    Stress-dependent ultrasonic scattering in polycrystalline materials

    Stress-dependent elastic moduli of polycrystalline materials are used in a statistically based model for the scattering of ultrasonic waves from randomly oriented grains that are members of a stressed polycrystal. The stress is assumed to be homogeneous and can be either residual or generated from external loads. The stress-dependent elastic properties are incorporated into the definition of the differential scattering cross-section, which defines how strongly an incident wave is scattered into various directions. Nine stress-dependent differential scattering cross-sections or scattering coefficients are defined to include all possibilities of incident and scattered waves, which can be either longitudinal or (two) transverse wave types. The evaluation of the scattering coefficients considers polycrystalline aluminum that is uniaxially stressed. An analysis of the influence of incident wave propagation direction, scattering direction, frequency, and grain size on the stress-dependency of the scattering coefficients follows. Scattering coefficients for aluminum indicate that ultrasonic scattering is much more sensitive to a uniaxial stress than ultrasonic phase velocities. By developing the stress-dependent scattering properties of polycrystals, the influence of acoustoelasticity on the amplitudes of waves propagating in stressed polycrystalline materials can be better understood.     Broken Promises: The Effect of Psychological Contract Violation on Student-Athlete Trust and Intentions to Leave Their Team

    The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that increased perceptions psychological contract breach between student-athletes and their coaches have on student-athletes’ affective trust in their coaches, cognitive trust in their coaches, and intentions to leave their team. Based on a sample of 248 NCAA Division I and Division II student-athletes, the results reveal that increased perceptions of psychological contract breach significantly lower student-athletes’ cognitive trust in their coaches and significantly increases their intentions to leave their team. Higher levels of psychological contract violation acted as a partial mediator on the relationship between psychological contract breach and cognitive trust. Psychological contract violation also acted as a partial mediator on the relationship between psychological breach and intentions to leave. Neither perceptions of psychological contract breach nor psychological contract violation were significantly related to affective trust

    Benefits of amplification for speech recognition in background noise

    The purpose of the present study was to examine the benefits of providing audible speech to listeners with sensorineural hearing loss when the speech is presented in a background noise. Previous studies have shown that when listeners have a severe hearing loss in the higher frequencies, providing audible speech (in a quiet background) to these higher frequencies usually results in no improvement in speech recognition. In the present experiments, speech was presented in a background of multitalker babble to listeners with various severities of hearing loss. The signal was low-pass filtered at numerous cutoff frequencies and speech recognition was measured as additional high-frequency speech information was provided to the hearing-impaired listeners. It was found in all cases, regardless of hearing loss or frequency range, that providing audible speech resulted in an increase in recognition score. The change in recognition as the cutoff frequency was increased, along with the amount of audible speech information in each condition (articulation index), was used to calculate the "efficiency" of providing audible speech. Efficiencies were positive for all degrees of hearing loss. However, the gains in recognition were small, and the maximum score obtained by an listener was low, due to the noise background.     The Impact of Psychological Contract Breach on Student-Athlete Perceived In-Role Performance and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors

    Recent research has demonstrated that breached psychological contracts between student-athletes and their coaches can have negative consequences for team members (Barnhill, Czekanski, & Turner, 2013; Barnhill & Turner, 2013, 2014). While these studies are informative, they have been focused on student-athlete attitudes. The purpose of this study was to explore how psychological contracts affect student-athletes\u27 behaviors and performance. The results indicated that neither psychological contract breaches, nor psychological contract violation are significantly related to organizational citizenship behaviors or in-role performance of studentathletes. Implications and suggestions for future results are discussed

    We exploit the optical and spatial features of subwavelength nanostructures to examine individual receptors on the plasma membrane of living cells. Receptors were sequestered in portions of the membrane projected into zero-mode waveguides. Using single-step photobleaching of green fluorescent protein incorporated into individual subunits, the resulting spatial isolation was used to measure subunit stoichiometry in α4β4 and α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine and P2X2 ATP receptors.     Spectral peak resolution and speech recognition in quiet: Normal hearing, hearing impaired and cochlear implant listeners

