Glutamat-Rezeptoren und synaptische Plastizität in der lateralen Amygdala

    Get PDF

"The panel study 'Labour Market and Social Security' (PASS), established by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), is a new dataset for labour market, welfare state and poverty research in Germany, creating a new empirical basis for the scientific community and political consulting. This Datenreport provides an overview of the first survey wave, for which 18,954 persons were interviewed in 12,794 households between December 2006 and July 2007. The study is carried out as part of the IAB's research into the German Social Code Book II (SGB II). The IAB is charged by law with studying the effects of benefits under SGB II for integration into the labour market and subsistence benefits. However, due to the complex sample design, it also enables researchers to answer questions far beyond these issues. Five core questions influenced the development of the new study, which are detailed in Achatz et al. (2007): 1. What options exist to regain independence from Unemployment Benefit II? 2. In which ways does the social situation of a household change when it receives benefits? 3. How do persons concerned cope with their situation? Will attitudes of the respondents that are constitutive for their actions change over time? 4. In which form do contacts between benefit recipients and institutions providing basic social security actually take place? What are the institutional procedures applied in practice? 5. Which employment career patterns or household dynamics lead to receipt of Unemployment Benefit II? The following brief overview describes the motivation for carrying out the survey, its contents and the study design." Annual Report: 2010-2011 Storm Season Sampling For NON-DRY DOCK STORMWATER MONITORING FOR PUGET SOUND NAVAL SHIPYARD, BREMERTON, WA

    Get PDF
This interim report summarizes the stormwater monitoring conducted for non-dry dock outfalls in both the confined industrial area and the residential areas of Naval Base Kitsap within the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (referred to as the Shipyard). This includes the collection, analyses, and descriptive statistics for stormwater sampling conducted from November 2010 through April 2011. Seven stormwater basins within the Shipyard were sampled during at least three storm events to characterize non-dry dock stormwater discharges at selected stormwater drains located within the facility. This serves as the Phase I component of the project and Phase II is planned for the 2011-2012 storm season. These data will assist the Navy, USEPA, Ecology and other stakeholders in understanding the nature and condition of stormwater discharges from the Shipyard and inform the permitting process for new outfall discharges. The data from Phase I was compiled with current stormwater data available from the Shipyard, Sinclair/Dyes Inlet watershed, and Puget Sound in order to support technical investigations for the Draft NPDES permit. The permit would require storm event sampling at selected stormwater drains located within the Shipyard. However, the data must be considered on multiple scales to truly understand potential impairments to beneficial uses within Sinclair and Dyes Inlets

Thick film PZT transducer arrays for particle manipulation

    Get PDF
This paper reports the fabrication and evaluation of a two-dimensional thick film PZT ultrasonic transducer array operating at about 7.5 MHz for particle manipulation. All layers on the array are screen-printed and sintered on an Al2O3 substrate without further processes or patterning. The measured dielectric constant of the PZT is 2250 ± 100, and the dielectric loss is 0.09 ± 0.005 at 10 kHz. Finite element analysis has been used to predict the behaviour of the array and impedance spectroscopy and laser vibrometry have been used to characterise its performance. The measured deflection of a single activate element is on the order of tens of nanometres with 20 Vpp input. Particle manipulation experiments have been performed by coupling the thick film array to a capillary containing polystyrene microspheres in water

Carglumic acid: an additional therapy in the treatment of organic acidurias with hyperammonemia?

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

Hyperammonemia in patients with methylmalonic aciduria (MMA) and propionic aciduria (PA) is caused by accumulation of propionyl-CoA which decreases the synthesis of N-acetyl-glutamate, the natural activator of carbamyl phosphate synthetase 1. A treatment approach with carglumic acid, the structural analogue of N-acetyl-glutamate, has been proposed to decrease high ammonia levels encountered in MMA and PA crises.

Case presentation

We described two patients (one with MMA and one with PA) with hyperammonemia at diagnosis. Carglumic acid, when associated with standard treatment of organic acidurias, may be helpful in normalizing the ammonia level.

