Peaks and Troughs in Helioseismology: The Power Spectrum of Solar Oscillations
I present a matched-wave asymptotic analysis of the driving of solar
oscillations by a general localised source. The analysis provides a simple
mathematical description of the asymmetric peaks in the power spectrum in terms
of the relative locations of eigenmodes and troughs in the spectral response.
It is suggested that the difference in measured phase function between the
modes and the troughs in the spectrum will provide a key diagnostic of the
source of the oscillations. I also suggest a form for the asymmetric line
profiles to be used in the fitting of solar power spectra.
Finally I present a comparison between the numerical and asymptotic
descriptions of the oscillations. The numerical results bear out the
qualitative features suggested by the asymptotic analysis but suggest that
numerical calculations of the locations of the troughs will be necessary for a

A case-only approach for assessing gene-sex interaction in human longevity
As one aspect of the complex feature of longevity, gene-sex interaction plays an important role in influencing human life span. With advances in molecular genetics, more studies aimed at assessing gene-sex interaction are expected. New and valid statistical methods are needed. In this paper, we introduce a nontraditional approach, the case-only design, which was originally proposed for assessing gene and disease associations, to detect gene-sex interaction in human longevity. Applications of this method to data collected from centenarian studies show that it can produce consistent results as compared with results obtained from case-control and other approaches. Important features of the application in human longevity studies are highlighted and discussed. Since centenarians constitute a special population representing successful ageing, the easily applicable case-only approach will be an important tool for screening potential major genes that contribute to human longevity. Effects of Large-Scale Convection on p-mode Frequencies
We describe an approach for finding the eigenfrequencies of solar acoustic
modes (p modes) in a convective envelope in the WKB limit. This approximation
restricts us to examining the effects of fluid motions which are large compared
to the mode wavelength, but allows us to treat the three-dimensional mode as a
localized ray. The method of adiabatic switching is then used to investigate
the frequency shifts resulting from simple perturbations to a polytropic model
of the convection zone as well as from two basic models of a convective cell.
We find that although solely depth-dependent perturbations can give frequency
shifts which are first order in the strength of the perturbation, models of
convective cells generate downward frequency shifts which are second order in
the perturbation strength. These results may have implications for resolving
the differences between eigenfrequencies derived from solar models and those

Numerical indications on the semiclassical limit of the flipped vertex
We introduce a technique for testing the semiclassical limit of a quantum
gravity vertex amplitude. The technique is based on the propagation of a
semiclassical wave packet. We apply this technique to the newly introduced
"flipped" vertex in loop quantum gravity, in order to test the intertwiner
dependence of the vertex. Under some drastic simplifications, we find very
preliminary, but surprisingly good numerical evidence for the correct classical

We review some major open issues in the current modelling of low and
intermediate mass, main sequence stars based on seismological studies. The
solar case was discussed in a companion paper, here several issues specific to
other stars than the Sun are illustrated with a few stars observed with CoRoT

Outcome from Spontaneous CP Violation for B Decays
In the aspon model solution of the strong problem, there is a gauged
symmetry, spontaneously broken by the same vacuum expectation value
which breaks , whose massive gauge boson provides an additional mechanism
of weak violation. We calculate the asymmetries in decays for the
aspon model and show that they are typically smaller than those predicted from
the standard model. A linear relation between the asymmetries of different
