Averaging approximation to singularly perturbed nonlinear stochastic wave equations
An averaging method is applied to derive effective approximation to the
following singularly perturbed nonlinear stochastic damped wave equation \nu
u_{tt}+u_t=\D u+f(u)+\nu^\alpha\dot{W} on an open bounded domain
\,, \,. Here is a small parameter
characterising the singular perturbation, and \,, \,, parametrises the strength of the noise. Some scaling transformations
and the martingale representation theorem yield the following effective
approximation for small , u_t=\D u+f(u)+\nu^\alpha\dot{W} to an error of
\ord{\nu^\alpha}\,.Comment: 16 pages. Submitte
Transition from multiple to single microcontact conduction during hot switching of microelectromechanical switches with ball-shaped dimples
Previous studies of electron transport within direct contact microelectromechanical switches have found that conduction occurs via nanoscale contact asperities. It has been claimed that reduced contact resistance can be achieved by using multiple contact switches; however, the ability of these switches to enhance power handling or lifetime remains a question. To study the contact mechanism, single-input-multiple-output switches with ball-shaped dimples were specially designed and tested. At all voltage levels of hot-switching operation, uneven current sharing among the outputs was observed. Furthermore, at softening voltage, an irreversible multiple to single conduction transition occurs and is found to alternate among different outputs.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87795/2/133501_1.pd

Positive Vibrational Entropy of Chemical Ordering in FeV
Inelastic neutron scattering and nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering were used to measure phonon spectra of FeV as a B2 ordered compound and as a bcc solid solution. The two data sets were combined to give an accurate phonon density of states, and the phonon partial densities of states for V and Fe atoms. Contrary to the behavior of ordering alloys studied to date, the phonons in the B2 ordered phase are softer than in the solid solution. Ordering increases the vibrational entropy by +0.22±0.03k_B/atom, which stabilizes the ordered phase to higher temperatures. First-principles calculations show that the number of electronic states at the Fermi level increases upon ordering, enhancing the screening between ions, and reducing the interatomic force constants. The effect of screening is larger at the V atomic sites than at the Fe atomic sites
Analytic Controllability of Time-Dependent Quantum Control Systems
The question of controllability is investigated for a quantum control system
in which the Hamiltonian operator components carry explicit time dependence
which is not under the control of an external agent. We consider the general
situation in which the state moves in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, a
drift term is present, and the operators driving the state evolution may be
unbounded. However, considerations are restricted by the assumption that there
exists an analytic domain, dense in the state space, on which solutions of the
controlled Schrodinger equation may be expressed globally in exponential form.
The issue of controllability then naturally focuses on the ability to steer the
quantum state on a finite-dimensional submanifold of the unit sphere in Hilbert
space -- and thus on analytic controllability. A relatively straightforward
strategy allows the extension of Lie-algebraic conditions for strong analytic
controllability derived earlier for the simpler, time-independent system in
which the drift Hamiltonian and the interaction Hamiltonia have no intrinsic
time dependence. Enlarging the state space by one dimension corresponding to
the time variable, we construct an augmented control system that can be treated
as time-independent. Methods developed by Kunita can then be implemented to
establish controllability conditions for the one-dimension-reduced system
defined by the original time-dependent Schrodinger control problem. The
applicability of the resulting theorem is illustrated with selected examples.Comment: 13 page
Multiplpe Choice Minority Game With Different Publicly Known Histories
In the standard Minority Game, players use historical minority choices as the
sole public information to pick one out of the two alternatives. However,
publishing historical minority choices is not the only way to present global
system information to players when more than two alternatives are available.
Thus, it is instructive to study the dynamics and cooperative behaviors of this
extended game as a function of the global information provided. We numerically
find that although the system dynamics depends on the kind of public
information given to the players, the degree of cooperation follows the same
trend as that of the standard Minority Game. We also explain most of our
findings by the crowd-anticrowd theory.Comment: Extensively revised, to appear in New J Phys, 7 pages with 4 figure
Dynamics of iron atoms across the pressure-induced Invar transition in Pd_3Fe
The ^(57)Fe phonon partial density of states (PDOS) in L1_2-ordered Pd_3Fe was studied at high pressures by nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The NRIXS spectra showed that the stiffening of the ^(57)Fe PDOS with decreasing volume was slower from 12 to 24 GPa owing to the pressure-induced Invar transition in Pd_3Fe, with a change from a high-moment ferromagnetic (FM) state to a low-moment (LM) state observed by nuclear forward scattering. Force constants obtained from fitting to a Born–von Kármán model showed a relative softening of the first-nearest-neighbor (1NN) Fe-Pd longitudinal force constants at the magnetic transition. For the FM low-pressure state, the DFT calculations gave a PDOS and 1NN longitudinal force constants in good agreement with experiment, but discrepancies for the high-pressure LM state suggest the presence of short-range magnetic order
Theory of terahertz electric oscillations by supercooled superconductors
We predict that below T_c a regime of negative differential conductivity
(NDC) can be reached. The superconductor should be supercooled to T<T_c in the
normal phase under DC voltage. In such a nonequilibrium situation the NDC of
the superconductor is created by the excess conductivity of the fluctuation
Cooper pairs. We propose NDC of supercooled superconductors to be used as an
active medium for generation of electric oscillations. Such generators can be
used in the superconducting electronics as a new type THz source of radiation.
Oscillations can be modulated by the change of the bias voltage, electrostatic
doping by a gate electrode when the superconductor is the channel of a field
effect transistor, or by light. When small amplitude oscillations are
stabilized near the critical temperature T_c the generator can be used as a
bolometer. The essential for the applications NDC is predicted by the solution
of the Boltzmann kinetic equation for the metastable in the normal phase Cooper
pairs. Boltzmann equation for fluctuation Cooper pairs is a result of
state-of-the-art application of the microscopic theory of superconductivity.
Our theoretical conclusions are based on some approximations like time
dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, but nevertheless can reliably predict
appearance of NDC. The maximal frequency at which superconductors can operate
as generators is determined by the critical temperature \hbar omega_max ~ k_B
T_c. For high-T_c superconductors this maximal frequency falls well inside the
terahertz range. Technical conditions to avoid nucleation of the
superconducting phase are briefly discussed. We suggest that nanostructured
high-T_c superconductors patterned in a single chip can give the best technical
performance of the proposed oscillator.Comment: 7 page
Quasi--local angular momentum of non--symmetric isolated and dynamical horizons from the conformal decomposition of the metric
A new definition of quasi--local angular momentum of non--axisymmetric
marginally outer trapped surfaces is proposed. It is based on conformal
decomposition of the two--dimensional metric and the action of the group of
conformal symmetries. The definition is completely general and agrees with the
standard one in axi--symmetric surfaces.Comment: Final version to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravity. One
