    A case of chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis associated with Crohn's disease

    Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is an auto-inflammatory bone disease of unknown etiology, most commonly affecting the metaphysis of long bones, especially the tibia, femur and clavicle. The clinical spectrum varies from self-limited uni-or multi-focal lesions to chronic recurrent courses. Diagnosis is based on clinical, radiologic and pathological findings, is probably under-diagnosed due to poor recognition of the disease. A dysregulated innate immunity causes immune cell infiltration of the bones with subsequent osteoclast activation leading to sterile bone lesions. The molecular pathophyiology is still incompletely understood but association with other auto-inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), psoriasis, Wegener's disease, arthritis and synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is interesting. CRMO can precede the symptoms of the associated disease by several years. The bone remodeling caused by CRMO can cause permanent disability. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy with CRMO in association with Crohn's disease

    Nucleoplasmic β-actin exists in a dynamic equilibrium between low-mobility polymeric species and rapidly diffusing populations

    β-Actin, once thought to be an exclusively cytoplasmic protein, is now known to have important functions within the nucleus. Nuclear β-actin associates with and functions in chromatin remodeling complexes, ribonucleic acid polymerase complexes, and at least some ribonucleoproteins. Proteins involved in regulating actin polymerization are also found in the interphase nucleus. We define the dynamic properties of nuclear actin molecules using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Our results indicate that actin and actin-containing complexes are reduced in their mobility through the nucleoplasm diffusing at ∼0.5 μm2 s−1. We also observed that ∼20% of the total nuclear actin pool has properties of polymeric actin that turns over rapidly. This pool could be detected in endogenous nuclear actin by using fluorescent polymeric actin binding proteins and was sensitive to drugs that alter actin polymerization. Our results validate previous reports of polymeric forms of nuclear actin observed in fixed specimens and reveal that these polymeric forms are very dynamic

    Irrigated silage corn is the main crop used for P removal in southern Idaho; however, little is known about the actual amounts of P removed under southern Idaho growing conditions. The study surveyed P removal by irrigated silage corn in primarily manured southern Idaho fields and wide-ranging soil test P. Whole plant corn tissue P concentrations ranged from 0.116 to 0.307% total P and averaged 0.208%—lower than Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) estimates used prior to 2007 (0.26%P) but higher than estimates used since 2007 (0.185%).     An alternative food neophobia scale (FNS-A) to quantify responses to new foods

    An alternative Food Neophobia Scale (FNS-A) was developed in three studies to measure food neophobia (reluctance to eat and avoidance of trying new foods). In Study 1, the original food neophobia scale, FNS (Pliner, & Hobden, 1992), was first critically examined leading to modifications in five and omission of two statements. Furthermore, eight positive and eight negative statements were elicited and introduced along with eight original or modified FNS statements to 575 respondents in South Africa, Lesotho, and Botswana. Study 2 (n = 1010) was used to confirm the factorial structure of the scale, and Study 3 (n = 141) was used to test the reliability of FNS-A through test-retest data. The structure of the scale was analyzed using exploratory (Study 1 and 2) and confirmatory (Study 2) factor analysis, eventually leading to four positive and four negative statements regarding new foods, loaded on two factors labelled approach and avoidance. Test-retest reliability at a 2 weeks' time interval as well as convergent and divergent validity measured against other scales was good (Study 3). In all three studies, predictive validity was evaluated against willingness to try or expected liking ratings of unfamiliar or novel food names or food concept descriptions. This evaluation showed satisfactory performance. FNS-A is a promising tool for the quantification of individual responses to unfamiliar or novel foods, but further studies in other populations and contexts are needed to confirm the applicability.Peer reviewe
