    Effect of herbicides on the carbohydrate and nitrogen contents of nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus L.)

    The effect of four herbicides on the starch and nitrogen contents of the tubers, dry matter production, carbohydrate, amide, amino, ammonium and nitrate nitrogen contents of the foliage of nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus L.) under pot culture conditions was studied. The starch content of the tubers of nutgrass depleted maximum by the Embutox-plus and Tok E-25 when applied as foliar spray and soil placement, respectively. The foliar application of Embutox-plus and Tok E-25 appeared to have maximum reduction in the carbohydrate and different nitrogen contents in the foliage of nutgrass as compared with other herbicides used. Severe reduction in the amide and amino nitrogen was observed as against ammonium or nitrate nitrogen content on the application of herbicides

    Studies on the efficacy of some herbicides on the control of weeds in Japanese mint

    The present investigation was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nine herbicides in the control of weeds associated with Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis) crop. The chemical method of weed control used in this investigation was found to be very effective in preventing weed growth in the mint crop. As a result of herbicidal treatment, the weeds underwent a marked reduction in their dry matter accumulation, coupled with a significant increase in the yield of mint herb and mint oil. Of the different herbicides embutox plus applied as post-emergence treatment and tok E-25 applied in the pre-emergence stage were found to be effective weed-killers, contributing a significant increase in mint foliage and oil yields. Telvar was similarly effective on application at the post-emergence stage. Other herbicides,viz., 2, 4-D and bladex-O also yielded useful responses

    Global outcome after traumatic brain injury in a prospective cohort

    Objectives Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI) is one of the most common neurosurgical emergencies but the long-term outcome remains unclear. This study investigated the global outcome and return to work after TBI and tried to identify any relationships that exist with injury and demographic features. Patients & methods 1322 consecutive TBI admissions over 4 years, assessed at a specialist neurorehabilitation clinic at 10weeks and 1 yr. The outcomes were Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale(GOSE), return to work, Rivermead Head Injury Follow-up Questionnaire, Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score. Results 1 year follow-up was achieved in 1207(91.3%). Mean age was 46.9(SD17.3) and 49.2% had mild TBI. The proportion attaining Good Recovery increased from 25.1% to 42.9% by 1 year. However 11.4% deteriorated in GOSE. Only 28.1% of individuals returned to the same pre-morbid level of work by 10 weeks, improving to 45.9% at 1 year. Over a quarter (25.6%) at 1 year were unable to make any return to work or study. Several demographic and injury variables were associated with these outcomes including TBI severity, social class, past psychiatric history and alcohol intoxication. These may allow targeting of vulnerable individuals. Conclusions In a largely representative TBI population including predominantly mild injury, there is still considerable functional disability at 1 year and many individuals are unable to make any return to pre-morbid vocation

    Smartphone and medical related App use among medical students and junior doctors in the United Kingdom (UK): a regional survey

    Background: Smartphone usage has spread to many settings including that of healthcare with numerous potential and realised benefits. The ability to download custom-built software applications (apps) has created a new wealth of clinical resources available to healthcare staff, providing evidence-based decisional tools to reduce medical errors. Previous literature has examined how smartphones can be utilised by both medical student and doctor populations, to enhance educational and workplace activities, with the potential to improve overall patient care. However, this literature has not examined smartphone acceptance and patterns of medical app usage within the student and junior doctor populations. Methods: An online survey of medical student and foundation level junior doctor cohorts was undertaken within one United Kingdom healthcare region. Participants were asked whether they owned a Smartphone and if they used apps on their Smartphones to support their education and practice activities. Frequency of use and type of app used was also investigated. Open response questions explored participants’ views on apps that were desired or recommended and the characteristics of apps that were useful. Results: 257 medical students and 131 junior doctors responded, equating to a response rate of 15.0% and 21.8% respectively. 79.0% (n=203/257) of medical students and 74.8% (n=98/131) of junior doctors owned a smartphone, with 56.6% (n=115/203) of students and 68.4% (n=67/98) of doctors owning an iPhone. The majority of students and doctors owned 1–5 medical related applications, with very few owning more than 10, and iPhone owners significantly more likely to own apps (Chi sq, p<0.001). Both populations showed similar trends of app usage of several times a day. Over 24hours apps were used for between 1–30 minutes for students and 1–20 minutes for doctors, students used disease diagnosis/management and drug reference apps, with doctors favouring clinical score/calculator apps. Conclusions: This study found a high level of smartphone ownership and usage among medical students and junior doctors. Both groups endorse the development of more apps to support their education and clinical practice

