    Muon Capture on Deuteron and 3He: A Personal Review

    The present status of theoretical and experimental studies of muon capture reactions on light nuclei is reviewed. In particular, the recent results for the two reactions 2H(\mu^-,\nu_\mu)nn and 3He(\mu^-,\nu_\mu)3H are presented, and the unresolved discrepancies among different measurements and calculations, open problems, and future developments are discussed.Comment: 19 pages, submitted to International Journal of Modern Physics

    Nitrogen and Water Stress Impact on Hard Red Spring Wheat Crop Reflectance, Yield and Grain Quality

    Water and nitrogen stress impact hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) crop reflectance, yield and grain quality. To minimize yield losses from nitrogen (N) and water stress, it is essential to apply appropriate N in relation to water stress. The objective of this experiment was to determine the influence of N and water stress on hard red spring wheat crop reflectance, yield, and grain quality. Complete randomized block experiments were conducted in 2003, 2004 and 2004 in dryland and irrigated fields at three locations in central South Dakota. Treatments consisted of N rates and N application at different growth stages. Nitrogen fertilizer rates ranged from 0 to 200 kg ha-1. Nitrogen fertilizer application times were (1) planting; (2) planting and tillering (Feekes 2 -3) or (3) tillering (Feekes 2 -3). Reflectance data was collected using a Cropscan and a CropCircle radiometer. Reflectance data was collected at bare soil, tillering (Feekes 2-3) and flag leaf (Feekes 9-10). Carbon 13 isotopic discrimination (Ä) was used to determine yield loss to nitrogen or water stress. Reflectance data was compared to yield and Ä values or grain quality and Ä values. Correlation of crop reflectance (measured at the different growth stages and by the different radiometers) with yield loss to nitrogen or water and grain quality will be presented. Information presented will be used to make corrective nitrogen treatments and improve marketing decisions as related to grain quality

    Detecting Weed Infestations in Soybean Using Remote Sensing.

    Can weed distribution maps be developed from remote sensed reflectance data? When are the appropriate times to collect these data during the season? What wavebands can be used to distinguish weedy from weed- free areas? This research examined if and when reflectance could be used to distinguish between weed-free and weed-infested (mixed species) areas in soybean and to determine the most useful wavebands to separate crop, weed, and soil reflectance differences. Treatments in the two-year study included no vegetation (bare soil), weed-free soybean, and weed-infested soybean and, in one year, 80% corn residue cover. Reflectance was measured at several sampling times from May through September in 2001 and 2002 using a hand-held multispectral radiometer equipped with band-limited optical interference filters (460 - 1650 nm). Pixel resolution was 0.8-m. Reflectance in the visible spectral range (460 to 700 nm) generally was similar among treatments. In the near-infrared (NIR) range (\u3e700 to 1650 nm), differences among treatments were observed from soybean growth stage V-3 (about 4 weeks after planting) until mid-July to early August depending on crop vigor and canopy closure (76 cm row spacing in 2001 and 19 cm row spacing in 2002). Reflectance rankings in the NIR range when treatments could be differentiated were consistent between years and, from lowest to highest reflectance, were soil \u3c weed-free \u3c weed-infested areas. Increased reflectance from weed-infested areas was most likely due to increased biomass and canopy cover. Residue masked differences between weed-free and weed- infested areas during the early stages of growth due to high reflectance from the residue and reduced weed numbers in these areas. These results suggest that NIR spectral reflectance collected prior to canopy closure can be used to distinguish weed-infested from weed-free areas

    The Mass-Metallicity Relation for Giant Planets

    Exoplanet discoveries of recent years have provided a great deal of new data for studying the bulk compositions of giant planets. Here we identify 47 transiting giant planets (20M<M<20MJ20 M_\oplus < M < 20 M_{\mathrm{J}}) whose stellar insolation is low enough (F<2×108  erg  s1  cm2F_* < 2\times10^8\; \text{erg}\; \text{s}^{-1}\; \text{cm}^{-2}, or roughly Teff<1000T_\text{eff} < 1000) that they are not affected by the hot Jupiter radius inflation mechanism(s). We compute a set of new thermal and structural evolution models and use these models in comparison with properties of the 47 transiting planets (mass, radius, age) to determine their heavy element masses. A clear correlation emerges between the planetary heavy element mass MzM_z and the total planet mass, approximately of the form MzMM_z \propto \sqrt{M}. This finding is consistent with the core accretion model of planet formation. We also study how stellar metallicity [Fe/H] affects planetary metal-enrichment and find a weaker correlation than has been previously reported from studies with smaller sample sizes. We confirm a strong relationship between the planetary metal-enrichment relative to the parent star Zplanet/ZstarZ_{\rm planet}/Z_{\rm star} and the planetary mass, but see no relation in Zplanet/ZstarZ_{\rm planet}/Z_{\rm star} with planet orbital properties or stellar mass. The large heavy element masses of many planets (>50>50 MM_{\oplus}) suggest significant amounts of heavy elements in H/He envelopes, rather than cores, such that metal-enriched giant planet atmospheres should be the rule.     Development of a Method for Evaluating the Yield Goal Approach

