In search of innovation capability and its sources in local government organizations: a critical interpretative synthesis of the literature
Empirical research has identified a long list of antecedents that promote innovation in local government organizations. However, less is known about how and why diverse antecedents—as well as their interplay—stimulate local government organizations to innovate and create public value. We address this gap through a systematic and critical interpretive synthesis of the empirical literature on innovation and entrepreneurship in local government organizations. Our review advances theory development about public sector innovation processes by (1) showing how antecedents relate to each other across levels of analysis in a process model and (2) explicating why local government organizations generate/adopt innovation through innovation capability. Our emerging theory offers several contributions to the public sector innovation literature and a forward-looking research agenda

Intensity of innovation in public sector organizations: The role of push and pull factors
The public sector is under pressure to provide new public services with increasingly scarce resources. In response, practitioners and academics have called for more innovation in the public sector. Our understanding of sources of innovation within public sector organizations, however, is inadequate. Motivated by this gap, we develop a conceptual model of how push and pull sources enable innovation within public sector organizations. Key to our theory is that push and pull sources of innovation are enabled by innovation capabilities. Five hypotheses are tested using cross‐country survey data from European public sector organizations. Empirical analysis offers strong support for the central role played by innovation capability in enabling push and pull sources of innovation within public sector organizations. This article advances knowledge of the sources of innovation in the public sector and extends theorizing on push and pull mechanisms by examining their relevance to innovation in a public sector context.publishedVersionUnit Licence Agreemen

Entrepreneurial Identity and Identity Work
This paper examines how the social identity of an entrepreneur influences his or her behaviour when engaged in new venture formation. Building on the typology of entrepreneurial identities developed by Fauchart and Gruber, this study examines the relationship between the social identity of the entrepreneur and subsequent entrepreneurial behaviour using a mixed-method approach. Based on interviews with entrepreneurs in six start-ups within the tourism sector and on previous literature, three hypotheses were developed regarding the relationship between entrepreneurial identity and entrepreneurial behaviour (causation, effectuation). Subsequently, the hypotheses were tested using a survey among a sample of entrepreneurs who registered a new firm in 2013. The study finds that the entrepreneurial identity influences whether the individual predominantly engages in effectual or causal behaviour. Hence, the study contributes by focusing on entrepreneurial identity as an important factor shaping the behaviours of entrepreneurs. In addition, we add to the understanding of entrepreneurs as a heterogeneous group. Entrepreneurs vary in terms of their identity, and this variation has consequences for their entrepreneurial behaviour. Finally, by adopting a mixed-method approach, this study benefits from and contributes to the interaction of qualitative and quantitative data in entrepreneurship research. </p
