SCREENING METHOD FOR ASSESSING PESTICIDE LEACHING POTENTIAL
Abstract
Screening methods are required in order to determine which
pesticides should receive greatest attention with respect to
environmental problems. Several authors have proposed
screening methods for determining whether a pesticide is
likely to leach to groundwater. The Groundwater Ubiquity
Score (GUS) developed by GUSTAFSON (5) has been used,
as the first step of a tiered approach for specifying which
chemicals should deserve longer attention and expensive
studies of leachability. However, GUS is empirically based
and has a deficiency due to the prediction of anomalous
negative values for pesticides with short half-life and/or
large sorption coefficient. In the present work, it was
developed a method for evaluating the leachability
denominated index LIX as simple as index GUS however
enabling faster and better visualization and interpretation of
results
PESTICIDE LEACHING POTENTIAL ASSESSMENT IN MULTILAYERED SOILS
Abstract
The Attenuation Factor ( AF) model generalized for multilayered
soils was used to estimate the leaching potentials of
non-ionic and non-ionizable pesticides in Brazilian soils. The
model applied takes into account pesticide and soil properties,
as well as the net recharge rate. Advective transport of
pesticides and piston water flow, instantaneous equilibrium
between phases in soil, and first-order pesticide degradation
were assumed. The highest overall leaching potential
pesticides were Tebuthiuron and Hexazinone, which present
half-life ( t½)
values exceeding 90 days and sorption
coefficient ( Koc) less than 80 mL/g. For all of the pesticides
in the three soils, the percent of the pesticide entering at the
top of each layer that exits, the bottom of that layer increased
with depth because of the decrease in the pesticide travel
time ( tr), which is, in turn, due to the lower retardation factor
( RF). In a Typic Quartzipsamment soil, the shortest water
travel time values, due to the lowest field capacity ( FC)
values, resulted in the highest AF values and leaching
potential. Results allow estimating that about 54% of
Tebuthiuron and 13% of Hexazinone that reaches the soil
surface would pass through the top 120 cm of the Typic
Quartzipsamment
( AF). O modelo aplicado considerou propriedades do
30 dias. Os resultados obtidos permitiram estimar que 15,2%
do Monocrotofós, 5,7% do Carbofuran e 2,5% do Metalaxil
ASSESSING LEACHING POTENTIAL OF PESTICIDES IN OXISOL FROM GUAÍRA
REGION, STATE OF SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL
Abstract
The leaching potentials of nineteen pesticides in the top 60 cm of a Brazilian Oxisol from
Guaira region, São Paulo state were estimated by means of the Attenuation Factor ( AF)
method. The model applied considers pesticide and soil properties, as well as, the net
recharge rate. The highest leaching potential pesticides were: Monocrotophos >
Carbofuran > Metalaxyl > Aldicarb > Metolachlor > Metamidophos. For all of the pesticides
studied in that Brazilian Oxisol, the leaching retardation due to the volatilization was very
low when compared with the retardation due to sorption. All of the pesticides receiving
the top leaching potential ranking were the most soluble pesticides , and they have
organic carbon partitioning coefficient values equal 200 mL/g or lower. For almost all of
these pesticides, half-life values exceed 30 days. Results allowed to estimate that
15.2% of Monocrotophos, 5.7% of Carbofuran, and 2.5% of Metalaxyl that reaches the
soil surface would pass through the top 60 cm of the soil profile, and about 8 mg per
100 g of Monocrotophos applied on the soil surface would pass through the top 3 m.
According to the AF values calculated, the leaching potential of the pesticides in use in Guaira (SP) agricultural areas with Oxisols is low, as well the consequent ground water
contamination risk
SORÇÃO DO HERBICIDA 2,4-D EM SOLOS BRASILEIROS
Neste trabalho procurou-se gerar e discutir dados
sobre sorção de pesticidas ácidos em solos
brasileiros, considerando sua dependência do pH.
Amostras de solos foram coletadas em diferentes
regiões do Brasil e suas propriedades determinadas
(% de argila, % de CO e pH). Valores do coeficiente
de sorção do herbicida 2,4-D foram determinados
em laboratório usando teste em equilíbrio padrão e
cromatografia a líquido de alta eficiência (CLAE). O
No entanto,
do pH.
subestimada.
