thesisEndotoxins are high molecular weight lipopolysaccharides, derived primarily from gram-negative bacteria. They produce a wide variety of effects in animals and man including fever, alterations of blood leukocyte counts and glucose levels, the Shwartzman reaction, tumor necrotizing effects and cardiovascular effects. Endotoxins are responsible for various so-called " injection fevers" which have been of interest since the late 1800's and which are caused by contamination of solutions by gram-negative bacteria. The possibility of such contamination must be taken into account in any study of pyrogenic effect supposedly induced by another agent. Recent reviews discussing various physiological effects of endotoxin include those by Bennett and Cluff (1957), Gilbert (1960) and Atkins (1960). The present survey will consider only those aspects of the pyrogenic effect and changed in leukocyte counts which are important for a comparison with enterotoxin and for an understanding of some of the pyrogenic agents

Design and evaluation of the emissions measurement components for a heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicle mobile emissions measurement system (MEMS)

The objective of this study was the design, construction, and preliminary qualification of the Mobile Emissions Measurement System (MEMS) for in-use, on-road testing of heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles. This included selection of emissions analyzers and sampling system components capable of producing emissions results of similar accuracy to those attained with laboratory-grade instruments. A thorough investigation of commercially available systems, and a literature review, identified no suitable designs. Therefore, a complete emissions measurement system, designed specifically for the testing of heavy-duty diesel powered vehicles, was developed using available components.;The candidate analyzers that performed successfully during bottled gas bench tests were then incorporated into a sampling system and tested with diesel engine exhaust. Emissions concentrations reported by the MEMS were compared to concentrations reported by laboratory-grade analyzers. Results indicated that the system is capable of reporting cycle-integrated, brake-specific CO2 within 3%, and NOx within 5% of laboratory data over an FTP cycle

Premarital sex in Vietnam: Is the current concern with adolescent reproductive health warranted?

To the extent that research on Vietnamese adolescents has been conducted, it has been concerned with unprotected and unsanctioned sexual activity and its health consequences, namely abortion and sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV. The question we pose is whether this concern is warranted. Is the population community justified in focusing its attention on early sexual activity and HIV risk? Even if the sexual behavior of young people can be considered problematic, are there perhaps other aspects of young people’s lives that should give us greater pause? The paper reviews the literature on adolescent sexual behavior in Vietnam and analyzes data on premarital sex and reproductive behavior from a 1999 survey conducted in six provinces among nearly 1,500 adolescent boys and girls aged 15-22. Data on other aspects of young people’s lives are summarized, in particular schooling and work, in order to put the sexual activity data in perspective. We conclude that the lack of adequate employment opportunities may be more of a threat to adolescent reproductive health than risky sexual behaviors per se—a situation that effective economic policies can remedy
