Making visible a teacher’s pedagogical reasoning: an aspect of pedagogical documentation

    Get PDF
Much of a teacher’s practice and professional learning remains unseen despite recent calls to incorporate practice-based and inquiry-based approaches to improve mathematics instruction. Although the idea of pedagogical reasoning and action can provide a way to unpack these unseen aspects of practice, it remains to be seen how a teacher’s actions and thinking can be made visible. In this paper, we present a case of how a teacher’s pedagogical reasoning is made visible through pedagogical documentation, which suggests the possibility of using documentation to unpack these unseen aspects of a teacher’s practices. This study was funded by Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) under the MOE Academy Fund Programme (AFD 06/17 CBH) and administered by National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

    Innovations in Traumatic Hemorrhage

    Get PDF
Traumatic hemorrhagic injuries present a great problem to humanity and a challenge to medicine in the modern world. Current methods of treating these injuries in the field are ineffective and often extremely overkill or injurious. These methods are particularly inadequate when applied to the continuous high pressure bleeding that occurs from arterial wounds. Our project focuses on lowering the barriers to entry to innovation in the field of bleeding treatment by creating a low cost model of the human circulatory system. This model can function as a low-cost testing platform for novel bleeding treatments developed by companies and individuals that do not have the resources to regularly purchase extremely expensive cardiovascular simulators. To this end we designed a tripartite model which included a heart-simulating pump, vessel-simulating vasculature, and blood-mimicking fluid. In order to ensure our device functioned as a testing platform, we performed some preliminary solution candidate tests on it which had the ancillary benefit of identifying one effective but biologically unsafe solution that could be translated into a safe and efficacious future solution. Ultimately we found that our system functioned well as a testing platform for traumatic injury treatments and that standard silicone sealant administered by injection into the vessels had the greatest efficacy in stopping bleeding

Tissue microarray immunohistochemical detection of brachyury is not a prognostic indicator in chordoma.

Brachyury is a marker for notochord-derived tissues and neoplasms, such as chordoma. However, the prognostic relevance of brachyury expression in chordoma is still unknown. The improvement of tissue microarray technology has provided the opportunity to perform analyses of tumor tissues on a large scale in a uniform and consistent manner. This study was designed with the use of tissue microarray to determine the expression of brachyury. Brachyury expression in chordoma tissues from 78 chordoma patients was analyzed by immunohistochemical staining of tissue microarray. The clinicopathologic parameters, including gender, age, location of tumor and metastatic status were evaluated. Fifty-nine of 78 (75.64%) tumors showed nuclear staining for brachyury, and among them, 29 tumors (49.15%) showed 1+ (<30% positive cells) staining, 15 tumors (25.42%) had 2+ (31% to 60% positive cells) staining, and 15 tumors (25.42%) demonstrated 3+ (61% to 100% positive cells) staining. Brachyury nuclear staining was detected more frequently in sacral chordomas than in chordomas of the mobile spine. However, there was no significant relationship between brachyury expression and other clinical variables. By Kaplan-Meier analysis, brachyury expression failed to produce any significant relationship with the overall survival rate. In conclusion, brachyury expression is not a prognostic indicator in chordoma

Foreign direct investment and investment environment in Dongguan Municipality of southern China

Based on 26 case studies, this paper investigates the socio-economic causes of the inflow of FDI and its policy implications in Dongguan. The favourable factors for foreign investors in Dongguan can be categorised under the Dunning's OLI (ownership, locational and internalisation advantages) framework. This paper argues that factors other than policy incentive, such as sub-contractual and pseudo integration, are playing more important roles in attracting the inflow of FDI and maintaining the high level of economic growth in Dongguan. This finding questions the effectiveness of policy incentives, such as tax-breaks, implemented by the Government as a means to attract FDI in Dongguan. The existence of 'Chinese crony capitalism' calls for further improvement in the implementation of laws and regulations in Dongguan and the reduction of bureaucratic red-tape by the central and local governments

Harnessing IoT Data and Knowledge in Smart Manufacturing

    Get PDF
In the modern digitalized era, the use of electronic devices is a necessity in daily life, with most end users requiring high product quality of these devices. During the electronics manufacturing process, environmental control, for monitoring ambient temperature and relative humidity, is one of the critical elements affecting product quality. However, the manufacturing process is complicated and involves numerous sections, such as processing workshops and storage facilities. Each section has its own specific requirements for environmental conditions, which are checked regularly and manually, such that the whole environmental control process becomes time-consuming and inefficient. In addition, the reporting mechanism when conditions are out of specification is done manually at regular intervals, resulting in a certain likelihood of serious quality deviation. There is a substantial need for improving knowledge management under smart manufacturing for full integration of Internet of Things (IoT) data and manufacturing knowledge. In this chapter, an Internet-of-Things Quality Prediction System (IQPS), which is a mission critical system in electronics manufacturing, is proposed in adopting the advanced IoT technologies to develop a real-time environmental monitoring scheme in electronics manufacturing. By deploying IQPS, the total intelligent environmental monitoring is achieved, while product quality is predicted in a systematic manner

Prognostic Factors in Dedifferentiated Chondrosarcoma: A Retrospective Analysis of a Large Series Treated at a Single Institution.

