Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome in pregnancy: a case of favorable mother - fetal outcome in a well-controlled disease

Get PDF
The autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome(ALPS)is a disorder of abnormal lymphocyte survival caused by the dysregulation of theFasapoptotic pathway. The Fas geneis expressed at the maternal–fetal interface and is involved in the regulation of immune response and implantation. Altered Fas expression may result in altered apoptosis and, ultimately, affect both the immune response and implantation; it is in fact associated with recurrent pregnancy loss, preterm premature rupture of membranes and pre-eclampsia. Currently, there are over 500 cases of ALPS reported worldwide from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. Up to date, the published work contains no specific reports on pregnancy outcome in women affected by ALPS. We present a case of full-term uneventful pregnancy in a patient affected by ALPS. A specific clinical follow-up in a pregnant woman with primary immunologic disease is suggested

Anthelmintic efficacy of tinidazole against the progression of Toxocara canis larvae to the brain in mice

Get PDF
The anthelmintic effect of tinidazole (100 mg/kg per day for 3 successive days) was tested in male Swiss CF-1 mice infected with second-stage Toxocara canis larvae at challenge doses of 250, 500, 1000, and 1500 embryonated eggs per mouse. The drug was given orally on days 3–5 postinfection (p.i.) to one-half of the animals, and all mice were killed on day 40 p.i. The number of larvae recovered from each mouse's brain and skeletal muscle was then scored in both groups. Tinidazole yielded a highly significant reduction in the total recovery of larvae from the test animals' brains at the second and third inoculum levels but no statistically significant reduction at the highest larval dose as compared with the values obtained in the untreated control animals.Facultad de Ciencias Médica

Effect of Saprotrophic Soil Fungi on Toxocara canis Eggs

The purpose of this work was to assess the ovicidal activity of Chrysosporium merdarium, Trichoderma harzianum, Fusarium oxysporum, F. moniliforme and F. sulphureum isolated from public areas in the city of La Plata, Argentina, on Toxocara canis eggs in vitro. Each species were cultured on water agar 2% with a suspension of immature-stage T. canis eggs. At 4, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days post-culture, they were observed by light and scanning electron microscopy. One hundred eggs were evaluated and scored according to Lỳsek’s ovicidal effect classification. These procedures were repeated three times which each fungal species. Chrysosporium merdarium and F. oxysporum showed very high ovicidal activity, F. sulphureum high ovicidal activity, F. moniliforme intermediate ovicidal activity and T. harzianum did not affect the viability of T. canis eggs. Taking into account the effects on human and animal health and the environment, the species with better prospects for studying its potential use as biological control was F. sulphureum

Biological activity of Paecilomyces genus against Toxocara canis eggs

Saprophytic soil fungi can exert ovicidal and ovistatic effects on helminths with differing degrees of efficiency. The representatives of such fungi from temperate regions, Paecilomyces lilacinus (Thom) Samson and P. marquandii (Masse) Hughes, exhibit recognized ovicidal activity on some nematodes. We evaluated the action in vitro of P. lilacinus and P. marquandii on the zoonotic canine roundworm eggs of Toxocara canis. Eggs exposed and unexposed to fungal samples were observed by both light and scanning electron microscopy on days 4, 7 and 14 post-inoculation. Ovicidal activity of P. lilacinus on T. canis eggs was considered to be high and that of P. marquandii to be intermediate.Facultad de Ciencias MédicasFacultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Análisis de 12 casos de niños con helmintiosis y eosinofilia

Get PDF

Comparison of preparation techniques of mixed samples (fungi–helminth eggs) for scanning electron microscopy by critical point drying

Get PDF
We compared three preparation techniques for critical point drying of fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus (Thom) Samson with Toxocara canis (Werner) Johnston and Taenia hydatigena Linneo eggs by scanning electron microscopy. We evaluated filtration (first), centrifugation (second), and phytoplankton network (third) in critical point drying methods. The first and third methods were advantageous for T. canis eggs because they preserved the quantity and quality of samples to obtain better images definition. The best technique for T. hydatigena eggs was the addition of phytoplankton network in critical point drying which preserved these helminth eggs.
