Einstein Cluster Alignments Revisited
We have examined whether the major axes of rich galaxy clusters tend to point
toward their nearest neighboring cluster. We have used the data of Ulmer,
McMillan, and Kowalski, who used position angles based on X-ray morphology. We
also studied a subset of this sample with updated positions and distances from
the MX Northern Abell Cluster Survey (for rich clusters () with well
known redshifts). A Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test showed no significant signal
for nonrandom angles on any scale Mpc. However, refining the
null hypothesis with the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, we found a high confidence
signal for alignment. Confidence levels increase to a high of 99.997% as only
near neighbors which are very close are considered. We conclude there is a
strong alignment signal in the data, consistent with gravitational instability

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Chemical Abundances Of Stars In The Halo (CASH) Project. I. The Lithium-, s-, And r-Enhanced Metal-Poor Giant HKII 17435-00532
We present the first detailed abundance analysis of the metal-poor giant HKII 17435-00532. This star was observed as part of the University of Texas long-term project Chemical Abundances of Stars in the Halo ( CASH). A spectrum was obtained with the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope with a resolving power of R similar to 15,000. Our analysis reveals that this star may be located on the red giant branch, red horizontal branch, or early asymptotic giant branch. We find that this metal-poor (Fe/H = -2.2) star has an unusually high lithium abundance [log epsilon(Li) +2.1], mild carbon (C/Fe = +0.7) and sodium (]Na/Fe] = +0.6) enhancement, as well as enhancement of both s-process ([Ba/Fe] = +0.8) and r-process ([Eu/Fe] = +0.5) material. The high Li abundance can be explained by self-enrichment through extra mixing that connects the convective envelope with the outer regions of the H-burning shell. If so, HKII 17435-00532 is the most metal-poor star in which this short-lived phase of Li enrichment has been observed. The Na and n-capture enrichment can be explained by mass transfer from a companion that passed through the thermally pulsing AGB phase of evolution with only a small initial enrichment of r-process material present in the birth cloud. Pharmacological Chaperoning of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Reduces the Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Response
We report the first observation that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR) can decrease when a central nervous system drug acts as an intracellular pharmacological chaperone for its classic receptor. Transient expression of α4β2 nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) in Neuro-2a cells induced the nuclear translocation of activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6), which is part of the UPR. Cells were exposed for 48 h to the full agonist nicotine, the partial agonist cytisine, or the competitive antagonist dihydro-β-erythroidine; we also tested mutant nAChRs that readily exit the ER. Each of these four manipulations increased Sec24D-enhanced green fluorescent protein fluorescence of condensed ER exit sites and attenuated translocation of ATF6-enhanced green fluorescent protein to the nucleus. However, we found no correlation among the manipulations regarding other tested parameters [i.e., changes in nAChR stoichiometry (α4_2β2_3 versus α4_3β2_2), changes in ER and trans-Golgi structures, or the degree of nAChR up-regulation at the plasma membrane]. The four manipulations activated 0 to 0.4% of nAChRs, which shows that activation of the nAChR channel did not underlie the reduced ER stress. Nicotine also attenuated endogenously expressed ATF6 translocation and phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2α in mouse cortical neurons transfected with α4β2 nAChRs. We conclude that, when nicotine accelerates ER export of α4β2 nAChRs, this suppresses ER stress and the UPR. Suppression of a sustained UPR may explain the apparent neuroprotective effect that causes the inverse correlation between a person's history of tobacco use and susceptibility to developing Parkinson's disease. Discovery of HE 1523-0901, a Strongly r-Process Enhanced Metal-Poor Star with Detected Uranium
We present age estimates for the newly discovered very r-process enhanced
metal-poor star HE 1523-0901 ([Fe/H]=-2.95) based on the radioactive decay of
Th and U. The bright (V=11.1) giant was found amongst a sample of bright
metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. From an abundance
analysis of a high-resolution (R=75,000) VLT/UVES spectrum we find HE 1523-0901
to be strongly overabundant in r-process elements ([r/Fe]=1.8). The abundances
of heavy neutron-capture elements (Z>56) measured in HE 1523-0901 match the
scaled solar r-process pattern extremely well. We detect the strongest optical
U line at 3859.57 A. For the first time, we are able to employ several
different chronometers, such as the U/Th, U/Ir, Th/Eu and Th/Os ratios to
measure the age of a star. The weighted average age of HE 1523-0901 is 13.2

A Search for Extraplanar Dust in Nearby Edge-On Spirals
We present high resolution BV images of 12 edge-on spiral galaxies observed
with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. These images were obtained to search for
extraplanar (|z| > 0.4 kpc) absorbing dust structures similar to those
previously found in NGC 891 (Howk & Savage 1997). Our imaged galaxies include a
sample of seven massive L_*-like spiral galaxies within D<25 Mpc that have
inclinations i > 87 deg from the plane of the sky. We find that five of these
seven systems show extraplanar dust, visible as highly-structured absorbing
clouds against the background stellar light of the galaxies. The more prominent
structures are estimated to have associated gas masses >10^5 M_sun; the implied
potential energies are > 10^(52) ergs. All of the galaxies in our sample that
show detectable halpha emission at large z also show extraplanar dust
structures. None of those galaxies for which extraplanar halpha searches were
negative show evidence for extensive high-z dust. The existence of extraplanar
dust is a common property of massive spiral galaxies. We discuss several
mechanisms for shaping the observed dust features, emphasizing the possibility
that these dusty clouds represent the dense phase of a multiphase medium at
high-z in spiral galaxies. The correlation between high-z dust and extraplanar
Halpha emission may simply suggest that both trace the high-z interstellar
medium in its various forms (or phases), the existence of which may ultimately
be driven by vigorous star formation in the underlying disk. (Abstract

The Nearest Neighbor Alignment of Cluster X-ray Isophotes
We examine the orientations of rich galaxy cluster X-ray isophotes with
respect to their rich nearest neighbors using existing samples of Abell cluster
position angles measured from {\it Einstein} and {\it ROSAT} observations. We
study a merged subset of these samples using updated and improved positions and
redshifts for Abell/ACO clusters. We find high confidence for alignment, which
increases as nearest neighbor distance is restricted. We conclude that there is
a strong alignment signal in all this data, consistent with gravitational
instability acting on Gaussian perturbations.Comment: Moderate revisions, including additional test for systematic error.

