    Far infrared maser communications technology

    An optically pumped FIR laser was constructed and tested. Optimum operating conditions were determined with CH3OH as the lasing medium. The laser was found to operate equally well with flowing gas or in a sealed off configuration. The FIR cavity stability and pump laser stability were found to have significant problems. The absorption coefficient per unit pressure of 1-1 difluoroethylene at the P(22) and P(24) lines of the 10.4 micron CO2 band was measured. The FIR line pumped by P(22) occurs at approximately 890 microns, which may be in an atmospheric transmission window. It was found that significant Stark tuning of absorption lines of methanol and 1-1 difluoroethylene can be accomplished, even at the usual 100 to 300 mTorr operating pressures of FIR lasers. This means that the use of Stark tuning may enable more effective use of pump laser output

    Interdigitated photodetectors of various geometries have been fabricated on GaAlAs/GaAs heterostructure material. Optical response characteristics of these devices have been examined at both dc and microwave frequencies. The microwave response, at frequencies to 8 GHz, was studied by illuminating the devices with the output of an internally modulated GaAlAs diode laser. Results of these measurements are presented and compared with that of GaAs photoconductors

    Applications of photoacoustic techniques to the study of jet fuel residue

    It has been known for many years that fuels for jet aircraft engines demonstrate thermal instability. One manifestation of this thermal instability is the formation of deleterious fuel-derived thermally-induced deposits on surfaces of the aircraft's fuel-handling system. The results of an investigation of the feasibility of applying photoacoustic techniques to the study of the physical properties of these thermal deposits are presented. Both phase imaging and magnitude imaging and spectroscopy were investigated. It is concluded that the use of photoacoustic techniques in the study of films of the type encountered in this investigation is not practical

    Optical distribution of control signals in electronically steered phased array antennas is being considered. A demonstration experiment is described in which a high speed hybrid GaAs optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) was used to control an eight element phased array antenna. The OEIC, which accepts a serial optical control signal as input and converts it to 16 demultiplexed parallel outputs, was used to control the monolithic GaAs phase shifters of a Ka-band patch panel array antenna.     Photoresponse of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) granular and epitaxial superconducting thin films

    The response is reported of thin films of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) with either a very grainy or a smooth epitaxial morphology to visible radiation. SrTiO3 substrates were employed for both types of films. The grainy films were formed by sequential multi-layer electron beam evaporation while the epitaxial films were formed by laser ablation. Both films were patterned into H shaped detectors via a negative photolithographic process employing a Br/ethanol etchant. The bridge region of the H was 50 microns wide. The patterned films formed by laser ablation and sequential evaporation had critical temperatures of 74 K and 72 K respectively. The bridge was current biased and illuminated with chopped He-Ne laser radiation and the voltage developed in response to the illumination was measured. A signal was detected only above the critical temperature and the peak of the response coincided with the resistive transition for both types of films although the correspondence was less exact for the grainy film.     The results are presented of a continuing research and development program the objective of which is to develop a reduced bandwidth television system and a technique for television transmission of holograms. The result of the former is a variable frame rate television system, the operation of which was demonstrated for both black-and-white and color signals. This system employs a novel combination of the inexpensive mass storage capacity of a magnetic disc with the reliability of a digital system for time expansion and compression. Also reported are the results of a theoretical analysis and preliminary feasibility experiment of an innovative system for television transmission of holograms using relatively conventional TV equipment along with a phase modulated reference wave for production of the original interference pattern

    Abstract. This study seeks to examine astronomers ’ use of their literature through a citation analysis of a very current sub-section of scientific literature in the field. The paper specifically analyzes currency of references, types of sources, format of sources, and cross-disciplinary sources. Research published in refereed journals is the most frequently cited material among astronomers, making up nearly 80 % of the total number of references. Of these, the majority are references to literature from the core journals in the field. Also, currency is of relative importance to researchers in the field, as nearly 56 % of all references were to materials published in the last seven years, and nearly 90 % to that published since 1980. Only 4 % were to materials published before 1970. 1
