Two patients with the Brachmann-De Lange syndrome are described. The condition is not uncommon and is characterised by mental retardation, a distinctive facies, synophrys of the eyebrows, a thin down-turned upper lip, hirsutism, growth failure and variable abnormalities of the extremities. The cause of the syndrome has not been identified.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 919 (1974)

Radioisotopic purity and imaging properties of cyclotron-produced 99mTc using direct 100Mo(p,2n) reaction

Evaluation of the radioisotopic purity of technetium-99m (99mTc) produced in GBq amounts by proton bombardment of enriched molibdenum-100 (100Mo) metallic targets at low proton energies (i.e. within 15–20 MeV) is conducted. This energy range was chosen since it is easily achievable by many conventional medical cyclotrons already available in the nuclear medicine departments of hospitals. The main motivation for such a study is in the framework of the research activities at the international level that have been conducted over the last few years to develop alternative production routes for the most widespread radioisotope used in medical imaging. The analysis of technetium isotopes and isomeric states (9xTc) present in the pertechnetate saline Na99mTcO4 solutions, obtained after the extraction/purification procedure, reveals radionuclidic purity levels basically in compliance with the limits recently issued by European Pharmacopoeia 9.3 (2018 Sodium pertechnetate (99mTc) injection 4801–3). Moreover, the impact of 9xTc contaminant nuclides on the final image quality is thoroughly evaluated, analyzing the emitted high-energy gamma rays and their influence on the image quality. The spatial resolution of images from cyclotron-produced 99mTc acquired with a mini-gamma camera was determined and compared with that obtained using technetium-99m solutions eluted from standard 99Mo/99mTc generators. The effect of the increased image background contribution due to Compton-scattered higher-energy gamma rays (E \u3b3   >  200 keV), which could cause image-contrast deterioration, was also studied. It is concluded that, due to the high radionuclidic purity of cyclotron-produced 99mTc using 100Mo(p,2n)99mTc reaction at a proton beam energy in the range 15.7–19.4 MeV, the resulting image properties are well comparable with those from the generator-eluted 99mTc

Diagnostic lung punctures were done with parental consent in 29 previously untreated children aged 2 months to 9 years (median age 16 months), with radiologically proved broncho- or lobar pneumonia. Radiological examination was repeated after the procedure. Positive bacteriological cultures were obtained in 5 cases (17,2%): H. influenzae (2), a-haemolytic streptococci (2), and D. pneumoniae (1). Six patients (20,7%) developed overt pneumothorax and 1 had haemoptysis. All 7 patients recovered completely. Pneumothorax occurred in 5 of the 6 patients during the first 19 aspirations carried out by 6 different operators, while no local anaesthesia was used. The subsequent 11 punctures, among which only one case of pneumothorax occurred, were done by one person only after infiltration of the site with local anaesthetic. The incidence of pneumothorax seems to relate to the experience and skill of the operator, possibly to the use of local anaesthetic, and most important, whether identified by means of routine radiological examination after the procedure. Lung puncture does not appear to be an invariably innocuous procedure and should probably be reserved for special cases where uncommon aetiological agents are anticipated, for instance intractable pneumonitis accompanying immunodeficiency disease, the use of immunosuppressives, or with malignancy.S.

From “Whither” to “Whence”: A Decolonial Reading of Malabou

Get PDF
A turn from the “whither” to the “whence” of anarchism is at stake in Catherine Malabou’s interpretation of Latin American decolonial theory. This is a turn from a materialist philosophy that seeks to open the space of anarchism within the modern state toward one that discerns anarchism as already operative in the modern state given the social implications of colonial legacies. In tracing this turn, I propose a development of Malabou’s work insofar as I put her in dialogue with María Lugones, who is much closer to Malabou than the more canonical decolonial figures she actively engages, especially in view of anarchism as a form of social–political plasticity. Understanding Lugones’ critique of earlier iterations of decolonial theory helps make explicit an immanent anarchic resistance to domination as an explosive inhabitation of everyday loci of tension
