    The objective of this paper is to study the socio-environmental management of a company in the cellulose industry based on the organization’s interaction in the social field. To achieve this, a theoretical-methodological model, based on an interpretative approach and on the understanding of environmental management as a social practice, was used. Triangulation of document analysis techniques and deep semi-open interviews were carried out. To interpret the results, content analysis was used to identify how managers understand the socially constructed relations between the organization and the environment. The results of this research also show that the organization is seeking to implement management practices that guarantee the efficiency of its production process while attempting to mitigate its environmental impacts, consolidating its image as an open and transparent company that operates according to the philosophy of corporative social responsibility.Agribusiness, Agricultural Finance, Industrial Organization, Socio-environmental management, social practice, organizations.,

    Análise da correlação entre os níveis de RNA do HIV-1 no líquido cefalorraquidiano e plasma em pacientes com doença neurológica oportunista

    The question of whether HIV-1 RNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is derived from viral replication in the central nervous system or simply reflects the transit of infected lymphocytes from the blood compartment has long been a matter of debate. Some studies found no correlation between CSF and plasma viral load, whereas others did. The lack of a correlation between the two compartments suggests that the presence of HIV-1 RNA is not simply due to the passive passage of the virus from blood to CSF but rather due to intrathecal replication. To evaluate the correlation between plasma and CSF HIV-1 RNA levels and to identify situations in which there is no correlation between the two compartments, seventy patients were prospectively studied. The association between CSF and plasma viral load was evaluated in the total population and in subgroups of patients with similar characteristics. A correlation between the CSF and plasma compartments was observed for patients undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), those with a CD4 T lymphocyte count lower than 200 cells/mm³, and those with increased CSF protein content. On the other hand, no correlation was observed for patients without adequate virological control, who had a CD4 count higher than 200 cells/mm³ and who did not use HAART. The correlation between the two compartments observed in some patients suggests that CSF HIV-1 RNA levels may reflect plasma levels in these subjects. In contrast, the lack of a correlation between the two compartments in patients who were not on HAART and who had normal CSF proteins and a poor virological control possibly indicates compartmentalization of the virus in CSF and, consequently, plasma-independent intrathecal viral replication.Tem sido objeto de debate a questão se o RNA do HIV-1 no líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR) é derivado da replicação viral no sistema nervoso central ou simplesmente reflete o tráfego de linfócitos infectados do compartimento sanguíneo. Alguns estudos não mostraram correlação entre a carga viral do plasma e LCR, mas outros sim. A falta de correlação entre os dois compartimentos sugere que a presença de RNA do HIV-1 não é simplesmente devido à passagem do vírus do plasma para o LCR, mas sim a uma replicação intratecal. Para avaliar a correlação entre os níveis de RNA do HIV-1 no plasma e no LCR e tentar identificar situações, na qual, não existe a correlação entre os dois compartimentos avaliaram-se setenta pacientes prospectivamente. A associação entre a carga viral do LCR e plasma foi avaliada na população total e em subgrupos de pacientes com características similares. A correlação entre os dois compartimentos foi observada em pacientes que estavam em uso da terapia antiretroviral (HAART), naqueles que tinham contagem de linfócitos CD4 menor que 200 céls/mm³ e naqueles com aumento da concentração de proteínas no LCR. Por outro lado, não houve correlação para os pacientes que não tinham um controle virológico adequado, os que tinham contagem de CD4 maior que 200 céls/mm³ e aqueles que não estavam usando HAART. A correlação entre os dois compartimentos observada em alguns pacientes sugere que os níveis de RNA do HIV-1 no LCR podem refletir os níveis plasmáticos nestes pacientes. E a falta de correlação ente os dois compartimentos em pacientes que não usavam HAART, nos que tinham uma concentração de proteínas no LCR normal, e nos que não apresentavam bom controle virológico, indica provavelmente a compartimentalização do vírus no LCR e consequentemente replicação viral intratecal independente da do plasma

