    Particular solutions of singularly perturbed partial differential equations with constant coefficients in rectangular domains, Part I. Convergence analysis

    AbstractThe technique of separation of variables is used to derive explicit particular solutions for constant coefficient, singularly perturbed partial differential equations (PDEs) on a rectangular domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Particular solutions and exact solutions in closed form are obtained. An analysis of convergence for the series solutions is performed, which is useful in numerical solution of singularly perturbed differential equations for moderately small values of ε (e.g., ε=0.1–10−4). Two computational models are designed deliberately: Model I with waterfalls solutions and Model II with wedding-gauze solutions. Model II is valid for very small ε (e.g., ε=10−7), but Model I for a moderately small ε(=0.1–10−4). The investigation contains two parts. The first part, reported in the present paper, focuses on the convergence analysis and some preliminary numerical experiments for both of the models, while the second part, to be reported in a forthcoming paper, will illustrate the solutions near the boundary layers

Thirty-seven healthy athletes was recruited and randomly divided into three groups: Elastic tension 0% (N = 13), 10% (N = 12), and 20% (N = 12).     EBV-positive Hodgkin lymphoma is associated with suppression of p21cip1/waf1 and a worse prognosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>About 30-50% of Hodgkin lymphomas (HLs) harbor the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but the impact of EBV infection on clinical outcomes has been unclear. EBV-encoded small RNAs (<it>EBER</it>s) are presented in all EBV-infected cells, but their functions are still less understood.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>EBER1 </it>was transfected into two HL cell lines, KMH2 and L428, and microarrays were used to screen for <it>EBER1</it>-induced changes. We found that <it>EBER1 </it>suppressed <it>p21</it><sup>cip1/waf1 </sup>transcription in HL cell lines. In addition, positive regulators of <it>p21</it><sup>cip1/waf1 </sup>transcription, such as p53, EGR1, and STAT1, were decreased. Suppression of <it>p21</it><sup>cip1/waf1 </sup>in the <it>EBER1</it><sup>+ </sup>HL cell lines was associated with increased resistance to histone deacetylase inhibitors or proteasome inhibitors, drugs known to cause apoptosis by increasing p21<sup>cip1/waf1 </sup>levels. On biopsy specimens, EBV<sup>+ </sup>HLs had weaker expression of both p21<sup>cip1/waf1 </sup>and active caspase 3. Clinically, suppression of p21<sup>cip1/waf1 </sup>in EBV<sup>+ </sup>HLs was associated with a worse 2-year disease-free survival rate (45% for EBV<sup>+ </sup>HLs <it>vs</it>. 77% for EBV<sup>- </sup>HLs, <it>p </it>= 0.002).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although the underlying mechanisms are still relatively unclear, <it>EBER1 </it>inhibits <it>p21</it><sup>cip1/waf1 </sup>transcription and prevents apoptosis through down-regulation of p53, EGR1, and STAT1. The anti-apoptotic activity of <it>EBER1 </it>may be important in the rescue of Reed-Sternberg cells from drug-induced apoptosis and in the clinical behaviors of EBV<sup>+ </sup>HLs.</p

    Observational connection of non-thermal X-ray emission from pulsars with their timing properties and thermal emission

    The origin and radiation mechanisms of high energy emissions from pulsars have remained mysterious since their discovery. Here we report, based on a sample of 68 pulsars, observational connection of non-thermal X-ray emissions from pulsars with their timing properties and thermal emissions, which may provide some constraints on theoretical modeling. Besides strong correlations with the spin-down power E˙\dot{E} and the magnetic field strength at the light cylinder BlcB_{\rm lc}, the non-thermal X-ray luminosity in 0.5 - 8 keV, LpL_{\rm p}, represented by the power-law component in the spectral model, is found to be strongly correlated with the highest possible electric field strength in the polar gap, EpcE_{\rm pc}, of the pulsar. The spectral power index Γp\Gamma_{\rm p} of that power-law component is also found, for the first time in the literature, to strongly correlate with E˙\dot{E}, BlcB_{\rm lc} and EpcE_{\rm pc}, thanks to the large sample. In addition, we found that LpL_{\rm p} can be well described by LpT5.96±0.64R2.24±0.18L_{\rm p}\propto T^{5.96\pm 0.64}R^{2.24\pm 0.18}, where TT and RR are the surface temperature and the emitting-region radius of the surface thermal emission, represented by the black-body component in the spectral model. Γp\Gamma_{\rm p}, on the other hand, can be well described only when timing variables are included, and the relation is Γp=log(T5.8±1.93R2.29±0.85P1.19±0.88P˙0.94±0.44)\Gamma_{\rm p} = \log(T^{-5.8\pm 1.93}R^{-2.29\pm 0.85}P^{-1.19\pm 0.88}\dot{P}^{0.94\pm 0.44}) plus a constant. These relations strongly suggest the existence of connections between surface thermal emission and electron-positron pair production in pulsar magnetospheres.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRA

    Serum repressing efflux pump CDR1 in Candida albicans

    BACKGROUND: In the past decades, the prevalence of candidemia has increased significantly and drug resistance has also become a pressing problem. Overexpression of CDR1, an efflux pump, has been proposed as a major mechanism contributing to the drug resistance in Candida albicans. It has been demonstrated that biological fluids such as human serum can have profound effects on antifungal pharmacodynamics. The aim of this study is to understand the effects of serum in drug susceptibility via monitoring the activity of CDR1 promoter of C. albicans. RESULTS: The wild-type C. albicans cells (SC5314) but not the cdr1/cdr1 mutant cells became more susceptible to the antifungal drug when the medium contained serum. To understand the regulation of CDR1 in the presence of serum, we have constructed CDR1 promoter-Renilla luciferase (CDR1p-RLUC) reporter to monitor the activity of the CDR1 promoter in C. albicans. As expected, the expression of CDR1p-RLUC was induced by miconazole. Surprisingly, it was repressed by serum. Consistently, the level of CDR1 mRNA was also reduced in the presence of serum but not N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, a known inducer for germ tube formation. CONCLUSION: Our finding that the expression of CDR1 is repressed by serum raises the question as to how does CDR1 contribute to the drug resistance in C. albicans causing candidemia. This also suggests that it is important to re-assess the prediction of in vivo therapeutic outcome of candidemia based on the results of standard in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing, conducted in the absence of serum

    Effects of HIP Treatment on the Microstructure of Cr50-Si50 Target

    Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) is a process that uniquely combines higher pressure and temperature to produce materials and parts with substantially better properties than those fabricated by other methods. Commercial as-hp (hot pressing) treated Cr50-Si50 targets are used throughout this study. The aim of this paper is to discuss the methods and to find a suitable HIP treatment for the as-hp treated Cr50-Si50 target. Otherwise, we also to find the effects of microstructure on the mechanical properties of HIP treated Cr50-Si50 target. To evaluate the effects on microstructure and properties of the Cr50-Si50 target by HIP process, SEM, TEM and porosity, density inspections were performed. The experiment results show that HIP treatment at 1373 K under the pressure of 175 MPa and 4 hours for Cr50-Si50 target is the optimum condition. In this study, HIP treatment reduced the porosity of the target about 60%

    Insights on Distinct Left Atrial Remodeling Between Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

    BACKGROUND: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) commonly coexist with overlapping pathophysiology like left atrial (LA) remodeling, which might differ given different underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the different patterns of LA wall remodeling in AF vs. HFpEF. METHODS: We compared LA wall characteristics including wall volume (LAWV), wall thickness (LAWT), and wall thickness heterogeneity (LAWT[SD]) and LA structure, function among the controls (without AF or HFpEF, n = 115), HFpEF alone (n = 59), AF alone (n = 37), and HFpEF+AF (n = 38) groups using multi-detector computed tomography and echocardiography. RESULTS: LA wall remodeling was most predominant and peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) was worst in HFpEF+AF patients as compared to the rest. Despite lower E/e' (9.8 ± 3.8 vs. 13.4 ± 6.4) yet comparable LA volume, LAWT and PALS in AF alone vs. HFpEF alone, LAWV [12.6 (11.6–15.3) vs. 12.0 (10.2–13.7); p = 0.01] and LAWT(SD) [0.68 (0.61–0.71) vs. 0.60 (0.56–0.65); p < 0.001] were significantly greater in AF alone vs. HFpEF alone even after multi-variate adjustment and propensity matching. After excluding the HFpEF+AF group, both LAWV and LAWT [SD] provided incremental values when added to PALS or LAVi (all p for net reclassification improvement <0.05) in discriminating AF alone, with LAWT[SD] yielding the largest C-statistic (0.78, 95% CI: 0.70–0.86) among all LA wall indices. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a similar extent of LA enlargement and dysfunction in HFpEF vs. AF alone, larger LAWV and LAWT [SD] can distinguish AF from HFpEF alone, suggesting the distinct underlying pathophysiological mechanism of LA remodeling in AF vs. HFpEF