SORPTION OF 2,4-D HERBICIDES IN BRAZILIAN SOILS
Abstract
This work aimed to generate and discuss data on acid pesticides sorption in Brazilian soils, taking into account the pH
dependence. Soil samples were collected in different regions of Brazil and their properties were determined (% argila,
% CO and pH. Sorption coefficient of 2,4-D were measured by means of a standard batch equilibrium method and high
performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The sorption coefficient (Kd) was estimated, and the organic
carbon normalized sorption coefficient (Koc) was calculated for each soil. The Koc results are between 21.3 and
306.5 mL/g, while the Koc values from international literature are in the 20 to 60 mL/g range. The Koc values tend to
increase in soils with large organic carbon content. However, great Koc values variation occurred among soils in the
same class. Additionally, the effects of pH in 2,4-D sorption were studied in a Brazilian Oxisol. The Kd and Koc values
decreased with pH increasing. Sorption of 2,4-D, as an acid compound, is mainly driven by its dissociation. However 2,4-D dissociation is not enough to explain the variation in Kd (or Koc) as a function of pH. In general, anionic-form sorption
of acidic pesticides has been overvalued; on the other hand, the overall effect of organic matter dissociation owing to pH
changes has been overlooked
SORPTION OF S-TRIAZINES IN BRAZILIAN RAINFOREST SOILS
This research was conducted to evaluate the sorption of Ametryn, Atrazine, Simazine, Prometrine and Metamitron to soils from "Mata Atlântica" at Ubatuba region (Atlantic rainforest soils), employing the batch equilibrium approach. The herbicides were weakly retained in soils with low soil organic matter (SOM) content and thus presenting high potential to water contamination. All herbicides have shown high Koc at Typic Humaquepts soil, the higher in SOM content. The sorption isotherms for the herbicides at Typic Humaquepts soil suggested specific interactions between herbicides and SOM probably with partial protonation of herbicides followed by ion-exchange processes and/or hydrogen bonding formation of hydroxyl groups on the SOM surface.
do Espraiado, embora dificilmente alcançando a zona
saturada do Aqüífero Guarani (situada, bem abaixo
do perfil estudado neste trabalho).
TEBUTHIURON AND DIURON LEACHING IN SOIL COLUMNS
Abstract
A lysimeter study was developed to investigate the leaching of Tebuthiuron and Diuron in soil columns with different
textures collected in a typical direct recharge area of the Guarani Aquifer, in Ribeirão Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The
analytical method for determination of residues in water was high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after
extraction by shaking the sample with diclhoromethane:isopropanol (9:1). The results showed that both herbicides
leached faster in the Typic Quartzipsamment being Tebuthiuron more accentuated. This result suggests that the organic
carbon content, besides the association between the low adsortive capacity of Tebuthiuron and its long persistence may
be the responsibles by the difference. The studied herbicides may present contamination risk potential of the Espraiado
watershed although reaching with difficulties the saturated zone of Guarani Aquifer situated right below the studied
profile in this work. Tebuthiuron amount was larger than amount of Diuron in both cases, probably due to soil organic
carbon content and large herbicide persistence. Further studies are necessary to investigate the leaching of herbicides
in this region
This research is in support of weed management programs. A field experiment was carried out in Botucatu (São Paulo, Brazil), with the objective to determine the critical period of broadleaf weed interference on soybean, using statistical procedures of regression analysis. A randomized block design was used with 3 replications. The crop was kept weed infcsted for different periods. The criticar period of weed interference determined by the Broken-Stick modo was between 21-30 days after crop emergence. Broadleaf weeds in soybeanel crops can be controled with single use of remedial methods without residual effect
Environmental Behaviour of Metolachlor and Diuron in a Tropical Soil in the Central Region of Brazil
The environmental behaviour of metolachlor and diuron was studied in the Central-western region of Brazil, by means of a field study where six experimental plots were installed. The soil was classified as a Latosol, and the soil horizons were characterized. Sorption of metolachlor and diuron was evaluated in laboratory batch experiments. Metolachlor and diuron were applied to the experimental plots on uncultivated soil in October 2003. From this date to March 2004, the following processes were studied: leaching, runoff and dissipation in top soil. K (oc) of metolachlor varied from 179 to 264 mL g(-1) in the soil horizons. K (oc) of diuron in the Ap horizon was 917 mL g(-1), decreasing significantly in the deeper horizons. Field dissipation half-lives of metolachlor and diuron were 18 and 15 days, respectively. In percolated water, metolachlor was detected in concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 2.84 mu g L-1. In runoff water and sediment, metolachlor was detected in decreasing concentrations throughout the period of study. Losses of 0.02% and 0.54% of the applied amount by leaching and runoff, respectively, were observed confirming the high mobility of this herbicide in the environment. In percolated water, diuron was detected with low frequency but in relatively high concentrations (up to 6.29 mu g L-1). In runoff water and soil, diuron was detected in decreasing concentrations until 70 days after application, totalizing 13.9% during the whole sampling period. These results show the importance of practices to reduce runoff avoiding surface water contamination by these pesticides, particularly diuron