    Mutant Prourokinase with Adjunctive C1-Inhibitor Is an Effective and Safer Alternative to tPA in Rat Stroke

    A single-site mutant (M5) of native urokinase plasminogen activator (prouPA) induces effective thrombolysis in dogs with venous or arterial thrombosis with a reduction in bleeding complications compared to tPA. This effect, related to inhibition of two-chain M5 (tcM5) by plasma C1-inhibitor (C1I), thereby preventing non-specific plasmin generation, was augmented by the addition of exogenous C1I to plasma in vitro. In the present study, tPA, M5 or placebo +/− C1I were administered in two rat stroke models. In Part-I, permanent MCA occlusion was used to evaluate intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) by the thrombolytic regimens. In Part II, thromboembolic occlusion was used with thrombolysis administered 2 h later. Infarct and edema volumes, and ICH were determined at 24 h, and neuroscore pre (2 h) and post (24 h) treatment. In Part I, fatal ICH occurred in 57% of tPA and 75% of M5 rats. Adjunctive C1I reduced this to 25% and 17% respectively. Similarly, semiquantitation of ICH by neuropathological examination showed significantly less ICH in rats given adjunctive C1I compared with tPA or M5 alone. In Part-II, tPA, M5, and M5+C1I induced comparable ischemic volume reductions (>55%) compared with the saline or C1I controls, indicating the three treatments had a similar fibrinolytic effect. ICH was seen in 40% of tPA and 50% of M5 rats, with 1 death in the latter. Only 17% of the M5+C1I rats showed ICH, and the bleeding score in this group was significantly less than that in either the tPA or M5 group. The M5+C1I group had the best Benefit Index, calculated by dividing percent brain salvaged by the ICH visual score in each group. In conclusion, adjunctive C1I inhibited bleeding by M5, induced significant neuroscore improvement and had the best Benefit Index. The C1I did not compromise fibrinolysis by M5 in contrast with tPA, consistent with previous in vitro findings

    Rifampin pharmacokinetics in children, with and without human immunodeficiency virus infection, hospitalized for the management of severe forms of tuberculosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rifampin is a key drug in antituberculosis chemotherapy because it rapidly kills the majority of bacilli in tuberculosis lesions, prevents relapse and thus enables 6-month short-course chemotherapy. Little is known about the pharmacokinetics of rifampin in children. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of rifampin in children with tuberculosis, both human immunodeficiency virus type-1-infected and human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fifty-four children, 21 human immunodeficiency virus-infected and 33 human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected, mean ages 3.73 and 4.05 years (<it>P </it>= 0.68), respectively, admitted to a tuberculosis hospital in Cape Town, South Africa with severe forms of tuberculosis were studied approximately 1 month and 4 months after commencing antituberculosis treatment. Blood specimens for analysis were drawn in the morning, 45 minutes, 1.5, 3.0, 4.0 and 6.0 hours after dosing. Rifampin concentrations were determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. For two sample comparisons of means, the Welch version of the t-test was used; associations between variables were examined by Pearson correlation and by multiple linear regression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The children received a mean rifampin dosage of 9.61 mg/kg (6.47 to 15.58) body weight at 1 month and 9.63 mg/kg (4.63 to 17.8) at 4 months after commencing treatment administered as part of a fixed-dose formulation designed for paediatric use. The mean rifampin area under the curve 0 to 6 hours after dosing was 14.9 and 18.1 μg/hour/ml (<it>P </it>= 0.25) 1 month after starting treatment in human immunodeficiency virus-infected and human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected children, respectively, and 16.52 and 17.94 μg/hour/ml (<it>P </it>= 0.59) after 4 months of treatment. The mean calculated 2-hour rifampin concentrations in these human immunodeficiency virus-infected and human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected children were 3.9 and 4.8 μg/ml (<it>P </it>= 0.20) at 1 month after the start of treatment and 4.0 and 4.6 μg/ml (<it>P </it>= 0.33) after 4 months of treatment. These values are considerably less than the suggested lower limit for 2-hour rifampin concentrations in adults of 8.0 μg/ml and even 4 μg/ml</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Both human immunodeficiency virus-infected and human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected children with tuberculosis have very low rifampin serum concentrations after receiving standard rifampin dosages similar to those used in adults. Pharmacokinetic studies of higher dosages of rifampin are urgently needed in children to assist in placing the dosage of rifampin used in childhood on a more scientific foundation.</p