Conclusion

Even though the usual treatment which decreases toxic metabolites remains the standard, carglumic acid could be helpful in lowering plasma ammonia levels over 400 micromol/L more rapidly.</p

AGN Driven Weather and Multiphase Gas in the Core of the NGC 5044 Galaxy Group

A deep Chandra observation of the X-ray bright group, NGC 5044, shows that the central region of this group has been strongly perturbed by repeated AGN outbursts. These recent AGN outbursts have produced many small X-ray cavities, cool filaments and cold fronts. We find a correlation between the coolest X-ray emitting gas and the morphology of the Ha filaments. The Ha filaments are oriented in the direction of the X-ray cavities, suggesting that the warm gas responsible for the Halpha emission originated near the center of NGC 5044 and was dredged up behind the buoyant, AGN-inflated X-ray cavities. A detailed spectroscopic analysis shows that the central region of NGC 5044 contains spatially varying amounts of multiphase gas. The regions with the most inhomogeneous gas temperature distribution tend to correlate with the extended 235 MHz and 610 MHz radio emission detected by the GMRT. This may result from gas entrainment within the radio emitting plasma or mixing of different temperature gas in the regions surrounding the radio emitting plasma by AGN induced turbulence. Accounting for the effects of multiphase gas, we find that the abundance of heavy elements is fairly uniform within the central 100 kpc, with abundances of 60-80% solar for all elements except oxygen, which has a significantly sub-solar abundance. In the absence of continued AGN outbursts, the gas in the center of NGC 5044 should attain a more homogeneous distribution of gas temperature through the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy and heat conduction in approximately 10e8 yr. The presence of multiphase gas in NGC 5044 indicates that the time between recent AGN outbursts has been less than approximately 10e8 yr

"The panel study 'Labour Market and Social Security' (PASS), established by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), is a new dataset for labour market, welfare state and poverty research in Germany, creating a new empirical basis for the scientific community and for policy advice. This Datenreport provides an overview of the second survey wave, for which 12,487 individuals were interviewed in 8,429 households between December 2007 and July 2008. 10,114 individuals and 7,342 households were interviewed for the second time in the context of PASS. The spectrum of questions and the design of PASS are intended to close gaps in the existing stock of data. PASS has three main characteristics that extend analysis potential beyond that of the Federal Employment Agency's administrative data: 1. The panel takes the household context into account - including the situation before and after receipt of Unemployment Benefit II. 2. The panel is complete in that it covers all groups of persons and all employment biographies, not only people in dependent employment, unemployed people and those in need of assistance. The dataset also provides information on the status during phases of economic inactivity, self-employment or employment as civil servants. 3. The panel collects additional or significantly more detailed data on relevant characteristics such as attitudes, employment potential or job-search behaviour." Isotropic AGN Heating with Small Radio Quiet Bubbles in the NGC 5044 Group

(abridged) A Chandra observation of the X-ray bright group NGC 5044 shows that the X-ray emitting gas has been strongly perturbed by recent outbursts from the central AGN and also by motion of the central dominant galaxy relative to the group gas. The NGC 5044 group hosts many small radio quiet cavities with a nearly isotropic distribution, cool filaments, a semi-circular cold front and a two-armed spiral shaped feature of cool gas. A GMRT observation of NGC 5044 at 610 MHz shows the presence of extended radio emission with a "torus-shaped" morphology. The largest X-ray filament appears to thread the radio torus, suggesting that the lower entropy gas within the filament is material being uplifted from the center of the group. The radio emission at 235 MHz is much more extended than the emission at 610 MHz, with little overlap between the two frequencies. One component of the 235 MHz emission passes through the largest X-ray cavity and is then deflected just behind the cold front. A second detached radio lobe is also detected at 235 MHz beyond the cold front. All of the smaller X-ray cavities in the center of NGC 5044 are undetected in the GMRT observations. Since the smaller bubbles are probably no longer momentum driven by the central AGN, their motion will be affected by the group "weather" as they buoyantly rise outward. Hence, most of the enthalpy within the smaller bubbles will likely be deposited near the group center and isotropized by the group weather. The total mechanical power of the smaller radio quiet cavities is Pc=9.2×1041P_c = 9.2 \times 10^{41}erg s1^{-1} which is sufficient to suppress about one-half of the total radiative cooling within the central 10 kpc. This is consistent with the presence of Hα\alpha emission within this region which shows that at least some of the gas is able to cool
