Broadband rotor noise analyses
The various mechanisms which generate broadband noise on a range of rotors studied include load fluctuations due to inflow turbulence, due to turbulent boundary layers passing the blades' trailing edges, and due to tip vortex formation. Existing analyses are used and extensions to them are developed to make more accurate predictions of rotor noise spectra and to determine which mechanisms are important in which circumstances. Calculations based on the various prediction methods in existing experiments were compared. The present analyses are adequate to predict the spectra from a wide variety of experiments on fans, full scale and model scale helicopter rotors, wind turbines, and propellers to within about 5 to 10 dB. Better knowledge of the inflow turbulence improves the accuracy of the predictions. Results indicate that inflow turbulence noise depends strongly on ambient conditions and dominates at low frequencies. Trailing edge noise and tip vortex noise are important at higher frequencies if inflow turbulence is weak. Boundary layer trailing edge noise, important, for large sized rotors, increases slowly with angle of attack but not as rapidly as tip vortex noise
Light-Cone Distribution Amplitudes of Light Tensor Mesons in QCD
We present a study for two-quark light-cone distribution amplitudes for the
light tensor meson states with quantum number . Because
of the G-parity, the chiral-even two-quark light-cone distribution amplitudes
of this tensor meson are antisymmetric under the interchange of momentum
fractions of the quark and antiquark in the SU(3) limit, while the chiral-odd
ones are symmetric. The asymptotic leading-twist LCDAs with the strange quark
mass correction are shown. We estimate the relevant parameters, the decay
constants and , and first Gegenbauer moment , by
using the QCD sum rule method. These parameters play a central role in the
investigation of meson decaying into the tensor mesons.Comment: 18 pages, 3 Figure

Phase transition of a Bose gas in a harmonic potential
We consider a dilute Bose gas confined by a harmonic potential. We define an
appropriate thermodynamic limit and analyze the properties of the phases and
phase transition in this limit. Critical properties in the presence of the
potential are found to be different from, though simply related, to those in
the usual translationally invariant case. We argue that the properties of
magnetically trapped rubidium\cite{Wieman} and sodium\cite{ketterle} gases (in
which Bose-Einstein condensation has been recently observed) are well
approximated by our thermodynamic limit except in a narrow window of
temperature around the critical temperature. We also consider the effect of the
confining potential on the non-equilibrium dynamics following a rapid quench to
the ordered side and give a scaling description of the late time universal
dynamics.Comment: 10 page
Correlation of high energy muons with primary composition in extensive air shower
An experimental investigation of high energy muons above 200 GeV in extensive air showers has been made for studying high energy interaction and primary composition of cosmic rays of energies in the range 10 to the 14th power approx. 10 to the 15th power eV. The muon energies are estimated from the burst sizes initiated by the muons in the rock, which are measured by four layers of proportional counters, each of area 5 x 2.6 sq m, placed at 30 m.w.e. deep, Funasaka tunnel vertically below the air shower array. These results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations based on the scaling model and the fireball model for two primary compositions, all proton and mixed
Surface roughness during depositional growth and sublimation of ice crystals
Full version of an earlier discussion paper (Chou et al. 2018)Ice surface properties can modify the scattering properties of atmospheric ice crystals and therefore affect the radiative properties of mixed-phase and cirrus clouds. The Ice Roughness Investigation System (IRIS) is a new laboratory setup designed to investigate the conditions under which roughness develops on single ice crystals, based on their size, morphology and growth conditions (relative humidity and temperature). Ice roughness is quantified through the analysis of speckle in 2-D light-scattering patterns. Characterization of the setup shows that a supersaturation of 20 % with respect to ice and a temperature at the sample position as low as-40 °C could be achieved within IRIS. Investigations of the influence of humidity show that higher supersaturations with respect to ice lead to enhanced roughness and irregularities of ice crystal surfaces. Moreover, relative humidity oscillations lead to gradual ratcheting-up of roughness and irregularities, as the crystals undergo repeated growth-sublimation cycles. This memory effect also appears to result in reduced growth rates in later cycles. Thus, growth history, as well as supersaturation and temperature, influences ice crystal growth and properties, and future atmospheric models may benefit from its inclusion in the cloud evolution process and allow more accurate representation of not just roughness but crystal size too, and possibly also electrification properties.Peer reviewe
Deep shower interpretation of the cosmic ray events observed in excess of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin energy
We consider the possibility that the ultra-high-energy cosmic ray flux has a
small component of exotic particles which create showers much deeper in the
atmosphere than ordinary hadronic primaries. It is shown that applying the
conventional AGASA/HiRes/Auger data analysis procedures to such exotic events
results in large systematic biases in the energy spectrum measurement. SubGZK
exotic showers may be mis-reconstructed with much higher energies and mimick
superGZK events. Alternatively, superGZK exotic showers may elude detection by
conventional fluorescence analysis techniques.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Directed flow as effect of transient matter rotation in hadron and nucleus collisions
We discuss directed flow introduced for description of nucleus collisions and
consider its possible behavior in hadronic and nuclei reactions due to rotation