    Yield goals have been used to determine N recommendations in South Dakota, North Dakota, and western Minnesota. However, some states, such as Wisconsin and Iowa have eliminated yield goals from N recommendations because of poor correlation between yield and economically optimum N rates. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of switching from a yield goal approach to a non-yield goal approach in South Dakota. Field experiments were conducted in Aurora, South Dakota between 2002 and 2003. Treatments were natural rainfall and natural rainfall + irrigation and four N rates (0, 60, 120, 180 kg N /ha). Plant samples were analyzed for 13C discrimination (Δ) and total N. Research results showed that; (i) adding N rates increased yield and Δ; (ii) applying supplemental irrigation increased yield and decreased Δ; (iii) yields were not influenced by an interaction between water and nitrogen; and (iv) δ15N values increased with irrigation and decreased with increasing N. These results suggest that nitrogen and water stress had independent impact on yield, and irrigation increased N mineralization. These findings partially support the hypothesis that fertilizer rates should be independent of yield goal. Research needs to be conducted to determine the long term impact of changing the recommendation approach on soil N levels

    Biochar is the by-product of a thermal process conducted under low oxygen or oxygen-free conditions (pyrolysis) to convert vegetative biomass to biofuel (Jha et al., 2010). There are a wide variety of end-products that can be manufactured depending on processing parameters and initial feedstocks (Bridgewater, 2003). The pyrolytic process parameters such as temperature, heating rate, and pressure can change the recovery amounts of each end-product, energy values of the bio-oils, and the physico-chemical properties of biochar (Yaman, 2004)

    Do weeds that emerge later in the season justify additional control costs\u27? If crop yield is not reduced or few or no seeds arc added to the soil seed hank, then no control may he needed. Eight weed species were sown in corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean I Glycine max (L.) Mcrr.l (i) before crop emergence, (ii) at crop emergence, (iii) at V-1, and (iv) at V-2 stages of crop growth in 2002 and 2003. Weed seed was sown close to the crop row and thinned to 1.3 plants m 2• Weed growth and fecundity were influenced by species, time of planting, and year. Only barnyarclgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli L.), rcclroot pigwced (Amaranthus retniflexus L.), and vclvetlcaf (Abutilon theophrasti L.) survived to produce seed. Plants from the pre-emergence seeding had the largest canopy and produced the most seeds. Harnyardgrass had maximum canopy cover in early .July in corn and late .Inly in soybean hut only produced seed in corn. Rcclroot pigweecl and vclvctleaf had maximum canopy cover in late August or midSeptember, and some plants from most seeding elates survived and produced seed in both corn and soybean. However, plants that grew from seed sown at V-1 and V-2 crnp grnwth stages did not reduce yield or biomass of adjacent crop plants, had low fecundity, and may not warrant treatment. Control may be necessary, however, to prevent yield losses if weeds arc present at high densities or to prevent establishment of uncommon species

    Geostatistical Characterization of the Spatial Distribution of Adult Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Emergence

    Geostatistical methods were used to characterize spatial variability in western ( Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) and northern ( Diabrotica barberi Smith & Lawrence) corn rootworm adult emergence patterns. Semivariograms were calculated for adult emergence density of corn rootworm populations in fields of continuous corn and rotated (corn/soybean) corn. Adult emergence densities were generally greater for northern corn rootworms than for western corn rootworms. The spatial structures of the adult rootworm emergence were aggregated as described by spherical spatial models for western corn rootworm and exponential models for northern corn rootworm. Range of spatial dependence varied from 180 to 550 m for western corn rootworm and 172 to 281 m for northern corn rootworm. Semivariograrn models were used to produce contour density maps of adult populations in the fields, based on grid sampling of actual emerging adult populations
