A study of the difference effects on alpha solid solutions of oxygen in titanium dissolving in hydrofluoric acid

    Get PDF
Alpha solid solutions of oxygen in titanium dissolving in hydrofluoric acid exhibited a positive difference effect with k values of 5.7, being independent of the concentration of HF, within the compositional range studied 0 to 5 w/o oxygen. This indicates that various TiOx alloys are polarizable to the same extent by the same strength of anodic current in hydrofluoric acid. The difference effect observed on TiOx alloys dissolving in HF-HCl revealed that the effect is dependent on the oxygen content of the solid solution as well as on the concentration of HCl. The presence of HCl results in a higher k value for the difference effect and accordingly a higher polarizability of TiOx. Measurements of dissolution potentials under different anodic current densities indicated the presence of a protective layer on the surface of the dissolving alloy. These measurements also give support to the explanation of higher polarizability in HF-HCl than in HF alone by the formation of protective layers, and by the effect of HCl on the nature of this layer --Abstract, page ii

The production of the neutral technicolor pseudo Goldstone bosons, P[superscript]0[superscript]\u27 and Psp80[superscript]\u27, at large transverse momentum in pp collisions, pp → g(q)P[superscript]0[superscript]\u27 (Psp80[superscript]\u27)X has been investigated in reactions at a high energy collider such as the SSC. The major two-body and three-body decay modes in tree diagrams are investigated in detail. The t[macron] t decay channel would dominate both the decays of P[superscript]0[superscript]\u27 and Psp80[superscript]\u27 if it is allowed. Otherwise, gg and 3g will be the dominant decay modes unless the mass of the P[superscript]0[superscript]\u27 and Psp80[superscript]\u27 are below 40 GeV, where b[macron] b becomes dominant. According to the QCD backgrounds, which we have also investigated in detail in this work, the signal for t[macron] t is much larger than the background and will be the ideal signal for detecting these bosons. However, in the absence of the t[macron] t channel, the [tau][macron] [tau] mode can be used to identify P[superscript]0[superscript]\u27 up to m P = 300 GeV in the transverse momentum range P⊄ \u3c 100 GeV. Similarly, the b[macron] b decay mode can serve us a signal to identify Psp80[superscript]\u27 up to m P = 300 GeV for P⊄ between 500 and 700 GeV. Our results show that these high transverse momentum production processes are useful for the searching for the P[superscript]0[superscript]\u27 and Psp80[superscript]\u27 at the SSC

    DIB on the Xerox workstation

DIB - A Distributed Implementation of Backtracking is a general-purpose package which allows applications that use tree-traversal algorithms such as backtrack and branch-and-bound to be easily implemented on a multicomputer. The application program needs to specify only the root of the recursion tree, the computation to be performed at each node, and how to generate children at each node. In addition, the application program may optionally specify how to synthesize values of tree nodes from their children\u27s values and how to disseminate information in the tree. DIB uses a distributed algorithm, transparent to the application programmer, that can divide the problem into subproblems and dynamically allocate them to any number of machines. It can also recover from failures of machines. DIB can now run on the Xerox workstation network at Rochester Institute of Technology. Speedup is achievable for exhaustive traversal and branch-and-bound, with only a small fraction of the time is spent in communication

A 2.6 GHz downconverter RFIC is designed and implemented using a 0.18 ÎŒm CMOS standard process. An important goal of the design is to achieve the high linearity that is required in WiMAX systems with a low supply voltage. A passive T phase-shift network is used as an RF input stage in a Gilbert cell to reduce supply voltage. A single supply voltage of 0.8 V is used with a power consumption of 5.87 mW. The T network-based downconverter achieves a conversion gain (CG) of 5 dB, a single-sideband noise figure (NF) of 16.16 dB, an RF-to-IF isolation of greater than 20 dB, and an input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) of 1 dBm when the LO power of -13 dBm is applied

Internet Advertising: A Comparison of Pricing Strategy

    Get PDF
The primary objective of this study is to explore the various ways that Internet advertising provider (IAP) can charge firms to advertise. There are two pricing strategies that can be adopted. The first is called uniform pricing: Firms pay a fixed fee, depending on the size and location of the advertisement. The second strategy is known as two-part tariff: Firms pay a fixed charge and an additional per-click fee. IAPs may adopt one or both of these pricing strategies. Our model hypothesizes that there are two IAPs offering advertising space. The modeling shows that in cases where a uniform pricing strategy is adopted, the fee that each IAP can attain is monotonically decreasing over their substitutability. That is, IAPs that wish to maximize their revenue have to take measures to distinguish themselves from the competition in order to achieve zero substitutability. In cases where a two-part tariff pricing strategy is adopted, the revenue curve becomes convex. In other words, IAPs may choose to have either full substitutability or zero substitutability in order to maximize their profits

Divergent nematic susceptibility in an iron arsenide superconductor

Within the Landau paradigm of continuous phase transitions, ordered states of matter are characterized by a broken symmetry. Although the broken symmetry is usually evident, determining the driving force behind the phase transition is often a more subtle matter due to coupling between otherwise distinct order parameters. In this paper we show how measurement of the divergent nematic susceptibility of an iron pnictide superconductor unambiguously distinguishes an electronic nematic phase transition from a simple ferroelastic distortion. These measurements also reveal an electronic nematic quantum phase transition at the composition with optimal superconducting transition temperature.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

Dynamic Sensing Performance of a Point-Wise Fiber Bragg Grating Displacement Measurement System Integrated in an Active Structural Control System

    Get PDF
In this work, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system which can measure the transient response of out-of-plane point-wise displacement responses is set up on a smart cantilever beam and the feasibility of its use as a feedback sensor in an active structural control system is studied experimentally. An FBG filter is employed in the proposed fiber sensing system to dynamically demodulate the responses obtained by the FBG displacement sensor with high sensitivity. For comparison, a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) is utilized simultaneously to verify displacement detection ability of the FBG sensing system. An optical full-field measurement technique called amplitude-fluctuation electronic speckle pattern interferometry (AF-ESPI) is used to provide full-field vibration mode shapes and resonant frequencies. To verify the dynamic demodulation performance of the FBG filter, a traditional FBG strain sensor calibrated with a strain gauge is first employed to measure the dynamic strain of impact-induced vibrations. Then, system identification of the smart cantilever beam is performed by FBG strain and displacement sensors. Finally, by employing a velocity feedback control algorithm, the feasibility of integrating the proposed FBG displacement sensing system in a collocated feedback system is investigated and excellent dynamic feedback performance is demonstrated. In conclusion, our experiments show that the FBG sensor is capable of performing dynamic displacement feedback and/or strain measurements with high sensitivity and resolution

AbstractEnglish learning is becoming one of the popular movements towards the Globalization. In recent years especially, more people use smartphones to learn English. However, it was found in the current market that most dictionary apps were designed for the younger generation and neglected the needs of the elderly. The issue of memory over-load turned out to be the critical problem of the usability for the elderly, due to the complex menu structures. Thus this study is meant to explore a suitable menu structure for the senior user, and provide suggestions for the relative researches. The study results are:1.Gender: There is no significant between male and female in the operating performance.2.Menu structure: the performance of the hybrid structure is superior to the linear structure.3.Display mode: There is no significant between the horizontal and vertical display modes in operating performance.4.Task Complexity: A positive ratio between task complexity and menu topological structure was revealed, the harder the task complexity, the better performance of mixed structure can be expected
