The data show that the initiation of EAWM in the Philippine Sea strongly connects to the southern lobe variability of the NPO in January followed by a basin-scale oceanic Victoria mode pattern. No apparent connection was found for the northern lobe of the NPO when the ENSO signals are removed. The strengthening of the EAWM in November interacts with the Kuroshio front and generates a low-level heating source in the Philippine Sea. Significant Rossby wave sources are then formed in the lower to midtroposphere. Wave ray tracing analyses confirm the atmospheric teleconnection established by the Rossby wave propagation in the mid- to upper troposphere. Analyses of the origin of wave trajectories from the Philippine Sea show a clear eastward propagating pathway that affects the southern lobe of the NPO from the southern lobe of the western Pacific pattern at 500 hPa and above on the time scale of 20 days. No ray trajectories from the lower troposphere can propagate eastward to influence the central-eastern subtropical Pacific. The wave propagation process is further supported by the coupled model experiments. We thank three anonymous reviewers for their constructive comments that have helped to improve the clarity of the presentation. BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of 2007, the National Health Research Institutes has been promoting the dissemination of evidence-based medicine (EBM). The current study examined longitudinal trends of behaviors in how hospital-based physicians and nurses have searched for medical information during the spread of EBM. METHODS: Cross-sectional postal questionnaire surveys were conducted in nationally representative regional hospitals of Taiwan thrice in 2007, 2009, and 2011. Demographic data were gathered concerning gender, age, working experience, teaching appointment, academic degree, and administrative position. Linear and logistic regression models were used to examine predictors and changes over time. RESULTS: Data from physicians and nurses were collected in 2007 (n = 1156), 2009 (n = 2975), and 2011 (n = 3999). There were significant increases in the use of four Internet-based resources – Web portals, online databases, electronic journals, and electronic books – across the three survey years among physicians and nurses (p < 0.001). Access to textbooks and printed journals, however, did not change over the 4-year study period. In addition, there were significant relationships between the usage of Internet-based resources and users’ characteristics. Age and faculty position were important predictors in relation to the usage among physicians and nurses, while academic degree served as a critical factor among nurses only. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians and nurses used a variety of sources to look for medical information. There was a steady increase in use of Internet-based resources during the diffusion period of EBM. The findings highlight the importance of the Internet as a prominent source of medical information for main healthcare professionals

Trends in epidemiology of hyperglycemia in pregnancy in Taiwan, 2008-2017

BackgroundHyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP) increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The increasing prevalence of overweight or obesity and the increasing proportion of pregnant women with advanced maternal age (AMA) in the recent decade may affect its prevalence. We analyzed the secular trend of HIP prevalence in 2008-2017 in Taiwan and investigated the impact of AMA in this study.MethodsThis cross-sectional study used data from Health and Welfare Data Science Center. Pregnant women who registered their data in the Birth Certificate Application in 2008-2017 were recruited. Diagnosis of HIP was defined by ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes.ResultsIn 2008-2017, 151,306-211,768 pregnant women were recruited in different years. The proportion of women with AMA increased from 15.8% to 32.1%. Meanwhile, the prevalence increased from 0.5% to 0.9% for preexisting diabetes, 0.2% to 0.4% for undiagnosed diabetes, and 11.4% to 14.5% for GDM. Maternal age was significantly associated with the prevalence of HIP. For women aged <30 years, 30-34 years and ≥35 years, the prevalence of preexisting diabetes were 0.51%, 0.75% and 1.24%, respectively (p<0.05); the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes were 0.18%, 0.24% and 0.37%, respectively (p<0.05); and the prevalence of GDM were 10.57%, 14.77% and 18.13%, respectively (p<0.05). In all age groups, the prevalence of HIP increased over time in 2008-2017.ConclusionThe prevalence of HIP increased in Taiwan in 2008-2017, which may result from the increasing proportion of pregnant women with AMA and the change in the diagnostic criteria for GDM

Back-Side Wafer Grinding Quality Affecting Back-End Assembly Process for LCD Driver ICs

ABSTRACT Die size and thickness of IC substrate typically vary as a result of the various market demands while the semiconductor process and the product applications develop fast. In order to satisfy the market concerns, the improvement of wafer grinding and dicing saw technology is necessary to provide lighter, thinner and more reliable ICs. Generally, most of previous commercial ICs almost demonstrate the square profile, but some special applications such as liquid-crystaldisplay (LCD) driver ICs request approximate rectangle shape. Furthermore, the ratios of length / width of these drivers are near 14:1, therefore, it is easy to be broken during IC assembly process and induce some reliability defects. However, the growth rate of digital panel displays is gradually increased. This global market is more and more impressed. In this study, how to promote the die strength and investigate the wafer grinding process for the previous LCD products is the main target. Through the analysis of data collection in die sizes, the suitable wafer grinding process is recommended in assembly line and some predictable trends for future panel IC applications are also exposed

Expression of PRDX6 Correlates with Migration and Invasiveness of Colorectal Cancer Cells

Background/Aims: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. PRDXs are antioxidant enzymes that play an important role in cell differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis and have diverse functions in malignancy development. However, the mechanism of aberrant overexpression of PRDX6 in CRC remains unclear. Methods: Boyden chamber assay, flow cytometry and a lentiviral shRNA targeting PRDX6 and transient transfection with pCMV-6-PRDX6 plasmid were used to examine the role of PRDX6 in the proliferation capacity and invasiveness of CRC cells. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) with tissue array containing 40 paraffin- embedded CRC tissue specimens and Western blot assays were used to detect target proteins. Results: PRDX6 was significantly up-expressed in different comparisons of metastasis of colorectal adenomas in node-positive CRC (P = 0.03). In in vitro HCT-116, PRDX6 silencing markedly suppressed CRC cell migration and invasiveness while also inducing cell cycle arrest as well as the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS); specific overexpression of PRDX6 had the opposite effect. Mechanistically, the PRDX6 inactivation displayed decreased levels of PRDX6, N-cadherin, β-catenin, Vimentin, Slug, Snail and Twist-1 through the activation of the PI3K/ AKT/p38/p50 pathways, but they were also significantly inhibited by PRDX6 transfectants. There was also increased transcriptional activation of dimethylation of histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4me3) of PRDX6 promoter via the activation of the PI3K/Akt/NFkB pathways. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that PRDX6 expression plays a characteristic growth-promoting role in CRC metastasis. This study suggests that PRDX6 may serve as a biomarker of node-positive status and may have a role as an important endogenous regulator of cancer cell tumorigenicity in CRC. PRDX6 may also be an effective therapeutic target