Background:Dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas (DDCSs) are highly malignant tumors with a dismal prognosis and present a significant challenge in clinical management. Methods:In an IRB approved retrospective protocol, we identified 72 patients with DDCS treated at our institution between 1993 and 2017 and reviewed clinicopathological characteristics, treatment modalities, and outcomes to analyze prognostic factors. Results:Femur (44.4%), pelvis (22.2%), and humerus (12.5%) were most commonly involved sites. Twenty-three patients (31.9%) presented with distant metastasis, and 3 (4.2%) of them also had regional lymph node involvement. The median overall survival (OS) was 13.9 months. On multivariate analysis, pathological fracture, larger tumor size, lymph node involvement, metastasis at diagnosis, extraosseous extension, and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma component correlated with worse OS, whereas surgical resection and chemotherapy were associated with improved OS. For progression-free survival (PFS), pathological fracture and metastasis at diagnosis showed increased risk, while chemotherapy was associated with decreased risk. Among patients who received chemotherapy, doxorubicin and cisplatin were significantly associated with improved PFS but not OS. Among patients without metastasis at diagnosis, 17 (34.7%) developed local recurrence. Thirty-one (63.3%) developed distant metastases at a median interval of 18.1 months. On multivariate analysis, R1/R2 resection was related with local recurrence, while macroscopic dedifferentiated component was associated with distant metastasis. Conclusions:The prognosis of DDCS is poor. Complete resection remains a significant prognostic factor for local control. Chemotherapy with doxorubicin and cisplatin seems to have better PFS. More prognostic, multicenter trials are warranted to further explore the effectiveness of chemotherapy in selected DDCS patients

Attitude of Patients towards Anaesthesia: Comparing the Use of a Single Consent for Anaesthesia versus the Combined Surgical and Anaesthetic Consent.

Anaesthesiology is a specialty which is less well known and the public usually have little knowledge regarding anaesthesia and the roles of Anaesthesiologist. Many hospitals now use a single dedicated consent for anaesthesia. This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of a single consent for anaesthesia with the combined surgical and anaesthetic consent. A total of 109 patients, scheduled for elective surgery requiring anaesthesia were interviewed with a standardised questionnaire. Patients were divided into two groups, where one group used a single anaesthetic consent while the other used a combined surgical and anaesthetic consent. A single consent for anaesthesia was found to be more effective than the current combined surgical and anaesthetic consent (p<0.05). Regarding information about anaesthesia, 89.91% respondents agreed that the Anaesthesiologist should tell them all material risks of anaesthesia, no matter how serious it is and 81.65% respondents would like to meet Anaesthesiologist every time prior to the operation. In terms of knowledge, 94.5% patients recognized that Anaesthesiologist is the one who delivers anaesthesia during surgery. However, patients had little knowledge regarding the extended roles of Anaesthesiologist. The present study confirmed that a single consent for anaesthesia was better than the current combined surgical and anaesthetic consent

Exploring The Design of Prompts For Applying GPT-3 based Chatbots: A Mental Wellbeing Case Study on Mechanical Turk

Large-Language Models like GPT-3 have the potential to enable HCI designers and researchers to create more human-like and helpful chatbots for specific applications. But evaluating the feasibility of these chatbots and designing prompts that optimize GPT-3 for a specific task is challenging. We present a case study in tackling these questions, applying GPT-3 to a brief 5-minute chatbot that anyone can talk to better manage their mood. We report a randomized factorial experiment with 945 participants on Mechanical Turk that tests three dimensions of prompt design to initialize the chatbot (identity, intent, and behaviour), and present both quantitative and qualitative analyses of conversations and user perceptions of the chatbot. We hope other HCI designers and researchers can build on this case study, for other applications of GPT-3 based chatbots to specific tasks, and build on and extend the methods we use for prompt design, and evaluation of the prompt design

The isopropylation of naphthalene with propene over H-mordenite: The catalysis at the internal and external acid sites

    Get PDF
The isopropylation of naphthalene (NP) with propene over H-Mordenite (MOR) was studied under a wide range of reaction parameters: temperature, propene pressure, period, and NP/MOR ratio. Selective formation of 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene (2,6-DIPN) was observed at reaction conditions, such as at low reaction temperature, under high propene pressure, and/or with high NP/MOR ratio. However, the decrease in the selectivities for 2,6-DIPN was observed at reaction conditions such as at high temperature, under low propene pressure, and/or with low NP/MOR ratio. The selectivities for 2,6-DIPN in the encapsulated products were remained high and constant under all reaction conditions. These results indicate that the selective formation of 2,6-DIPN occurs through the least bulky transition state due to the exclusion of the bulky isomers by the MOR channels. The decrease in the selectivities for 2,6-DIPN are due to the isomerization of 2,6-DIPN to 2,7-DIPN at the external acid sites, directing towards thermodynamic equilibrium of DIPN isomers
