    Students' perceptions of a reporting and feedback system for learning and development in an 'inviting school' in Hong Kong

    This small-scale study aimed to explore how the reporting and feedback system in an inviting school in Hong Kong attempts to facilitate students' learning and development. In particular, the study examined how students in an inviting setting felt about the reporting system in relation to their own learning and development. Any associations between feedback given to students and their subsequent development of greater self-regulation were considered. Data were generated from individual and focus group interviews with a small sample of Grade 7 and Grade 10 students. The results revealed four key aspects of the school context that students regarded as helpful to facilitate the function of the reporting system. The potential relationship between feedback and reflection, and the roles these play in the acquisition of self-regulation in students, are discussed. © 2012 Copyright NAPCE.postprin

    Factors influencing school connectedness: Chinese adolescents' perspectives

    This study explored the concept of school connectedness and the factors that may influence its development with a sample of Chinese adolescents. Six focus groups involving 52 high school students were conducted using a set of predetermined discussion topics. Results indicated that the students fully understood the notion of school connectedness and could identify a number of key influences affecting its development. These factors could be grouped under several domains including teacher care, peer relations, broader school relationships, school disciplinary policies and practices, activities within the school's guidance and counseling program, and opportunities for talent development. The students were also able to suggest practical strategies that schools might introduce to enhance and strengthen students' acquisition of connectedness to school.     This study explored Chinese adolescents' perceptions of their own life skills development and the importance they place on such skills. The study also investigated the within-school and outsideschool influences that may help develop and enhance life skills development. Six focus groups involving 52 high school students were conducted, using a set of predetermined discussion topics. Results revealed students' awareness of many salient life skills, including those related directly to academic development, 'learning to learn', personal and social growth, and future career planning. The students were also able to suggest practical strategies that schools might use to further enhance students' life skills development. Contextual factors influencing the development of life skills appear to include not only experiences within the school curriculum and the guidance and counseling program, but also talent development opportunities, and family and peer relationships.     Cyclic deformation characteristics of S355 and S690 steels under different loading protocols

    Despite of excellent high strength to self-weight ratios of the S690 steels, when compared with the S355 steels, there is a widespread concern regarding the ductility of the S690 steels. It is generally considered that the ductility of the S690 steels is significantly lower than that of the S355 steels – this is the general understandings the authors attempt to investigate. This paper presents an experimental investigation into cyclic deformation characteristics of both S355 and S690 steels through low-cycle high-strain cyclic tests with two different loading protocols. A detailed account of the results of 32 cyclic tests on both the S355 and the S690 funnel-shaped coupons is presented. Effects of four different target strains and two different loading frequencies are also examined in details. For the ranges of loading protocols, strain amplitudes, and frequencies considered, the hysteretic responses of these coupons of the two steels are compared directly in terms of engineering stress–strain curves based on their nominal diameters. Microstructures of the fractured coupons of the two steels are also identified for comparison. Contrary to the general understandings, it is demonstrated that the high strength S690 steels do have a good ductility under both monotonic and cyclic actions. Moreover, depending on specific loading protocols and target strains, the cyclic deformation characteristics of the S690 steels are demonstrated to be superior to those of the S355 steels in terms of the number of cycles completed prior to failure and their corresponding energy dissipation characteristic under various target strains up to ±10.0%. The findings of this experimental investigation highlight the importance of establishing ductility requirements and cyclic deformation characteristics for the high strength S690 steels in accordance with specifically designed cyclic tests rather than relying solely on conventional monotonic tensile tests

    A Novel Technology to Develop a Nickel-Enriched Layer on Slab Surface by Utilizing NiO-Containing Synthetic Powder

    Cu, as one of the typical tramp elements, is known to cause hot shortness during reheating of slabs followed by hot rolling of sheet products. In order to prevent such harmful aspects, a new idea is proposed by using synthetic powders containing NiO in the mold flux during continuous casting of the slab. During the casting, NiO is reduced and absorbed on initial solidified steel shell, and a Ni-rich layer is developed near the surface region of the slab. According to the proposed idea, it is expected that both the Cu solubility and the melting temperature of Cu-segregated region would increase considerably by virtue of Ni-rich layer, which is believed to play an important role to prevent the Cu hot shortness. A series of laboratory-scale experiments were carried out in order to confirm the reduction and the absorption of Ni into the steel matrix. It was observed by SEM-EDS and FE-EPMA that a Ni-enriched layer, as thick as a few hundred mu m, formed near the surface of the slab. Also, a number of laboratory-scale heat treatment tests under oxidizing atmosphere showed that the samples with the Ni-enriched layer had a decreased Cu enrichment at the interface between scale and steel, compared to a case without Ni-rich layer. A pilot-plant-scale steel slab (medium carbon steel containing 0.3 wt pct Cu) was obtained in a continuous casting process with the NiO-containing mold flux, and a Ni-enriched layer was also observed. It was concluded that the use of NiO in the mold flux is a promising new approach for suppressing the hot shortness of Cu-containing steel, without an expensive addition of Ni to the whole steel matrix.open110Nsciescopu

    SUMO-Specific Protease 2 (SENP2) Is an Important Regulator of Fatty Acid Metabolism in Skeletal Muscle

    Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO)-specific proteases (SENPs) that reverse protein modification by SUMO are involved in the control of numerous cellular processes, including transcription, cell division, and cancer development. However, the physiological function of SENPs in energy metabolism remains unclear. Here, we investigated the role of SENP2 in fatty acid metabolism in C2C12 myotubes and in vivo. In C2C12 myotubes, treatment with saturated fatty acids, like palmitate, led to nuclear factor-B-mediated increase in the expression of SENP2. This increase promoted the recruitment of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) and PPAR, through desumoylation of PPARs, to the promoters of the genes involved in fatty acid oxidation (FAO), such as carnitine-palmitoyl transferase-1 (CPT1b) and long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase 1 (ACSL1). In addition, SENP2 overexpression substantially increased FAO in C2C12 myotubes. Consistent with the cell culture system, muscle-specific SENP2 overexpression led to a marked increase in the mRNA levels of CPT1b and ACSL1 and thereby in FAO in the skeletal muscle, which ultimately alleviated high-fat diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance. Collectively, these data identify SENP2 as an important regulator of fatty acid metabolism in skeletal muscle and further implicate that muscle SENP2 could be a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of obesity-linked metabolic disorders.11116Ysciescopu

    Maintaining extensivity in evolutionary multiplex networks

    In this paper, we explore the role of network topology on maintaining the extensive property of entropy. We study analytically and numerically how the topology contributes to maintaining extensivity of entropy in multiplex networks, i.e. networks of subnetworks (layers), by means of the sum of the positive Lyapunov exponents, HKS, a quantity related to entropy. We show that extensivity relies not only on the interplay between the coupling strengths of the dynamics associated to the intra (short-range) and inter (long-range) interactions, but also on the sum of the intra-degrees of the nodes of the layers. For the analytically treated networks of size N, among several other results, we show that if the sum of the intra-degrees (and the sum of inter-degrees) scales as N?+1, ? > 0, extensivity can be maintained if the intra-coupling (and the inter-coupling) strength scales as N??, when evolution is driven by the maximisation of HKS. We then verify our analytical results by performing numerical simulations in multiplex networks formed by electrically and chemically coupled neurons
