Averaging approximation to singularly perturbed nonlinear stochastic wave equations

An averaging method is applied to derive effective approximation to the following singularly perturbed nonlinear stochastic damped wave equation \nu u_{tt}+u_t=\D u+f(u)+\nu^\alpha\dot{W} on an open bounded domain D⊂RnD\subset\R^n\,, 1≤n≤31\leq n\leq 3\,. Here ν>0\nu>0 is a small parameter characterising the singular perturbation, and να\nu^\alpha\,, 0≤α≤1/20\leq \alpha\leq 1/2\,, parametrises the strength of the noise. Some scaling transformations and the martingale representation theorem yield the following effective approximation for small ν\nu, u_t=\D u+f(u)+\nu^\alpha\dot{W} to an error of \ord{\nu^\alpha}\,.Comment: 16 pages. Circadian rhythms in insecticide susceptibility, metabolic enzyme activity, and gene expression in Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

Many insect species display daily variation of sensitivity to insecticides when they are exposed to the same concentration at different times during the day. To date, this has not been investigated in bed bugs. To address this, we explored circadian rhythms in insecticide susceptibility, xenobiotic metabolizing (XM) gene expressions, and metabolic detoxification in the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius. An insecticide susceptible Monheim strain of C. lectularius was most tolerant of deltamethrin during the late photophase at ZT9 (i.e. nine hours after light is present in the light-dark cycle (LD) cycle) and similarly repeated at CT9 (i.e. nine hours into the subjective day in constant darkness (DD)) suggesting endogenous circadian involvement in susceptibility to deltamethrin. No diel rhythm was observed against imidacloprid insecticide despite significant daily susceptibility in both LD and DD conditions. Rhythmic expressions of metabolic detoxification genes, GSTs1 and CYP397A1 displayed similar expression patterns with total GST and P450 enzyme activities in LD and DD conditions, respectively. The oscillation of mRNA levels of GSTs1 and CYP397A1 was found consistent with peak phases of deltamethrin susceptibility in C. lectularius. This study demonstrates that circadian patterns of metabolic detoxification gene expression occur within C. lectularius. As a consequence, insecticide efficacy can vary dramatically throughout a 24 hour period

Low frequency creep in CoNiFe films

The results of an investigation of domain wall motion excited by slow rise-time, bipolar, hard-axis pulses in vacuum deposited CoNiFe films 1500A to 2000A thick are presented. The results are consistent with those of comparable NiFe films in spite of large differences in film properties. The present low frequency creep data together with previously published results in this and other laboratories can be accounted for by a model which requires that the wall structure change usually associated with low frequency creep be predominately a gyromagnetic process. The correctness of this model is reinforced by the observation that the wall coercive force, the planar wall mobility, and the occurrence of an abrupt wall structure change are the only properties closely correlated to the creep displacement characteristics of a planar wall in low dispersion films

Carbon and Hydrogen Contents of Short-Rotation Biomass of Five Hardwood Species

Carbon, hydrogen, and ash contents were determined on three-year-old, short-rotation trees of autumn olive, black alder, black locust, eastern cottonwood, and sycamore. These plantations were established on marginal agricultural land that was not suitable for food production in Midwestern United States. Test results indicated that elemental analysis varied among species, planting site, and spacing. Black locust had the highest hydrogen content, black alder had the highest carbon content, and eastern cottonwood possessed the greatest ash content. The hydrogen content was higher at bottomland than upland, while the carbon content and ash content were both higher on upland as opposed to bottomland sites. The hydrogen content was higher at narrow spacing, while carbon content was higher at wide spacing. Conversely, hydrogen was not significantly affected by the stem portion, while both carbon and ash contents of the wood, bark, and branches mixture portion were higher than those of the wood portion

We show that any noncompact Riemann surface admits a complete Ricci flow g(t), t\in[0,\infty), which has unbounded curvature for all t\in[0,\infty).Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure; updated reference

Nanometric size effect on Ge diffusion in polycrystalline Si

    Get PDF
The nanosize effect on Ge diffusion (850 \u3c = T \u3c = 1000 degrees C) in polycrystalline Si layers is investigated. The Ge diffusion coefficients in microcrystalline and nanocrystalline Si layers made of 30 mu m and 40 nm wide grains, respectively, are measured and compared. In the microcrystalline Si layer, the Ge diffusion coefficient in micrograin boundaries is measured using a conventional analytical solution of Fick\u27s equations corresponding to the Fisher model. In the nanocrystalline Si layer, the Ge diffusion coefficients in nanograins and in nanograin boundaries are measured via a method based on two-dimensional simulations using the Fisher model geometry. The diffusivities in nanograins and nanograin boundaries are one order of magnitude higher than in micrograins and micrograin boundaries, respectively. However, the nanosize effect appears to be different in grains and grain boundaries; despite that the activation energy for diffusion in 40 nm wide grains is at least 1 eV lower than in Si bulk. The activation energy in nanograin boundaries is about the same as in micrograin boundaries
