    Curriculum-Based Professional Learning: The State of the Field

    In recent years, open-source, high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) have presented exciting opportunities to enhance students' engagement and agency in their learning, expand access to grade-level content, and narrow the boundaries between home and school. However, research suggests that curricula, on their own, can only do so much to advance student learning; curriculum-based professional learning is an essential ingredient. Yet, to build the field of curriculum-based professional learning, a field of diverse, interdisciplinary actors from across the education sector must work together to collectively co-produce improved professional learning that strengthens educational experiences and outcomes for students. With support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Columbia University's Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL) researched the state of the field of curriculum-based professional learning, identifying its areas of strength and opportunities to grow, scale, and strengthen the effort. Building on an analysis of information provided by 146 people over the course of 122 interviews, as well as an extensive review of secondary sources, the research reveals that the field of curriculum-based professional learning is emerging. While its impact is not yet consistently felt across the education ecosystem, its infrastructure and field-level agenda are fairly well-developed. Its actors, knowledge base, and resources are still in more nascent stages and require focused attention for the field to reach its potential for impact

    Perceived Executive Leader’s Integrity in Terms of Servant and Ethical Leadership on Job Burnout among Christian Healthcare Service Providers: Test of a Structural Equation Model

    Integrity is a key component in the definition of servant and ethical leadership, and honesty, authenticity, sincerity, respect and righteousness are major virtues and descriptors that make up this leadership integrity. Many leadership studies indicate that the lack of integrity from a leader, as well as the perception of the lack thereof, will exhaust the employees’ exhilaration, degrade their physical and psychological health, and lead to frustration, fatigue and anxiety. For human service professions, this has become an occupational hazard for human service professions and is regarded as the last straw for workers, causing people to burnout and quit their jobs. 325 Full-time employees of the Metroplex Adventist Hospital were surveyed. Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis showed that a leader’s integrity offers two virtues: perceived positive integrity behavior and perceived negative integrity behavior, both of which significantly correlated with job burnout in terms of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Excluding ethnic backgrounds, some of the most significant demographic variables to determine a leader’s integrity and job burnout include Years of Service, gender and age. Employees with income below $29,999, have 1-5 years of service, who are Asian, and are of female gender have experienced the highest score of job burnout and perceived highest score of negative integrity behavior and lowest score of perceived positive integrity behavior

    Implementation of uplink network-coded modulation for two-hop networks

    With the fast growing number of wireless devices and demand of user data, the backhaul load becomes a bottleneck in wireless networks. Physical layer network coding (PNC) allows Access Points (APs) to relay compressed, network coded user data, therefore reducing the backhaul traffic. In this paper, an implementation of uplink Network Coded Modulation (NetCoM) with PNC is presented. A 5-node prototype NetCoM system is established using Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRPs) and a practical PNC scheme designed for binary systems is utilised. An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform implementation and the practical challenges (e.g. device synchronisation and clock drift) of applying OFDM to NetCoM are discussed. To the best of our knowledge this is the first PNC implementation in an uplink scenario in radio access networks and our prototype provides an industrially-applicable implementation of the proposed NetCoM with PNC approach

    The role of strengths in anger and conduct problems in maltreated adolescents

    Despite multi-type maltreatment, some individuals demonstrate positive adaptation and continue to develop in a healthy way. A multitude of strength factors have been linked to adaptive functioning and resilience, but this has not been adequately examined in maltreated adolescent’s psychosocial functioning. This study sought to examine the role of strengths such as having talents/interests, family relationships, educational support, the role of the recognition and application of these strengths, and the role of multi-type maltreatment on anger control and conduct problems. One hundred and thirty participants (61 males; 69 females) aged 13–19 years old were rated using the Singapore version of Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) tool. The results revealed that certain strengths were associated with anger and conduct problems, but the recognition and application of strengths emerged as a consistently significant predictor for both outcomes. Hence, to understand and apply one’s strengths may be equally as important as merely possessing those strengths. This study extends current understanding of the importance of strengths with a group of maltreated adolescents in an Asian context. Adopting a person-centered and strength-based approach will further enhance the effectiveness of interventions and improve outcomes for maltreated adolescents living in residential care

    Use of Q-Learning Approaches for Practical Medium Access Control in Wireless Sensor Networks

    This paper studies the potential of a novel approach to ensure more efficient and intelligent assignment of capacity through medium access control (MAC) in practical wireless sensor networks. Q-Learning is employed as an intelligent transmission strategy. We review the existing MAC protocols in the context of Q-learning. A recently-proposed, ALOHA and Q-Learning based MAC scheme, ALOHA-Q, is considered which improves the channel performance significantly with a key benefit of simplicity. Practical implementation issues of ALOHA-Q are studied. We demonstrate the performance of the ALOHA-Q through extensive simulations and evaluations in various testbeds. A new exploration/exploitation method is proposed to strengthen the merits of the ALOHA-Q against dynamic the channel and environment conditions. © 2016 Elsevier Lt

    Providing curriculum-based professional learning at scale is challenging, complex, and contextualized. It requires time, people, money, and expertise at the systems-level and at the ground-level. No single school system, organization, or actor can accomplish it alone. Instead, scaling the curriculum-based professional learning on which HQIM relies requires a field of diverse, interdisciplinary actors from across the education sector who collectively co-produce improved professional learning through research, strategy, policy, and direct service. Put another way, to strengthen educational experiences and outcomes for students, proponents of HQIM and curriculum-based professional learning must build a strong, resilient field of individuals and organiza­tions working together to transform teaching and learning.     Adapting Cell-Free Protein Synthesis as a Platform Technology for Education

    Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) has emerged as an enabling biotechnology for research and biomanufacturing as it allows for the production of protein without the need for a living cell. Applications of CFPS include the construction of libraries for functional genomics and structural biology, the production of personalized medicine, and the expression of virus-like particles. The absence of a cell wall provides an open platform for direct manipulation of the reaction conditions and biological machinery. This project focuses on adapting the CFPS biotechnology to the classroom, making a hands-on bioengineering approach to learning protein synthesis accessible to students grades K-16 through developing an affordable ‘protein synthesis classroom kit’. To address the barrier of cost to entering the classroom, CFPS reaction was reformulated with the goal to reduce costs while optimizing protein yield. An inexpensive sugar was added to the reaction in varying concentrations for its potential to recycle inorganic phosphate and regenerate ATP. Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP), an expensive energy source, was replaced with a lower concentration of 3-phosphoglyceric acid (3-PGA). We determined that adding the sugar within the range of 10-30mM did not have a significant effect on high-performing cell extracts grown in 2xYTPG for the PEP energy system, and had a slight boost to protein yield at a concentration of 10mM for cell extract grown in 2xYTP media. Although the 3-PGA system yielded less protein than the PEP system, the sugar combined with 3-PGA contributed greater percentage gains for cell extract grown in both media when compared to controls. Future work may include whether the sugar and 3-PGA worked in tandem or independently. Understanding gained from these experiments would contribute to optimizing protein yield and reduce the cost barrier for classroom use
