    Gender Equity in College Athletics: Women Coaches as a Case Study

    As Title IX celebrates its 35th anniversary, many have noted the positive impact it has had on women sports. But there is also an unintended (and oft-neglected) byproduct: as opportunities for female students have increased, opportunities for female professionals have declined. This Article focuses on the barriers that still confront women in college athletics, particularly those who seek professional positions in coaching and administration. Part I presents a brief overview of Title IX, which makes clear its limitations in securing gender equity. Part II.A discusses the declining representation and lower success rate of women coaches, while Part II.B explores the areas of Title IX (and accompanying federal statutory provisions) that have sought to secure their equal treatment. Part III presents the findings of the empirical research conducted for this Article. We surveyed over 450 coaches of women collegiate teams to better understand their needs, priorities, and opinions on coaching and the role of Title IX. Part IV situates these findings in light of other research on barriers for women in male-dominated settings, including coaching, and concludes with potential policy prescriptions

    Harvests and Business Cycles in Nineteenth-Century America

    Most major American industrial business cycles from around 1880 to the First World War were caused by fluctuations in the size of the cotton harvest due to economically exogenous factors such as weather. Wheat and corn harvests did not affect industrial production; nor did the cotton harvest before the late 1870s. The unique effect of the cotton harvest in this period can be explained as an essentially monetary phenomenon, the result of interactions between harvests, international gold flows and high-powered money demand under America's gold-standard regime of 1879-1914.

    Spatially resolved spectroscopy of the globular cluster RZ 2109 and the nature of its black hole

    We present optical HST/STIS spectroscopy of RZ 2109, a globular cluster in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. This globular cluster is notable for hosting an ultraluminous X-ray source as well as associated strong and broad [OIII] 4959, 5007 emission. We show that the HST/STIS spectroscopy spatially resolves the [OIII] emission in RZ 2109. While we are unable to make a precise determination of the morphology of the emission line nebula, the best fitting models all require that the [OIII] 5007 emission has a half light radius in the range 3-7 pc. The extended nature of the [OIII] 5007 emission is inconsistent with published models that invoke an intermediate mass black hole origin. It is also inconsistent with the ionization of ejecta from a nova in the cluster. The spatial scale of the nebula could be produced via the photoionization of a strong wind driven from a stellar mass black hole accreting at roughly its Eddington rate.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures - accepted for publication in Ap

    We present 5201 radial-velocity measurements of 1144 stars, as part of an ongoing study of the young (150 Myr) open cluster M35 (NGC 2168). We have observed M35 since 1997, using the Hydra Multi-Object Spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5m telescope. Our stellar sample covers main-sequence stars over a magnitude range of 13.0<V<16.5 (1.6 - 0.8 Msun) and extends spatially to a radius of 30 arcminutes (7 pc in projection at a distance of 805 pc or 4 core radii). Due to its youth, M35 provides a sample of late-type stars with a range of rotation periods. Therefore, we analyze the radial-velocity measurement precision as a function of the projected rotational velocity. For narrow-lined stars (v sin i < 10 km/s), the radial velocities have a precision of 0.5 km/s, which degrades to 1.0 km/s for stars with v sin i = 50 km/s. The radial-velocity distribution shows a well-defined cluster peak with a central velocity of -8.16 +/- 0.05 km/s, permitting a clean separation of the cluster and field stars. For stars with >=3 measurements, we derive radial-velocity membership probabilities and identify radial-velocity variables, finding 360 cluster members, 55 of which show significant radial- velocity variability. Using these cluster members, we construct a color-magnitude diagram for our stellar sample cleaned of field star contamination. We also compare the spatial distribution of the single and binary cluster members, finding no evidence for mass segregation in our stellar sample. Accounting for measurement precision, we place an upper limit on the radial-velocity dispersion of the cluster of 0.81 +/- 0.08 km/s. After correcting for undetected binaries, we derive a true radial-velocity dispersion of 0.65 +/- 0.10 km/s.Comment: accepted for publication in A

    Measuring the impact of maternal critical care admission on short- and longer-term maternal and birth outcomes

    PurposeFactors increasing the risk of maternal critical illness are rising in prevalence in maternity populations. Studies of general critical care populations highlight that severe illness is associated with longer-term physical and psychological morbidity. We aimed to compare short- and longer-term outcomes between women who required critical care admission during pregnancy/puerperium and those who did not. MethodsA cohort study including all women delivering in Scottish hospitals between 01/01/2005-31/12/2018, using national healthcare databases. The primary exposure was Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission, whilst secondary exposures included High Dependency Unit admission. Outcomes included hospital readmission (1-year post-hospital discharge, 1-year mortality, psychiatric hospital admission, stillbirth and neonatal critical care admission). Multivariable Cox and logistic regression were used to report hazard ratios (HR) and odds ratios (OR) of association between ICU admission and outcomes. ResultsOf 762,918 deliveries, 1,449 (0.18%) women were admitted to ICU, most commonly due to post-partum haemorrhage (225, 15.5%) followed by eclampsia/pre-eclampsia (133, 9.2%). Over-half (53.8%) required mechanical ventilation. One-year hospital readmission was more frequent in women admitted to ICU compared with non-ICU populations (24.5% (n=299) vs 8.9% (n=68,029)). This association persisted after confounder adjustment (HR=1.93, 95%CI 1.33, 2.81, p&lt;0.001). Furthermore, maternal ICU admission was associated with increased 1-year mortality (HR=40.06, 95%CI 24.04,66.76, p&lt;0.001, stillbirth (OR=12.31, 95%CI 7.95,19.08,p&lt;0.001) and neonatal critical care admission (OR=6.99, 95%CI 5.64 ,8.67, p&lt;0.001) after confounder adjustment. ConclusionCritical care admission increases the risk of adverse short-term and long-term maternal, pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. Optimising long-term post-partum care may benefit maternal critical illness survivors.<br/

    Extragalactic Star Cluster Science with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's High Latitude Wide Area Survey and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory

    The Nancy Grace Roman Telescope's High Latitude Wide Area Survey will have a number of synergies with the Vera Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), particularly for extragalactic star clusters. Understanding the nature of star clusters and star cluster systems are key topics in many areas of astronomy, chief among them stellar evolution, high energy astrophysics, galaxy assembly/dark matter, the extragalactic distance scale, and cosmology. One of the challenges will be disentangling the age/metallicity degeneracy because young (\simMyr) metal-rich clusters have similar SEDs to old (\simGyr) metal-poor clusters. Rubin will provide homogeneous, ugrizyugrizy photometric coverage, and measurements in the red Roman filters will help break the age-metallicity and age-extinction degeneracies, providing the first globular cluster samples that cover wide areas while essentially free of contamination from Milky Way stars. Roman's excellent spatial resolution will also allow measurements of cluster sizes. We advocate for observations of a large sample of galaxies with a range of properties and morphologies in the Rubin/LSST footprint matching the depth of the LSST Wide-Fast-Deep field ii band limit (26.3 mag), and recommend adding the F213 filter to the survey.Comment: white paper submitted for Roman CCS inpu
