    Microcassiope minor (Dana, 1852): a description of the first stage zoea (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Xanthidae)

    The first stage zoea of Microcassiope minor (Dana, 1852) is described, illustrated and compared with thirteen other known Xanthinae. This comparison suggests that M. minor is closely related to another Atlantic Ocean xanthid, Nanocassiope melanodactyla (A. Milne-Edwards, 1867). Such an affinity may indicate that the genus Nanocassiope Guinot, 1967) is not a homogenous taxon

    Chelarctus and Crenarctus (Crustacea: Scyllaridae) from Coral Sea waters, with molecular identification of their larvae

    Chelarctus Holthuis, 2002 is widely distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific, but its biogeographic patterns are unknown because Southern Hemisphere areas, such as the Coral Sea, remained poorly explored. Recent cruises organized by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle of Paris and the Australian Institute of Marine Science allowed the molecular identification of Crenarctus crenatus (Whitelegge, 1900), Chelarctus aureus (Holthuis, 1963) and Chelarctus crosnieri Holthuis, 2002 phyllosomae. The Coral Sea C. crenatus larvae are identical to stages IX and X of Scyllarus sp. Z, described in detail by Webber and Booth (2001). Descriptions of phyllosoma stages VI, IX and X of Ch. aureus and stages IX and X of Ch. crosnieri are also presented here. Morphological differences between Crenarctus and Chelarctus larvae are established for the first time and previous misidentifications in the literature are re-assessed

    Electromagnetic absorption of a pinned Wigner crystal at finite temperatures

    We investigate the microwave absorption of a pinned, two-dimensional Wigner crystal in a strong magnetic field at finite temperatures. Using a model of a uniform commensurate pinning potential, we analyze thermal broadening of the electromagnetic absorption resonance. Surprisingly, we find that the pinning resonance peak should remain sharp even when the temperature is comparable or greater than the peak frequency. This result agrees qualitatively with recent experimental observations of the ac conductivity in two-dimensional hole systems in a magnetically induced insulating state. It is shown, in analogy with Kohn's theorem, that the electron-electron interaction does not affect the response of a harmonically pinned Wigner crystal to a spatially uniform external field at any temperature. We thus focus on anharmonicity in the pinning potential as a source of broadening. Using a 1/N expansion technique, we show that the broadening is introduced through the self-energy corrections to the magnetophonon Green's functions.Comment: 21 pages, 9 eps figure

    The cylindrical cell approximation in thermal utilization

    In solving the neutron diffusion equation in one cell of an infinite lattice, a common procedure is to replace the rectangular (or hexagonal) cell with an equivalent cylindrical cell. In order to estimate the effect of this approximation a new method is presented in which the flux in the entire cell (not the equivalent cylindrical cell) is expanded in a Fourier cosine series. Then the boundary conditions over the cell surface are satisfied exactly. Furthermore, algebraic equations for the expansion coefficients of the flux are obtained because the integrals over the cell can be done in closed form. It is found that truncation of the flux series after 10 terms gives good results. The method is felt to have more general application than to the actual problem treated here since such `mixed geometry' problems frequently arise in reactor physics and in other areas as well.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/33375/1/0000773.pd

    Transcriptome-wide association study for postpartum depression implicates altered B-cell activation and insulin resistance

    Postpartum depression (PPD) affects 1 in 7 women and has negative mental health consequences for both mother and child. However, the precise biological mechanisms behind the disorder are unknown. Therefore, we performed the largest transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) for PPD (482 cases, 859 controls) to date using RNA-sequencing in whole blood and deconvoluted cell types. No transcriptional changes were observed in whole blood. B-cells showed a majority of transcriptome-wide significant results (891 transcripts representing 789 genes) with pathway analyses implicating altered B-cell activation and insulin resistance. Integration of other data types revealed cell type-specific DNA methylation loci and disease-associated eQTLs (deQTLs), but not hormones/neuropeptides (estradiol, progesterone, oxytocin, BDNF), serve as regulators for part of the transcriptional differences between cases and controls. Further, deQTLs were enriched for several brain region-specific eQTLs, but no overlap with MDD risk loci was observed. Altogether, our results constitute a convergence of evidence for pathways most affected in PPD with data across different biological mechanisms

    Game Theoretical Interactions of Moving Agents

    Game theory has been one of the most successful quantitative concepts to describe social interactions, their strategical aspects, and outcomes. Among the payoff matrix quantifying the result of a social interaction, the interaction conditions have been varied, such as the number of repeated interactions, the number of interaction partners, the possibility to punish defective behavior etc. While an extension to spatial interactions has been considered early on such as in the "game of life", recent studies have focussed on effects of the structure of social interaction networks. However, the possibility of individuals to move and, thereby, evade areas with a high level of defection, and to seek areas with a high level of cooperation, has not been fully explored so far. This contribution presents a model combining game theoretical interactions with success-driven motion in space, and studies the consequences that this may have for the degree of cooperation and the spatio-temporal dynamics in the population. It is demonstrated that the combination of game theoretical interactions with motion gives rise to many self-organized behavioral patterns on an aggregate level, which can explain a variety of empirically observed social behaviors

    The 3D Structure of N132D in the LMC: A Late-Stage Young Supernova Remnant

    We have used the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the 2.3m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory to map the [O III] 5007{\AA} dynamics of the young oxygen-rich supernova remnant N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud. From the resultant data cube, we have been able to reconstruct the full 3D structure of the system of [O III] filaments. The majority of the ejecta form a ring of ~12pc in diameter inclined at an angle of 25 degrees to the line of sight. We conclude that SNR N132D is approaching the end of the reverse shock phase before entering the fully thermalized Sedov phase of evolution. We speculate that the ring of oxygen-rich material comes from ejecta in the equatorial plane of a bipolar explosion, and that the overall shape of the SNR is strongly influenced by the pre-supernova mass loss from the progenitor star. We find tantalizing evidence of a polar jet associated with a very fast oxygen-rich knot, and clear evidence that the central star has interacted with one or more dense clouds in the surrounding ISM.Comment: Accepted for Publication in Astrophysics & Space Science, 18pp, 8 figure

    Discovery, Timing, and Multiwavelength Observations of the Black Widow Millisecond Pulsar PSR J1555-2908

    We report the discovery of PSR J1555-2908, a 1.79 ms radio and gamma-ray pulsar in a 5.6 hr binary system with a minimum companion mass of 0.052 M ⊙. This fast and energetic ( Ė=3×1035 erg s-1) millisecond pulsar was first detected as a gamma-ray point source in Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) sky survey observations. Guided by a steep-spectrum radio point source in the Fermi error region, we performed a search at 820 MHz with the Green Bank Telescope that first discovered the pulsations. The initial radio pulse timing observations provided enough information to seed a search for gamma-ray pulsations in the LAT data, from which we derive a timing solution valid for the full Fermi mission. In addition to the discovery and timing of radio and gamma-ray pulsations, we searched for X-ray pulsations using NICER but no significant pulsations were detected. We also obtained time-series r-band photometry that indicates strong heating of the companion star by the pulsar wind. Material blown off the heated companion eclipses the 820 MHz radio pulse during inferior conjunction of the companion for ≈10% of the orbit, which is twice the angle subtended by its Roche lobe in an edge-on system. © 2022.
