Confined coherence and analytic properties of Green's functions
A simple model of noninteracting electrons with a separable one-body
potential is used to discuss the possible pole structure of single particle
Green's functions for fermions on unphysical sheets in the complex frequency
plane as a function of the system parameters. The poles in the exact Green's
function can cross the imaginary axis, in contrast to recent claims that such a
behaviour is unphysical. As the Green's function of the model has the same
functional form as an approximate Green's function of coupled Luttinger liquids
no definite conclusions concerning the concept of "confined coherence" can be
drawn from the locations of the poles of this Green's function.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Veterinary technology is an emerging profession within the veterinary and allied animal health fields in Australia and affords graduates the opportunity to contribute to the small but growing body of literature within this discipline. This study describes the introduction of a contextualised assessment task to develop students’ research capability, competence and confidence in professional writing, and to engage them with the academic publishing process. Students worked in self-selected dyads to author a scientific case report, of publishable standard, based on authentic cases from their clinical practicum. Intrinsic to the task, students attended a series of workshops that explored topics such as critiquing the literature, professional writing styles and oral presentation skills. Assessment was multi-staged with progressive feedback, including peer review, and culminated with students presenting their abstracts at a mock conference. Students reported the task to be an enjoyable and valuable learning experience which improved their competence and confidence in scientific writing; supported by a comparison of previously submitted work. Linking scientific writing skills to clinical practice experiences enhanced learning outcomes and may foster the professionalisation of students within this emerging discipline
MgB2 tunnel junctions and 19 K low-noise dc superconducting quantum interference devices
Point contact junctions made from two pieces of MgB2 can be adjusted to
exhibit either superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) or
superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) current-voltage
characteristics. The SIS characteristics are in good agreement with the
standard tunneling model for s-wave superconductors, and yield an energy gap of
(2.02 +/- 0.08) meV. The SNS characteristics are in good agreement with the
predictions of the resistively-shunted junction model. DC Superconducting
QUantum Interference Devices made from two SNS junctions yield magnetic field
noise as low as 35 fT/Hz^{1/2} at 19 K.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

A journal article chronicling labour relations in the Rhodesian mining industry in the period 1940 to 1974.The mining industry of Rhodesia was an important component of the 'industrial complex’ that developed after 1940. However, the proletarianization of African mine-workers was influenced by conditions that differentiated it from other forms of labour mobilization typical of the urban-industrial economy. The features of proletarianization unique to this industry were promoted by the pattern of accumulation and the specific requirements of production. These characteristics were reflected in institutional arrangements, labour legislation and unionisation process. Labour mobilization under mining production differed too from domestic and plantation production, the other non-industrial sectors. The State recognized these differences in its designing of labour policies
Development of a contra-rotating tidal current turbine and analysis of performance
A contra-rotating marine current turbine has a number of attractive features: nearzero reactive torque on the support structure, near-zero swirl in the wake, and high relative inter-rotor rotational speeds. Modified blade element modelling theory has been used to design and predict the characteristics of such a turbine, and a model turbine and test rig have been constructed. Tests in a towing tank demonstrated the feasibility of the concept. Power coefficients were high for such a small model and in excellent agreement with predictions, confirming the accuracy of the computational modelling procedures. Highfrequency blade loading data were obtained in the course of the experiments. These show the anticipated dynamic components for a contra-rotating machine. Flow visualization of the wake verified the lack of swirl behind the turbine. A larger machine is presently under construction for sea trials

Deconfined Fermions but Confined Coherence?
The cuprate superconductors and certain organic conductors exhibit transport
which is qualitatively anisotropic, yet at the same time other properties of
these materials strongly suggest the existence of a Fermi surface and low
energy excitations with substantial free electron character. The former of
these features is very difficult to account for if the material possesses three
dimensional coherence, while the latter is inconsistent with a description
based on a two dimensional fixed point. We therefore present a new proposal for
these materials in which they are categorized by a fixed point at which
transport in one direction is not renormalization group irrelevant, but is
intrinsically incoherent, i.e. the incoherence is present in a pure system, at
zero temperature. The defining property of such a state is that single electron
coherence is confined to lower dimensional subspaces (planes or chains) so that
it is impossible to observe interference effects between histories which
