Low cost, small-scale charcoal production in the Western Cape

    Get PDF
Bibliography: leaves 94-96.Domestic grade charcoal with a fixed carbon content of at least 80 was successfully produced from the alien species Acacia Saligna. Carbonisation was effected using a Tongan drum kiln and average yields on a dry basis of 19.1 (excluding fines production) were attained. With fines included, the yield increased to 31.4 . It was shown that the earnings of woodcutters could increase by about 25 if they opted for charcoal production using this technology. Three kilns examined in the Western Cape proved to be more financially viable than the Tongan drum kiln. The Tongan kiln was however shown to have advantages over other technologies in charcoal production from invasive alien vegetation by unskilled labour

An assessment of high carbon stock and high conservation value approaches to sustainable oil palm cultivation in Gabon

Industrial-scale oil palm cultivation is rapidly expanding in Gabon, where it has the potential to drive economic growth, but also threatens forest, biodiversity and carbon resources. The Gabonese government is promoting an ambitious agricultural expansion strategy, while simultaneously committing to minimize negative environmental impacts of oil palm agriculture. This study estimates the extent and location of suitable land for oil palm cultivation in Gabon, based on an analysis of recent trends in plantation permitting. We use the resulting suitability map to evaluate two proposed approaches to minimizing negative environmental impacts: a High Carbon Stock (HCS) approach, which emphasizes forest protection and climate change mitigation, and a High Conservation Value (HCV) approach, which focuses on safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystems. We quantify the forest area, carbon stock, and biodiversity resources protected under each approach, using newly developed maps of priority species distributions and forest biomass for Gabon. We find 2.7–3.9 Mha of suitable or moderately suitable land that avoid HCS areas, 4.4 million hectares (Mha) that avoid HCV areas, and 1.2–1.7 Mha that avoid both. This suggests that Gabon's oil palm production target could likely be met without compromising important ecosystem services, if appropriate safeguards are put in place. Our analysis improves understanding of suitability for oil palm in Gabon, determines how conservation strategies align with national targets for oil palm production, and informs national land use planning

Standard Neutrino Spectrum from B-8 Decay

We present a systematic evaluation of the shape of the neutrino energy spectrum produced by beta-decay of 8^8B. We place special emphasis on determining the range of uncertainties permitted by existing laboratory data and theoretical ingredients (such as forbidden and radiative corrections). We review and compare the available experimental data on the 8^8B(β+)8(\beta^+){}^8Be(2α)(2\alpha) decay chain. We analyze the theoretical and experimental uncertainties quantitatively. We give a numerical representation of the best-fit (standard-model) neutrino spectrum, as well as two extreme deviations from the standard spectrum that represent the total (experimental and theoretical) effective ±3σ\pm3\sigma deviations. Solar neutrino experiments that are currently being developed will be able to measure the shape of the 8^8B neutrino spectrum above about 5 MeV. An observed distortion of the 8^8B solar neutrino spectrum outside the range given in the present work could be considered as evidence, at an effective significance level greater than three standard deviations, for physics beyond the standard electroweak model. We use the most recent available experimental data on the Gamow--Teller strengths in the A=37A=37 system to calculate the 8^8B neutrino absorption cross section on chlorine: σCl=(1.14±0.11)×1042\sigma_{\rm Cl}=(1.14\pm0.11)\times10^{-42}~cm2^2 (±3σ\pm3\sigma errors). The chlorine cross section is also given as a function of the neutrino energy. The 8^8B neutrino absorption cross section in gallium is σGa=(2.461.1+2.1)×1042\sigma_{\rm Ga}=(2.46^{+2.1}_{-1.1})\times10^{-42} cm2^2 (±3σ\pm3\sigma errors).Comment: Revised version, to appear in Phys. Developing a Global Community of Practice for Pharmacy Workforce Resilience—Meet GRiT

    Get PDF
From MDPI via Jisc Publications RouterHistory: accepted 2021-06-07, pub-electronic 2021-06-10Publication status: PublishedWorkforce resilience in pharmacy is required to ensure the practice, education, and administrative systems remain viable and sustainable over time and when facing challenges. Whether it is addressing burnout of pharmacists or students, or the structure and policies/procedures of employment and professional organizations, working to increase resilience across all individuals and sectors is essential to relieve pressure and promote better well-being, especially during the recent pandemic. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of a community of practice global group focused on development of resilience within the pharmacy workforce that is inclusive of students, pharmacy interns/preregistration and registered pharmacists. The steering group meets monthly and has representation of 24 members across eight countries. Members meet to discuss pertinent issues they are facing in practice, as well as to share and progress ideas on education, research, and practice initiatives. To date, members have collectively implemented resilience training in pharmacy education, researched burnout and resilience in both students and pharmacists, and facilitated international collaborations both within and outside core group members. Future activities will focus on strengthening the community of practice in order to harness the power of the collective
