On R-duals and the duality principle in Gabor analysis

The concept of R-duals of a frame was introduced by Casazza, Kutyniok and Lammers in 2004, with the motivation to obtain a general version of the duality principle in Gabor analysis. For tight Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz bases the three authors were actually able to show that the duality principle is a special case of general results for R-duals. In this paper we introduce various alternative R-duals, with focus on what we call R-duals of type II and III. We show how they are related and provide characterizations of the R-duals of type II and III. In particular, we prove that for tight frames these classes coincide with the R-duals by Casazza et el., which is desirable in the sense that the motivating case of tight Gabor frames already is well covered by these R-duals. On the other hand, all the introduced types of R-duals generalize the duality principle for larger classes of Gabor frames than just the tight frames and the Riesz bases; in particular, the R-duals of type III cover the duality principle for all Gabor frames

    Stellar Oscillations Network Group

Stellar Oscillations Network Group (SONG) is an initiative aimed at designing and building a network of 1m-class telescopes dedicated to asteroseismology and planet hunting. SONG will have 8 identical telescope nodes each equipped with a high-resolution spectrograph and an iodine cell for obtaining precision radial velocities and a CCD camera for guiding and imaging purposes. The main asteroseismology targets for the network are the brightest (V<6) stars. In order to improve performance and reduce maintenance costs the instrumentation will only have very few modes of operation. In this contribution we describe the motivations for establishing a network, the basic outline of SONG and the expected performance.Comment: Proc. Damping rates and frequency corrections of Kepler LEGACY stars

Linear damping rates and modal frequency corrections of radial oscillation modes in selected LEGACY main-sequence stars are estimated by means of a nonadiabatic stability analysis. The selected stellar sample covers stars observed by Kepler with a large range of surface temperatures and surface gravities. A nonlocal, time-dependent convection model is perturbed to assess stability against pulsation modes. The mixing-length parameter is calibrated to the surface-convection-zone depth of a stellar model obtained from fitting adiabatic frequencies to the LEGACY observations, and two of the nonlocal convection parameters are calibrated to the corresponding LEGACY linewidth measurements. The remaining nonlocal convection parameters in the 1D calculations are calibrated so as to reproduce profiles of turbulent pressure and of the anisotropy of the turbulent velocity field of corresponding 3D hydrodynamical simulations. The atmospheric structure in the 1D stability analysis adopts a temperature-optical-depth relation derived from 3D hydrodynamical simulations. Despite the small number of parameters to adjust, we find good agreement with detailed shapes of both turbulent pressure profiles and anisotropy profiles with depth, and with damping rates as a function of frequency. Furthermore, we find the absolute modal frequency corrections, relative to a standard adiabatic pulsation calculation, to increase with surface temperature and surface gravity.Comment: accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS); 15 pages, 8 figure

What controls the magnetic geometry of M dwarfs?

Context: observations of rapidly rotating M dwarfs show a broad variety of large-scale magnetic fields encompassing dipole-dominated and multipolar geometries. In dynamo models, the relative importance of inertia in the force balance -- quantified by the local Rossby number -- is known to have a strong impact on the magnetic field geometry. Aims: we aim to assess the relevance of the local Rossby number in controlling the large-scale magnetic field geometry of M dwarfs. Methods: we explore the similarities between anelastic dynamo models in spherical shells and observations of active M-dwarfs, focusing on field geometries derived from spectropolarimetric studies. To do so, we construct observation-based quantities aimed to reflect the diagnostic parameters employed in numerical models. Results: the transition between dipole-dominated and multipolar large-scale fields in early to mid M dwarfs is tentatively attributed to a Rossby number threshold. We interpret late M dwarfs magnetism to result from a dynamo bistability occurring at low Rossby number. By analogy with numerical models, we expect different amplitudes of differential rotation on the two dynamo branches.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&

Brauer-Thrall for totally reflexive modules over local rings of higher dimension

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian local ring. Assume that RR has a pair {x,y}\{x,y\} of exact zerodivisors such that dimR/(x,y)2\dim R/(x,y)\ge2 and all totally reflexive R/(x)R/(x)-modules are free. We show that the first and second Brauer--Thrall type theorems hold for the category of totally reflexive RR-modules. More precisely, we prove that, for infinitely many integers nn, there exists an indecomposable totally reflexive RR-module of multiplicity nn. Moreover, if the residue field of RR is infinite, we prove that there exist infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive RR-modules of multiplicity nn.Comment: to appear in Algebras and Representation Theor

Lasing on a narrow transition in a cold thermal strontium ensemble

Highly stable laser sources based on narrow atomic transitions provide a promising platform for direct generation of stable and accurate optical frequencies. Here we investigate a simple system operating in the high-temperature regime of cold atoms. The interaction between a thermal ensemble of 88^{88}Sr at mK temperatures and a medium-finesse cavity produces strong collective coupling and facilitates high atomic coherence which causes lasing on the dipole forbidden 1^1S03_0 \leftrightarrow ^3P1_1 transition. We experimentally and theoretically characterize the lasing threshold and evolution of such a system, and investigate decoherence effects in an unconfined ensemble. We model the system using a Tavis-Cummings model, and characterize velocity-dependent dynamics of the atoms as well as the dependency on the cavity-detuning.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

Properties of oscillation modes in subgiant stars observed by Kepler

Mixed modes seen in evolved stars carry information on their deeper layers that can place stringent constraints on their physics and on their global properties (mass, age, etc...). In this study, we present a method to identify and measure all oscillatory mode characteristics (frequency, height, width). Analyzing four subgiants stars, we present the first measure of the effect of the degree of mixture on the l=1 mixed modes characteristics. We also show that some stars have measurable l=2 mixed modes and discuss the interest of their measure to constrain the deeper layers of stars.Comment: Accepted to Ap