    Spectral peak resolution was investigated in normal hearing (NH), hearing impaired (HI), and cochlear implant (CI) listeners. The task involved discriminating between two rippled noise stimuli in which the frequency positions of the log-spaced peaks and valleys were interchanged. The ripple spacing was varied adaptively from 0.13 to 11.31 ripples/octave, and the minimum ripple spacing at which a reversal in peak and trough positions could be detected was determined as the spectral peak resolution threshold for each listener. Spectral peak resolution was best, on average, in NH listeners, poorest in CI listeners, and intermediate for HI listeners. There was a significant relationship between spectral peak resolution and both vowel and consonant recognition in quiet across the three listener groups. The results indicate that the degree of spectral peak resolution required for accurate vowel and consonant recognition in quiet backgrounds is around 4 ripples/octave, and that spectral peak resolution poorer than around 1–2 ripples/octave may result in highly degraded speech recognition.     Comparative growth and static allometry in the genus Chlorocebus

    Characterizing variation in growth across populations is critical to understanding multiple aspects of development in primates, including within-taxon developmental plasticity and the evolution of life history patterns. Growth in wild primates has often been reported and directly compared across larger taxonomic groups and within social groups, but comparisons are rarely investigated across widely dispersed populations of a single taxon. With the Vervet Phenome-Genome Project and the International Vervet Research Consortium, we trapped 936 vervet monkeys of all ages representing three populations (Kenyan pygerythrus, South African pygerythrus, and sabaeus from St. Kitts & Nevis). We gathered 10 different body measurements from each including mass, body breadth and length, segmental limb lengths, and chest circumference. To gain a better understanding of how ontogenetic patterns vary in these populations, we calculated bivariate allometry coefficients, derived using PCA on log-transformed and z-standardized trait values, and compared them to isometric vector coefficients. Within all population samples, around weaning age most traits showed a negative allometric relationship to body length. As each population ages, however, distinct patterns emerge, showing population differences in onset and intensity of growth among traits. In concordance with other analyses on growth in these populations, our results suggest that there exist relative differences in patterns of growth between Chlorocebus populations, further suggesting selection for unique developmental pathways in each

    Acoustoelasticity of Polycrystalline Materials; a Formalism based on the Self-Consistent Elastic Constants

    Elastic constants of polycrystalline materials can be obtained through methods of ensemble averages of the elastic constants belonging to individual grains. Assumptions are often made to relate the local strains (stresses) within individual grains as a result of a macroscopic strain (stress) on the polycrystal. The different assumptions lead to different estimates for the elastic constants of polycrystals. However, an exact formulation is possible, which enforces continuity (at the grain boundaries) between the macroscopic strain (stress) and the strain (stress) in the grain. The resulting estimates of the polycrystal’s elastic constants are known as selfconsistent because either a stress or strain formalism leads to the same estimates. This presentation extends the idea of macroscopic and local continuity of stress and strain and applies it to the theory of acoustoelasticity. Acoustoelasticity describes the dependence of the properties of an elastic wave on the stress state in the material supporting the wave. The selfconsistent formalism enters the elastic constitutive relation developed by C.-S. Man and coworkers. Such a constitutive relation is a function of initial stress, which can be either residual stress resulting from a series of inhomogeneous plastic deformations or generated from external mechanisms. The constitutive relation is used to derive the stress-dependent Christoffel equations for the polycrystal. Solutions to the Christoffel equation yield expressions for the phase velocities and displacement directions of elastic waves in a stressed polycrystal. A comparison is made between phase velocity values based on ensemble averaging originating from the self-consistent formalism and the phase velocities arriving from previous models. The cases in which the present model shows considerable differences from the previous models are presented.
