Nuri İyem’in “Nalbant” Eserinin Erwin Panofsky’nin İkonografik ve İkonolojik Eleştiri Yöntemiyle Analizi

    Get PDF

Iconographic and Iconological Criticism of Nuri İyem's "Blacksmith" by Erwin Panofsky

    Get PDF
One of the 20th century's leading artists of Turkish painting, Nuri İyem draws attention as a painter with a strong figurative expression who adopts social realism in his works. He is known for his works that reflect Anatolian people, especially women and laborers, in a simple yet profound way. In this study, the artist's work "Blacksmith", which focuses on rural life and labor, is analyzed based on the "Iconographic and Iconological Method of Art Criticism" developed by the German art historian Erwin Panofsky.Panofsky's method proposes a three-stage examination in making sense of works of art: preliminary iconographic description, iconographic analysis, and iconological interpretation. With this approach, elements such as the figure's posture, clothing, and working space in "Blacksmith" are first described; then the meanings of these elements in the historical and cultural context are interpreted. In the final stage, the underlying worldview, social, and intellectual structure of the work is analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it is seen that İyem presents a multi-layered narrative symbolizing the concepts of labor, production, and identity through an artisan figure in "Blacksmith". In this context, Panofsky's method has been an effective tool in making sense of the deep structure of the work and has once again demonstrated that art is a form of intellectual expression

    Get PDF
RUBRICS AND RUBICON OF ACTIVISM AND ADVOCACY - POETRY OF ALIENATION - THEMES AND MOTIFS article, examines the transformative role of poetry as a conduit for activism and advocacy, with a particular emphasis on themes of alienation. It aligns with the theme "Loneliness and Isolation in Literature" from the DOĞUŞ UNIVERSITY, DİDE 2023 Conference, drawing a comparative analysis between T.S. Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Uzma Kauser's My Mother's Personal Beliefs. The discussion foregrounds how poetry amplifies the voices of marginalised communities, engaging with broader socio-political discourses on inequality and identity. The article elucidates how poetry serves as a personal and collective medium for confronting societal issues by analysing linguistic devices and poetic techniques in Eliot’s modernist lens and Kauser’s exploration of generational and religious identity. The study advocates for continued engagement with literature’s capacity to inspire social transformation and intergenerational dialogue

The Politics of Representation: Comparative Biographical Analyses of Lilie Chouliaraki, Judith Butler, and Zoë Wicomb in Media, Humanitarianism, and War

    Get PDF
Representation in media, literature, and war discourse plays a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions of suffering, victimhood, and agency. This study undertakes a comparative biographical analysis of Lilie Chouliaraki, Judith Butler, and Zoë Wicomb, examining how their works interrogate power, discourse, and suffering within the contexts of grievability, humanitarianism, post-humanitarianism, and mediatisation. Employing a qualitative discourse analysis and drawing on Chouliaraki’s theorisation of post-humanitarianism, Butler’s concept of grievability, and Wicomb’s interrogation of racial and gender identity in post-apartheid South Africa, the study explores the selective visibility of suffering. Integrating insights from Chouliaraki and Orgad’s work on proper distance in media ethics, Chouliaraki and Zaborowski’s analysis of the refugee crisis, and Chouliaraki’s vision of a cosmopolitan public, this article critically evaluates how media, literature, and philosophy construct narratives of suffering. The findings underscore the hierarchical structuring of voice and the systematic exclusion of certain subjects from public discourse, reinforcing dominant power structures
