits, half of this difference can
be attributed to the presence of non-thermal emission in the quasars but not
the radio galaxies. The other half is consistent with dust absorption in the
radio galaxies but not the quasars. Fitted optical depths are anti-correlated
with core dominance, from which we infer an equatorial distribution of dust
around the central engine. The median optical depth at 9.7 microns for objects
with core-dominance factor R > 10^-2 is approximately 0.4; for objects with R <
10^-2, it is 1.1. We have thus addressed a long-standing question in the
unification of FR II quasars and galaxies: quasars are more luminous in the
mid-infrared than galaxies because of a combination of Doppler-boosted
synchrotron emission in quasars and extinction in galaxies, both

9.7 um Silicate Features in AGNs: New Insights into Unification Models
We describe observations of 9.7 um silicate features in 97 AGNs, exhibiting a
wide range of AGN types and of X-ray extinction toward the central nuclei. We
find that the strength of the silicate feature correlates with the HI column
density estimated from fitting the X-ray data, such that low HI columns
correspond to silicate emission while high columns correspond to silicate
absorption. The behavior is generally consistent with unification models where
the large diversity in AGN properties is caused by viewing-angle-dependent
obscuration of the nucleus. Radio-loud AGNs and radio-quiet quasars follow
roughly the correlation between HI columns and the strength of the silicate
feature defined by Seyfert galaxies. The agreement among AGN types suggests a
high-level unification with similar characteristics for the structure of the
obscuring material. We demonstrate the implications for unification models
qualitatively with a conceptual disk model. The model includes an inner
accretion disk (< 0.1 pc in radius), a middle disk (0.1-10 pc in radius) with a
dense diffuse component and with embedded denser clouds, and an outer clumpy

First results from the Very Small Array -- IV. Cosmological parameter estimation
We investigate the constraints on basic cosmological parameters set by the
first compact-configuration observations of the Very Small Array (VSA), and
other cosmological data sets, in the standard inflationary LambdaCDM model.
Using a weak prior 40 < H_0 < 90 km/s/Mpc and 0 < tau < 0.5 we find that the
VSA and COBE_DMR data alone produce the constraints Omega_tot =
1.03^{+0.12}_{-0.12}, Omega_bh^2 = 0.029^{+0.009}_{-0.009}, Omega_cdm h^2 =
0.13^{+0.08}_{-0.05} and n_s = 1.04^{+0.11}_{-0.08} at the 68 per cent
confidence level. Adding in the type Ia supernovae constraints, we additionally
find Omega_m = 0.32^{+0.09}_{-0.06} and Omega_Lambda = 0.71^{+0.07}_{-0.07}.
These constraints are consistent with those found by the BOOMERanG, DASI and
MAXIMA experiments. We also find that, by combining all the recent CMB
experiments and assuming the HST key project limits for H_0 (for which the
X-ray plus Sunyaev--Zel'dovich route gives a similar result), we obtain the
tight constraints Omega_m=0.28^{+0.14}_{-0.07} and Omega_Lambda=
0.72^{+0.07}_{-0.13}, which are consistent with, but independent of, those

Multifrequency spectral analysis of extragalactic radio sources in the 33-GHz VSA catalogue: sources with flattening and upturn spectrum
We present an analysis of the spectral properties of the extragalactic radio sources in the nearly complete Very Small Array (VSA) sample at 33 GHz. Data from different surveys are used to study source spectra between 1.4 and 33 GHz. We find that, in general, spectra cannot be well described by a single power law in the range of frequencies considered. In particular, most of the VSA sources that are steep between 1.4 and 5 GHz, show a spectral flattening at ν > 5 GHz. We identify 20 objects (19 per cent of the sample) clearly characterized by an upturn spectrum, i.e. a spectrum falling at low frequencies (ν less than or similar to 5 GHz) and inverted at higher frequencies. Spectra with high-frequency flattening or upturn shape are supposed to occur when the emission from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) compact core begins to dominate over the component from extended lobes. This picture fits well with the AGN unified scheme, for objects observed at intermediate viewing angles of the AGN jet. Finally, we discuss implications that this class of sources can have on future cosmic microwave background observations at high resolution
Angular position of nodes in the superconducting gap of YBCO
The thermal conductivity of a YBCO single crystal has been studied as a
function of the relative orientation of the crystal axes and a magnetic field
rotating in the Cu-O planes. Measurements were carried out at several
temperatures below T_c and at a fixed field of 30 kOe. A four-fold symmetry
characteristic of a superconducting gap with nodes at odd multiples of 45
degrees in k-space was resolved. Experiments were performed to exclude a
possible macroscopic origin for such a four-fold symmetry such as sample shape
or anisotropic pinning. Our results impose an upper limit of 10% on the weight
of the s-wave component of the essentially d-wave superconducting order
