    Evolution of magnetic states in frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnetic Co(Al1-xCox)2O4 spinels

    Using neutron powder diffraction and Monte-Carlo simulations we show that a spin-liquid regime emerges at $all compositions in the diamond-lattice antiferromagnets Co(Al1-xCox)2O4. This spin-liquid regime induced by frustration due to the second-neighbour exchange coupling J2, is gradually superseded by antiferromagnetic collinear long-range order (k=0) at low temperatures. Upon substitution of Al3+ by Co3+ in the octahedral B-site the temperature range occupied by the spin-liquid regime narrows and TN increases. To explain the experimental observations we considered magnetic anisotropy D or third-neighbour exchange coupling J3 as degeneracy-breaking perturbations. We conclude that Co(Al1-xCox)2O4 is below the theoretical critical point J2/J1=1/8, and that magnetic anisotropy assists in selecting a collinear long-range ordered ground state, which becomes more stable with increasing x due to a higher efficiency of O-Co3+-O as an interaction path compared to O-Al3+-O

    Ultraviolet downconverting phosphor for use with silicon CCD imagers

    The properties and application of a UV downconverting phosphor (coronene) to silicon charge coupled devices are discussed. Measurements of the absorption spectrum have been extended to below 1000 A, and preliminary results indicate the existence of useful response to at least 584 A. The average conversion efficiency of coronene was measured to be ~20% at 2537 A. Imagery at 3650 A using a backside illuminated 800 X 800 CCD coated with coronene is presented

    The temperature dependence of the magnetic order of stripe-ordered La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) is investigated by neutron diffraction. Upon cooling, the widths if the magnetic Bragg peaks are observed to broaden. The degree of broadening is found to be very different for l = odd-integer and l = even-integer magnetic peaks. We argue that the observed behaviour is a result of competition between magnetic and charge order.Comment: 3 figure

    Shape-preserving and unidirectional frequency conversion using four-wave mixing Bragg scattering

    In this work, we investigate the properties of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering in a configuration that employs orthogonally polarized pumps in a birefringent waveguide. This configuration enables a large signal conversion bandwidth, and allows strongly unidirectional frequency conversion as undesired Bragg-scattering processes are suppressed by waveguide birefringence. Moreover, we show that this form of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering preserves the (arbitrary) signal pulse shape, even when driven by pulsed pumps.Comment: 11 pages + refs, 5 figure

    Critical fluctuations and anomalous transport in soft Yukawa-Langevin systems

    Simulation of a Langevin-dynamics model demonstrates emergence of critical fluctuations and anomalous grain transport which have been observed in experiments on "soft" quasi-two-dimensional dusty plasma clusters. It has been suggested that these anomalies derive from particular non-equilibrium physics, but our model does not contain such physics: the grains are confined by an external potential, interact via static Yukawa forces, and are subject to stochastic heating and dissipation from neutrals. One remarkable feature is emergence of leptokurtic probability distributions of grain displacements ξ(τ)\xi(\tau) on time-scales τ<τΔ\tau<\tau_{\Delta}, where τΔ\tau_{\Delta} is the time at which the standard deviation σ(τ)1/2\sigma(\tau)\equiv ^{1/2} approaches the mean inter-grain distance Δ\Delta. Others are development of humps in the distributions on multiples of Δ\Delta, anomalous Hurst exponents, and transitions from leptokurtic towards Gaussian displacement distributions on time scales τ>τΔ\tau>\tau_{\Delta}. The latter is a signature of intermittency, here interpreted as a transition from bursty transport associated with hopping on intermediate time scales to vortical flows on longer time scales.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

    Coupled Magnetic Excitations in Single Crystal PrBa2Cu3O6.2

    The dispersion of the low-energy magnetic excitations of the Pr sublattice in PrBa2Cu3O6.2 is determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal. The dispersion, which shows the effect of interactions with the Cu spin-waves, is well described by a model of the coupled Cu-Pr magnetic system. This enables values for the principal exchange constants to be determined, which suggest that both Pr-Pr and Cu-Pr interactions are important in producing the anomalously high ordering temperature of the Pr sublattice. Measurements of the Cu optic spin wave mode show that the inter-layer Cu-Cu exchange is significantly lower than in YBa2Cu3O6.2.Comment: To be published Phys. Rev. Let

    CMB map derived from the WMAP data through Harmonic Internal Linear Combination

    We are presenting an Internal Linear Combination (ILC) CMB map, in which the foreground is reduced through harmonic variance minimization. We have derived our method by converting a general form of pixel-space approach into spherical harmonic space, maintaining full correspondence. By working in spherical harmonic space, spatial variability of linear weights is incorporated in a self-contained manner and our linear weights are continuous functions of position over the entire sky. The full correspondence to pixel-space approach enables straightforward physical interpretation on our approach. In variance minimization of a linear combination map, the existence of a cross term between residual foregrounds and CMB makes the linear combination of minimum variance differ from that of minimum foreground. We have developed an iterative foreground reduction method, where perturbative correction is made for the cross term. Our CMB map derived from the WMAP data is in better agreement with the WMAP best-fit Λ\LambdaCDM model than the WMAP team's Internal Linear Combination map. We find that our method's capacity to clean foreground is limited by the availability of enough spherical harmonic coefficients of good Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).Comment: The whole sky CMB map, which is derived from the WMAP 5 year data through our method, is available in HEALPix FITS format at http://www.nbi.dk/~jkim/hilc The paper with higher resolution images also available at http://www.nbi.dk/~jkim/hil

    Resonant inductive applicator for neck hyperthermia

    Journal ArticleWe have designed and phantom tested an inductive applicator especially suited for producing hyperthermia in cancerous regions in the neck. The applicator is tuned to resonate near 27 MHz; its inductive nature has the advantage of efficient coupling to the irregular neck anatomy. An inhomogeneous neck phantom consisting of an outer fat layer and bone and air columns was constructed. The heating pattern in the phantom was relatively uniform within the cross-sectional area, indicating promise for clinical applications
