Russia and the World Trade Organization: Will TRIPS Be a Stumbling Block to Accession?
The study which is presented in this report has been carried out at R1K, which is a section of the Rönnskär smelter plant. The plant is owned by New Boliden. In the year of 2007 a new gas system containing several new components were built. The operators that were in charge of monitoring the new system were not given sufficient education about the new components and their part in the system as whole. The purpose of this study is to create a function functional description about the system and all its components. The functional description is to be presented in the form of an easy-to-use manual for both experienced and new operators. The manual has been compiled from manufacturer manuals, construction blueprints, scattered operator manuals, knowledge of the ABB operator-system and interviews with various employees. To give the operators and the readers a good visual overview of all the different gas and fluid flows in the system pictures have been taken. All this have been compiled into the operator manual that is the functional description. (See attachment 1)
Understanding Database Reconstruction Attacks on Public Data
In 2020 the U.S. Census Bureau will conduct the Constitutionally mandated decennial Census of Population and Housing. Because a census involves collecting large amounts of private data under the promise of confidentiality, traditionally statistics are published only at high levels of aggregation. Published statistical tables are vulnerable to DRAs (database reconstruction attacks), in which the underlying microdata is recovered merely by finding a set of microdata that is consistent with the published statistical tabulations. A DRA can be performed by using the tables to create a set of mathematical constraints and then solving the resulting set of simultaneous equations. This article shows how such an attack can be addressed by adding noise to the published tabulations, so that the reconstruction no longer results in the original data
Frustrated order on extrinsic geometries
We study, analytically and theoretically, defects in a nematically-ordered
surface that couple to the extrinsic geometry of a surface. Though the
intrinsic geometry tends to confine topological defects to regions of large
Gaussian curvature, extrinsic couplings tend to orient the nematic in the local
direction of maximum or minimum bending. This additional frustration is
unavoidable and most important on surfaces of negative Gaussian curvature,
where it leads to a complex ground state thermodynamics. We show, in
contradistinction to the well-known effects of intrinsic geometry, that
extrinsic curvature expels disclinations from the region of maximum curvature
above a critical coupling threshold. On catenoids lacking an "inside-outside"
symmetry, defects are expelled altogether.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Uniqueness of infrared asymptotics in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory II
We present a shortened and simplified version of our proof
\cite{Fischer:2006vf} of the uniqueness of the scaling solution for the
infrared asymptotics of Green functions in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. The
simplification relates to a new RG-invariant arrangement of Green functions
applicable to general theories. As before the proof relies on the necessary
consistency between Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) and functional
renormalisation group equations (FRGs). We also demonstrate the existence of a
specific scaling solution for both, DSEs and FRGs, that displays uniform and
soft kinematic singularities.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
Dynamic wetting with two competing adsorbates
We study the dynamic properties of a model for wetting with two competing
adsorbates on a planar substrate. The two species of particles have identical
properties and repel each other. Starting with a flat interface one observes
the formation of homogeneous droplets of the respective type separated by
nonwet regions where the interface remains pinned. The wet phase is
characterized by slow coarsening of competing droplets. Moreover, in 2+1
dimensions an additional line of continuous phase transition emerges in the
bound phase, which separates an unordered phase from an ordered one. The
symmetry under interchange of the particle types is spontaneously broken in
this region and finite systems exhibit two metastable states, each dominated by
one of the species. The critical properties of this transition are analyzed by
numeric simulations.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, final version published in PR
Analysing the relationship between ectomycorrhizal infection and forest decline using marginal models
This statistical survey originates from the problem of discovering which relationship exists between root ectomycorrhizal infection and health status of forest plants. The sampling scheme takes observations from roots that come from sectors around the tree resulting in a hierarchical association structure of the observations. Marginal regression models are used to analyze the mean effect of the ectomycorrhizal state on a response variable proxy for the health degree of the plants
Alloying effects on the optical properties of GeSi nanocrystals from TDDFT and comparison with effective-medium theory
We present the optical spectra of GeSi alloy nanocrystals
calculated with time-dependent density-functional theory in the adiabatic
local-density ap proximation (TDLDA). The spectra change smoothly as a function
of the compositio n . On the Ge side of the composition range, the lowest
excitations at the ab sorption edge are almost pure Kohn-Sham
independent-particle HOMO-LUMO transitio ns, while for higher Si contents
strong mixing of transitions is found. Within T DLDA the first peak is slightly
higher in energy than in earlier independent-par ticle calculations. However,
the absorption onset and in particular its composit ion dependence is similar
to independent-particle results. Moreover, classical depolarization effects are
responsible for a very strong suppression of the abs orption intensity. We show
that they can be taken into account in a simpler way using Maxwell-Garnett
classical effective-medium theory. Emission spectra are in vestigated by
calculating the absorption of excited nanocrystals at their relaxe d geometry.
The structural contribution to the Stokes shift is about 0.5 eV. Th e
decomposition of the emission spectra in terms of independent-particle transit
ions is similar to what is found for absorption. For the emission, very weak
tra nsitions are found in Ge-rich clusters well below the strong absorption
onset.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