The Transit Light Curve of an Exozodiacal Dust Cloud
Planets embedded within debris disks gravitationally perturb nearby dust and
can create clumpy, azimuthally asymmetric circumstellar ring structures that
rotate in lock with the planet. The Earth creates one such structure in the
solar zodiacal dust cloud. In an edge-on system, the dust "clumps" periodically
pass in front of the star as the planet orbits, occulting and
forward-scattering starlight. In this paper, we predict the shape and magnitude
of the corresponding transit signal. To do so, we model the dust distributions
of collisional, steady-state exozodiacal clouds perturbed by planetary
companions. We examine disks with dusty ring structures formed by the planet's
resonant trapping of in-spiraling dust for a range of planet masses and
semi-major axes, dust properties, and disk masses. We synthesize edge-on images
of these models and calculate the transit signatures of the resonant ring
structures. The transit light curves created by dusty resonant ring structures
typically exhibit two broad transit minima that lead and trail the planetary
transit. We find that Jupiter-mass planets embedded within disks hundreds of
times denser than our zodiacal cloud can create resonant ring structures with
transit depths up to , possibly detectable with \emph{Kepler}.
Resonant rings produced by planets more or less massive than Jupiter produce
smaller transit depths. Observations of these transit signals may provide upper
limits on the degree of asymmetry in exozodiacal clouds.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figure
The Tribological Behaviour of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polyaryletherketones (PAEKs) through their Glass Transitions.
yesAdvanced engineering polymers of the Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family with carbon fibre reinforcement are finding application in engineering systems as tribological bearing surfaces under severe operating conditions that cyclically move the polymer into and beyond the glass transition temperature region. To support such an application, the friction in high speed and low load PAEK-steel sliding contacts was investigated both unlubricated and lubricated with a trinonyl trimellitate ester, a base fluid for high temperature industrial lubricants. Four polymers in the PAEK family, PEEK, PEK, PEKEKK and PEKK, with 30%wt of carbon fibre whiskers were tested against an AISI 4140 steel disc. When unlubricated, low friction depended upon the formation of a PAEK transfer film on the steel disc and when this became unstable in the glass transition region the friction increased to much higher levels with associated polymer surface damage. Frictional heating due to the high sliding speed dominated the differences in glass transition behaviour between the four PAEKs. When lubricated, the lubricant film controlled friction and there was no significant effect of the glass transition of any of the PAEKs. The irreversible nature of the glass transition in PAEKs in such tribological applications, due to high surface damage at high temperature, means that it is essential to ensure effective lubrication in both fluid film and boundary lubrication.Innovate UK, Knowledge Transfer Partnershi
HIV-1 Protease, Reverse Transcriptase, and Integrase Variation
ABSTRACT HIV-1 protease (PR), reverse transcriptase (RT), and integrase (IN) variability presents a challenge to laboratories performing genotypic resistance testing. This challenge will grow with increased sequencing of samples enriched for proviral DNA such as dried blood spots and increased use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) to detect low-abundance HIV-1 variants. We analyzed PR and RT sequences from >100,000 individuals and IN sequences from >10,000 individuals to characterize variation at each amino acid position, identify mutations indicating APOBEC-mediated G-to-A editing, and identify mutations resulting from selective drug pressure. Forty-seven percent of PR, 37% of RT, and 34% of IN positions had one or more amino acid variants with a prevalence of ≥1%. Seventy percent of PR, 60% of RT, and 60% of IN positions had one or more variants with a prevalence of ≥0.1%. Overall 201 PR, 636 RT, and 346 IN variants had a prevalence of ≥0.1%. The median intersubtype prevalence ratios were 2.9-, 2.1-, and 1.9-fold for these PR, RT, and IN variants, respectively. Only 5.0% of PR, 3.7% of RT, and 2.0% of IN variants had a median intersubtype prevalence ratio of ≥10-fold. Variants at lower prevalences were more likely to differ biochemically and to be part of an electrophoretic mixture compared to high-prevalence variants. There were 209 mutations indicative of APOBEC-mediated G-to-A editing and 326 mutations nonpolymorphic treatment selected. Identification of viruses with a high number of APOBEC-associated mutations will facilitate the quality control of dried blood spot sequencing. Identifying sequences with a high proportion of rare mutations will facilitate the quality control of NGS. IMPORTANCE Most antiretroviral drugs target three HIV-1 proteins: PR, RT, and IN. These proteins are highly variable: many different amino acids can be present at the same position in viruses from different individuals. Some of the amino acid variants cause drug resistance and occur mainly in individuals receiving antiretroviral drugs. Some variants result from a human cellular defense mechanism called APOBEC-mediated hypermutation. Many variants result from naturally occurring mutation. Some variants may represent technical artifacts. We studied PR and RT sequences from >100,000 individuals and IN sequences from >10,000 individuals to quantify variation at each amino acid position in these three HIV-1 proteins. We performed analyses to determine which amino acid variants resulted from antiretroviral drug selection pressure, APOBEC-mediated editing, and naturally occurring variation.
