    It is proved that the word problem of the direct product of two free groups of rank 2 can be recognised by a 2-tape real-time but not by a 1-tape real-time Turing machine. It is also proved that the Baumslag–Solitar groups B(1,r) have the 5-tape real-time word problem for all r != 0

    Groups with context-free co-word problem

    The class of co-context-free groups is studied. A co-context-free group is defined as one whose coword problem (the complement of its word problem) is context-free. This class is larger than the subclass of context-free groups, being closed under the taking of finite direct products, restricted standard wreath products with context-free top groups, and passing to finitely generated subgroups and finite index overgroups. No other examples of co-context-free groups are known. It is proved that the only examples amongst polycyclic groups or the Baumslag–Solitar groups are virtually abelian. This is done by proving that languages with certain purely arithmetical properties cannot be context-free; this result may be of independent interest

    We show that the abstract commensurator of Thompson's group F is composed of four building blocks: two isomorphism types of simple groups, the multiplicative group of the positive rationals and a cyclic group of order two.     Commensurations and Metric Properties of Houghton's Groups

    We describe the automorphism groups and the abstract commensurators of Houghton's groups. Then we give sharp estimates for the word metric of these groups and deduce that the commensurators embed into the corresponding quasi-isometry groups. As a further consequence, we obtain that the Houghton group on two rays is at least quadratically distorted in those with three or more rays

    Detailed study of dissipative quantum dynamics of K-2 attached to helium nanodroplets

    We thoroughly investigate vibrational quantum dynamics of dimers attached to He droplets motivated by recent measurements with K-2 [1]. For those femtosecond pump-probe experiments, crucial observed features are not reproduced by gas phase calculations but agreement is found using a description based on dissipative quantum dynamics, as briefly shown in [2]. Here we present a detailed study of the influence of possible effects induced by the droplet. The helium droplet causes electronic decoherence, shifts of potential surfaces, and relaxation of wave packets in attached dimers. Moreover, a realistic description of (stochastic) desorption of dimers off the droplet needs to be taken into account. Step by step we include and study the importance of these effects in our full quantum calculation. This allows us to reproduce and explain all major experimental findings. We find that desorption is fast and occurs already within 2-10 ps after electronic excitation. A further finding is that slow vibrational motion in the ground state can be considered frictionless.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    Bullying girls - Changes after brief strategic family therapy: A randomized, prospective, controlled trial with one-year follow-up

    Background: Many girls bully others. They are conspicuous because of their risk-taking behavior, increased anger, problematic interpersonal relationships and poor quality of life. Our aim was to determine the efficacy of brief strategic family therapy (BSFT) for bullying-related behavior, anger reduction, improvement of interpersonal relationships, and improvement of health-related quality of life in girls who bully, and to find out whether their expressive aggression correlates with their distinctive psychological features. Methods: 40 bullying girls were recruited from the general population: 20 were randomly selected for 3 months of BSFT. Follow-up took place 12 months after the therapy had ended. The results of treatment were examined using the Adolescents' Risk-taking Behavior Scale (ARBS), the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-D), and the SF-36 Health Survey (SF-36). Results: In comparison with the control group (CG) (according to the intent-to-treat principle), bullying behavior in the BSFT group was reduced (BSFT-G from n = 20 to n = 6; CG from n = 20 to n = 18, p = 0.05) and statistically significant changes in all risk-taking behaviors (ARBS), on most STAXI, IIP-D, and SF-36 scales were observed after BSFT. The reduction in expressive aggression (Anger-Out scale of the STAXI) correlated with the reduction on several scales of the ARBS, IIP-D, and SF-36. Follow-up a year later showed relatively stable events. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that bullying girls suffer from psychological and social problems which may be reduced by the use of BSFT. Expressive aggression in girls appears to correlate with several types of risk-taking behavior and interpersonal problems, as well as with health-related quality of life. Copyright (c) 2006 S.     Characteristics of graft-infiltrating lymphocytes after human heart transplantation: HLA mismatches and the cellular immune response within the transplanted heart

    The influence of HLA mismatches between donor and recipient on the phenotypes, function, and specificity of T-lymphocyte cultures derived from endomyocardial biopsies was studied in 118 heart transplant recipients. In case of HLA-DR mismatches, the majority of the EMB-derived cultures were dominated by CD4+ T cells while, in patients with HLA-A and -B mismatches but without DR mismatches, CD8+ T cells comprised the predominant T-cell subset. Cytotoxicity against donor antigens was observed in 75% of the cultures. A significantly (p < 0.005) lower proportion of the cultures showed cytotoxicity against HLA-A antigens (36%) when compared with HLA-B (53%) or HLA-DR (49%). An HLA-A2 mismatch elicited a cytotoxic response that was comparable to that found against HLA-B and -DR antigens: 62% of the cultures from HLA-A2 mismatched donor-recipient combinations was reactive against A2. A higher number of A, B, or DR mismatches resulted in a higher number of cytotoxic cultures directed against these antigens. A higher number of HLA-B and -DR mismatches was associated with a lower freedom from rejection. Our data indicate that, despite the use of adequate immunosuppressive therapy, the degree of HLA matching plays a crucial role in the immune response against a transplanted heart, resulting in a significant effect on freedom from rejection

    On the distortion of twin building lattices

    We show that twin building lattices are undistorted in their ambient group; equivalently, the orbit map of the lattice to the product of the associated twin buildings is a quasi-isometric embedding. As a consequence, we provide an estimate of the quasi-flat rank of these lattices, which implies that there are infinitely many quasi-isometry classes of finitely presented simple groups. In an appendix, we describe how non-distortion of lattices is related to the integrability of the structural cocycle
