CONCEIVING THE NEW IN AGNIESZKA CIESLINSKA’S FIGURATIO

The title FIGURATIO of Agnieszka Cieslinska’s 2014 exhibition at the Galeri Işık of the Işık University, Istanbul curated by Prof. Dr. Hasip PEKTAŞ, seems the most appropriate to describe her work as it crystallises her focus on the human figure and its transformations. Undoubtedly, the exhibition was the result of a consistent involvement; not only in the figurative art, but also in the thoughtful observation of the human figure and its metamorphosis. It is informed by Cieslinska’s belief that the human diversity, characteristics and features are fascinating basis for observation and for wandering in the areas of illusory memory full of evocations and references; where the boundaries between illusion and reality get blurred

Genetic diversity of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali' strains in Poland

During 2010-2013, samples from 267 apple trees growing in six regions of Poland were tested for phy- toplasma presence. ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma mali’ was detected in 17 samples from phloem tissue of apple shoots showing typical apple proliferation symptoms. Molecular characterization of these strains was conducted using PCR-RFLP and sequence analyses of three regions: ribosomal DNA, ribosomal protein and non-ribosomal DNA fragment including nitroreductase and rhodanese-like protein genes. Fragments of 16S rDNA plus 16S-23S spacer region from the ‘Ca. P. mali’ strains showed two restriction profiles: P-I and P-II when digested with HpaII enzyme. Moreover, based on results of nitroreductase and rhodanese-like protein genes, these phytoplasmas were grouped into two subtypes: AP-15 and AT-1. The majority of the ‘Ca. P. mali’ strains was classified to the AP-15 subtype. Two strains were grouped to the AT-1 subtype and another showed both AP-15 and AT-1 profiles. Based on results of analysis of rpl22 and rps3 ribosomal protein genes, most of the ‘Ca. P. mali’ strains were identified as belonging to rpX-A. Only one strain was affiliated to rpX-B subgroup

Distribution of Month of Birth of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder Differs from the General Population in the Netherlands

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) is causally dependent on genetic and environmental influences. We investigated whether autism spectrum disorders are associated with month of birth compared to the general population using a retrospective study, comparing ASD cases (n = 3478) with the general population (n = 2,716,876) born between 1995 and 2008. Associations were examined using χ2 tests and Walter and Elwood’s seasonality χ2 tests for the total ASD group, and separately for autistic disorder and Asperger syndrome. For the total ASD group, the distribution of month of birth was different compared to the general population (p < 0.0001), with July as the highest contributor, and a season-of-birth effect was found for this group (p = 0.02). For the autistic disorder group, the months of birth distribution were different (p = 0.01), with July as the highest contributor. No season-of-birth effect over the year was found (p = 0.09). No association was found for the months of birth of individuals with Asperger syndrome (p = 0.06), with no seasonal trend over the year (p = 0.60). In conclusion, a drop in sun exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy might explain the peak in July births and the associated risk for ASD development

DE-PASS Best Evidence Statement (BESt): Modifiable determinants of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in children and adolescents aged 5-19 years-a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Introduction Physical activity among children and adolescents remains insufficient, despite the substantial efforts made by researchers and policymakers. Identifying and furthering our understanding of potential modifiable determinants of physical activity behaviour (PAB) and sedentary behaviour (SB) is crucial for the development of interventions that promote a shift from SB to PAB. The current protocol details the process through which a series of systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses (MAs) will be conducted to produce a best-evidence statement (BESt) and inform policymakers. The overall aim is to identify modifiable determinants that are associated with changes in PAB and SB in children and adolescents (aged 5-19 years) and to quantify their effect on, or association with, PAB/SB. Methods and analysis A search will be performed in MEDLINE, SportDiscus, Web of Science, PsychINFO and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled trials (CTs) that investigate the effect of interventions on PAB/SB and longitudinal studies that investigate the associations between modifiable determinants and PAB/SB at multiple time points will be sought. Risk of bias assessments will be performed using adapted versions of Cochrane's RoB V.2.0 and ROBINS-I tools for RCTs and CTs, respectively, and an adapted version of the National Institute of Health's tool for longitudinal studies. Data will be synthesised narratively and, where possible, MAs will be performed using frequentist and Bayesian statistics. Modifiable determinants will be discussed considering the settings in which they were investigated and the PAB/SB measurement methods used. Ethics and dissemination No ethical approval is needed as no primary data will be collected. The findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and academic conferences where possible. The BESt will also be shared with policy makers within the DE-PASS consortium in the first instance. Systematic review registration CRD42021282874

GERMANY CLOSE AND DISTANT IN THE LIGHT OF MIGRATION EXPERIENCES OF INHABITANTS OF NORTH-EASTERN POLAND (Niemcy bliskie i dalekie w swietle doswiadczen emigracyjnych mieszkanców pólnocno-wschodniej Polski)

In my article I present characteristics of emigration to Germany in the light of biographical and autobiographical migration stories collected after the year 2004. The analysis of biographical materials is preceded by the review of press materials (including letters from readers about migration experiences in Germany) and statistical data concerning main emigration directions from Poland and from Podlaskie voivodeship. The aim of this article is a presentation of a specific character of German direction of labor migration through individual experiences of particular migrants, men and women. The analysis of those cases shows that emigration to Germany, although close in a geographical sense, is not always close in the sociological, psychological and cultural sense, because it demands substantial adaptation to the German society and a change of the lifestyle. Therefore, emigration to Germany more frequently (in comparison to other migration directions) represents the innovative type (according to William Petersen's classification)

Body conformation and morphometry of some internal organs of Pharaoh quail of different ages

The effect of age of Pharaoh quail on body weight, body conformation and development of internal organs, including the digestive tract, was determined. At the age of 35 days, Pharaoh quail were characterized by significantly lower body weight, length of trunk with neck, and length of trunk compared to 45-day-old birds. Younger quail had slightly shorter breast bone and lower thighs, smaller chest girth, and the same length of shanks. Body conformation indices were significantly (P?0.05) higher in 35-day-old birds. Pharaoh quail, evaluated at 35 and 45 days of age, did not differ significantly in the length of the oesophagus and crop, the length of intestine and its segments, and the weight and proportion of gizzard, proventriculus and heart. As birds aged, liver weight increased significantly, as did the weight and proportion of testicles in males
