    Circumbinary habitability niches

    ABSTRACT: Binaries could provide the best niches for life in the Galaxy. Although counterintuitive, this assertion follows directly from stellar tidal interaction theory and the evolution of lower mass stars. There is strong evidence that chromospheric activity of rapidly rotating young stars may be high enough to cause mass loss from atmospheres of potentially habitable planets. The removal of atmospheric water is most critical. Tidal breaking in binaries could help reduce magnetic dynamo action and thereby chromospheric activity in favour of life. We call this the Binary Habitability Mechanism (BHM) that we suggest allows for water retention at levels comparable to or better than the Earth. We discuss novel advantages that life may exploit, in these cases, and suggest that life may even thrive on some circumbinary planets. We find that while many binaries do not benefit from BHM, high-quality niches do exist for various combinations of stars between 0.55 and 1.0 solar masses. For a given pair of stellar masses, BHM operates only for certain combinations of period and eccentricity. Binaries having a solar-type primary seem to be quite well-suited niches having wide and distant habitable zones with plentiful water and sufficient light for photosynthetic life. We speculate that, as a direct result of BHM, conditions may be suitable for life on several planets and possibly even moons of giant planets orbiting some binaries. Lower mass combinations, while more restrictive in parameter space, provide niches lasting many billions of years and are rich suppliers of photosynthetic photons

    Experiences of assessment in data and security courses using personal response systems

    This paper details an experience report of two interventions which explored the use of a audience response system in summative assessment in two different ways within a conversion Masters degree programme. One course explored students understanding of topics and self-assessment of ability through small multiple-choice quizzes. The other course was based around cyber security and used the audience response system to ensure engagement with the pre-class reading material. Both interventions were designed in an attempt to encourage students to engage more effectively with the material. This paper aims to identify and contrast the ways in which the audience response system was used in assessment in higher education computing science with a view to suggesting key considerations for implementing such an intervention

    The National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C): Rationale, design, infrastructure, and deployment.

    OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses societal challenges that require expeditious data and knowledge sharing. Though organizational clinical data are abundant, these are largely inaccessible to outside researchers. Statistical, machine learning, and causal analyses are most successful with large-scale data beyond what is available in any given organization. Here, we introduce the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), an open science community focused on analyzing patient-level data from many centers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Clinical and Translational Science Award Program and scientific community created N3C to overcome technical, regulatory, policy, and governance barriers to sharing and harmonizing individual-level clinical data. We developed solutions to extract, aggregate, and harmonize data across organizations and data models, and created a secure data enclave to enable efficient, transparent, and reproducible collaborative analytics. RESULTS: Organized in inclusive workstreams, we created legal agreements and governance for organizations and researchers; data extraction scripts to identify and ingest positive, negative, and possible COVID-19 cases; a data quality assurance and harmonization pipeline to create a single harmonized dataset; population of the secure data enclave with data, machine learning, and statistical analytics tools; dissemination mechanisms; and a synthetic data pilot to democratize data access. CONCLUSIONS: The N3C has demonstrated that a multisite collaborative learning health network can overcome barriers to rapidly build a scalable infrastructure incorporating multiorganizational clinical data for COVID-19 analytics. We expect this effort to save lives by enabling rapid collaboration among clinicians, researchers, and data scientists to identify treatments and specialized care and thereby reduce the immediate and long-term impacts of COVID-19

    Border Insecurity: Reading Transnational Environments in Jim Lynch’s Border Songs

    This article applies an eco-critical approach to contemporary American fiction about the Canada-US border, examining Jim Lynch’s portrayal of the British Columbia-Washington borderlands in his 2009 novel Border Songs. It argues that studying transnational environmental actors in border texts—in this case, marijuana, human migrants, and migratory birds—helps illuminate the contingency of political boundaries, problems of scale, and discourses of risk and security in cross-border regions after 9/11. Further, it suggests that widening the analysis of trans-border activity to include environmental phenomena productively troubles concepts of nature and regional belonging in an era of climate change and economic globalization.     Productivity, Wages, and Marriage: The Case of Major League Baseball

    The effect of marriage on productivity and, consequently, wages has been long debated in economics. A primary explanation for the impact of marriage on wages has been through its impact on productivity, however, there has been no direct evidence for this. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by directly measuring the impact of marriage on productivity using a sample of professional baseball players from 1871 - 2007. Our results show that only lower ability men see an increase in productivity, though this result is sensitive to the empirical specification and weakly significant. In addition, despite the lack of any effect on productivity, high ability married players earn roughly 16 - 20 percent more than their single counterparts. We discuss possible reasons why employers may favor married men

    Association between Cannabis Use and Tinnitus in US Adults.

    OBJECTIVE: Assess the association between cannabis use and tinnitus in a nationally representative sample of US adults. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Population-based. PATIENTS: Adults aged 20 to 59 years who participated in 2011 to 2012 and 2015 to 2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) with available data on tinnitus, audiometry, and substance use. INTERVENTION: None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Tinnitus, demographic information, and medical history were obtained from NHANES questionnaires. Tinnitus was defined as bothersome tinnitus in the past year. Cannabis use was categorized as never use, low-volume use (1-2 pipes/joints per day), and high-volume use (3+ pipes/joints per day). Multivariable regression models with interaction and mediation analyses were conducted. Sampling weights were incorporated to yield results generalizable to the US population. RESULTS: Tinnitus prevalence was significantly higher among high-volume cannabis users (odds ratio [OR], 20.5%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 16.0-26.0%]) and low-volume users (OR, 17.0%; 95% CI, 14.3-20.0%) than nonusers (OR, 12.0%; 95% CI, 10.4-13.9%). High-volume cannabis use was significantly associated with tinnitus relative to nonusers in multivariable models adjusting for demographics, cardiovascular factors, hearing loss, noise exposure, and depression (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.1-3.9). Tinnitus severity was comparable among high volume, low volume, and noncannabis users. There was no significant mediation or interaction of depression affecting the association between cannabis use and tinnitus. CONCLUSIONS: Bothersome tinnitus prevalence was significantly higher among cannabis users relative to nonusers. High-volume cannabis use was independently associated with tinnitus in a multivariable model accounting for relevant factors including depression. Future study is warranted to elucidate the impact of various levels of cannabis use on tinnitus
