Cities, Global Cities and Glasgow - Some Reflections

    Get PDF
Globally, cities are now the dominant locations for production, consumption and human settlement - and their number, scale and influence is set to increase in the century ahead. Cities increasingly compete in a globalised economy and this has profound impacts on how cities organise themselves to be economically and socially successful. Globalisation and the changing nature of business and social innovation are discussed, as are the ‘cycles’ of city development that cities need to pursue to be successful. The issues facing cities worldwide are viewed through the case of Glasgow, Scotland’s global city. In surmising the city’s performance in a wider global context, it concludes that Glasgow needs ‘cycle 3’ tools, taxes and tactics to be successful in the future and that new city governance reform is a key aspect of any future success

A history of the concept of interpersonal relations in nursing based on the psychiatric nursing textbook literature

    Get PDF
Many nurses would assume that interpersonal relations in nursing is a reasonably modern concept that originated with work of Hildagarde Peplau in 1952. However, there is evidence of concepts and ideas that resonate with interpersonal relations being evident in the psychiatric nursing textbook literature from its beginnings in 1885. The aim of this article is to provide an outline of ideas about interpersonal relations in nursing as presented in the psychiatric nursing textbook literature between 1885 and 2013 and trace the development of these ideas over that timeframe. This study uses Bevir’s methodology known as The Logic of the History of Ideas. This is a post-analytical framework. Concepts related to interpersonal relation in nursing can be found throughout the psychiatric nursing textbook literature. The language may not be consistent with current language use but nevertheless, the ideas and concepts evident in the literature do demonstrate a consistent presence of thinking about interpersonal relations

The Dome of the Rock: the historical, political and religious motivations behind its construction.

This thesis provides a hypothesis as to why the Dome of the Rock was built. I examine various scholarly theories concerning the construction of the first notable work of Islamic architecture, which was built in Jerusalem during the last decade of the 7th century CE. I argue that historic events and individuals, beginning in pre-Islamic Arabia and running through the establishment of the Umayyad caliphate at Damascus, acted as catalysts for the building\u27s creation. It is my thesis that the construction of the Dome of the Rock was a potent weapon in the war of propaganda between rival Islamic factions, all of whom recognized the unique architectural heritage of Jerusalem that included both Christian and Jewish structures, foremost among them the site of the destroyed Solomonic Temple where the Dome of the Rock would be built