    The Database of European Forest Insect and Disease Disturbances: DEFID2

    [EN] Insect and disease outbreaks in forests are biotic disturbances that can profoundly alter ecosystem dynamics. In many parts of the world, these disturbance regimes are intensifying as the climate changes and shifts the distribution of species and biomes. As a result, key forest ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, regulation of water flows, wood production, protection of soils, and the conservation of bio-diversity, could be increasingly compromised. Despite the relevance of these detri-mental effects, there are currently no spatially detailed databases that record insect and disease disturbances on forests at the pan-European scale. Here, we present the new Database of European Forest Insect and Disease Disturbances (DEFID2). It comprises over 650,000 harmonized georeferenced records, mapped as polygons or points, of insects and disease disturbances that occurred between 1963 and 2021 in European forests. The records currently span eight different countries and were acquired through diverse methods (e.g., ground surveys, remote sensing techniques). The records in DEFID2 are described by a set of qualitative attributes, including se-verity and patterns of damage symptoms, agents, host tree species, climate-driven trigger factors, silvicultural practices, and eventual sanitary interventions. They are further complemented with a satellite- based quantitative characterization of the affected forest areas based on Landsat Normalized Burn Ratio time series, and dam-age metrics derived from them using the LandTrendr spectral–temporal segmentation algorithm (including onset, duration, magnitude, and rate of the disturbance), and pos-sible interactions with windthrow and wildfire events. The DEFID2 database is a novel resource for many large-scale applications dealing with biotic disturbances. It offers a unique contribution to design networks of experiments, improve our understanding of ecological processes underlying biotic forest disturbances, monitor their dynamics, and enhance their representation in land-climate models. Further data sharing is en-couraged to extend and improve the DEFID2 database continuously.     Factors influencing cerebrospinal fluid and plasma HIV-1 RNA detection rate in patients with and without opportunistic neurological disease during the HAART era

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In the central nervous system, HIV replication can occur relatively independent of systemic infection, and intrathecal replication of HIV-1 has been observed in patients with HIV-related and opportunistic neurological diseases. The clinical usefulness of HIV-1 RNA detection in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with opportunistic neurological diseases, or the effect of opportunistic diseases on CSF HIV levels in patients under HAART has not been well defined. We quantified CSF and plasma viral load in HIV-infected patients with and without different active opportunistic neurological diseases, determined the characteristics that led to a higher detection rate of HIV RNA in CSF, and compared these two compartments.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective study was conducted on 90 HIV-infected patients submitted to lumbar puncture as part of a work-up for suspected neurological disease. Seventy-one patients had active neurological diseases while the remaining 19 did not.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>HIV-1 RNA was quantified in 90 CSF and 70 plasma samples. The HIV-1 RNA detection rate in CSF was higher in patients with neurological diseases, in those with a CD4 count lower than 200 cells/mm<sup>3</sup>, and in those not receiving antiretroviral therapy, as well as in patients with detectable plasma HIV-1 RNA. Median viral load was lower in CSF than in plasma in the total population, in patients without neurological diseases, and in patients with toxoplasmic encephalitis, while no significant difference between the two compartments was observed for patients with cryptococcal meningitis and HIV-associated dementia. CSF viral load was lower in patients with cryptococcal meningitis and neurotoxoplasmosis under HAART than in those not receiving HAART.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Detection of HIV-1 RNA in CSF was more frequent in patients with neurological disease, a CD4 count lower than 200 cells/mm<sup>3 </sup>and detectable plasma HIV-1. Median HIV-1 RNA levels were generally lower in CSF than in plasma but some patients showed higher CSF levels, and no difference between these two compartments was observed in patients with cryptococcal meningitis and HIV-associated dementia, suggesting the presence of intrathecal viral replication in these patients. HAART played a role in the control of CSF HIV levels even in patients with cryptococcal meningitis and neurotoxoplasmosis in whom viral replication is potentially higher.</p
